To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CoLwnLL H. ALEX- ANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaumont, in the county of J efferson and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in J ournal-Box Oil-Cups, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to journal lubricators and more particularly to the class of journal box oil cups.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lubricator of this character in which lubricant will be supplied to the journal within a journal box without requiring the use of waste or other packing substances therein.
Anotherfobject of the invention is the provision of a lubricator of this character in which a predetermined amount of oil will be uniformly fed to the journal within the journal box so as to obviate the congealing of oil contained within the journal box yet enabling the said oil to be freely fed about a greater portion of the journal in the journal box.
A still further object of the invention isthe provision of an oil cup for journal boxes in which the spray head for delivering the oil to the journal may be readily and easily cleansed so as to prevent the clogging thereof and that will supply a uniform quantity of oil to the journal within the journal box.
To the above purposes, and such others as may appear from the following description, the invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a car journal box with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, the journal box being partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is anenlarged vertical sectional view through the spray head or sector. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the sector.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 5 designates the journal or car axle and 6 the journal box therefor, the said. box being provided with the usual hinged lid 7 so that access may be had to the interior of the box for the cleaning .of the journal end of the box as occasion may require. This journal or axle 5 is mounted in the box for rotation in the usual wellknown manner.
' Mounted upon the box is the lubricator or oil cup comprising a font or reservoir 8 from the bottom of which leads an oil supply pipe or tube 9, the latter being connected with a valvevcasing 10 in which is arranged the ordinary out off valve 11 to control or regulate the supply of oil passing through the pipe or tube 9 from the reservoir into the journal box in a manner as will behereinafter more fully described. Arranged within the journal box 6 is a spray head or hollow sector 12, the ends of which are closed by means of detachable plugs 13 threaded therein. The spray head or sector 12 is adapted to encircle the journal or axle 5 for substantially one-half of its cross sectional diameter and is provided with discharge apertures or orifices 14 atits inner periphery for delivering oil from the said spray head onto the journal or axle. Formed medially on the head or sector 12 is an externally threaded boss 15, the latter being in threaded engagement with one end of a short pipe or tube 16 the same being passed upwardly through the top of the journal box 6 and at its opposite end is threaded'in the valve casing 10 whereby oil passing through the tube or pipe 9 from the reservoir will be delivered into the spray head or sector 12 whence it will be discharged onto the journal or axle 5 within. the journal box.
It will be noted that the sprayhead or sector 12 will discharge oil from'the reservoir 8 onto the journal in a uniform manner and that there will be no possibility of the congealing of the oil within the journal box. Also this spray head or sector 12 ohviates the necessity of the employment of waste or packing within the journal box as is ordinarily used for lubricating the journal. The supply of oil from the reservoir to the spray head or sector 12 will be controlled and regulated by the cut off valve 11. Thus, it will be seen ,that the flow of oil into the journal box may be increased or decreased at'will.
