E. H. B. LINDHORST. FLAG HOLDER FOR AUTOMOBILES.

2O INVENTO/S Edward H. E .Lindhor-sr ATTORNEYS which many nnwannn. B. Lmnno'n'sr, or BUTTE, MONTANA.
FLAG-HOLDER FOR AUTOMGBILES.
Specification of Letters Iatent. Patented Sept. 24, 1912.
Application men ma as, 1912. Serial No. 699,182.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. B. LIND- nons'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Butte, in the county of Silverbow and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Flag-Holder for Automobiles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to rovide a device especially adapted to mu guards of automoblles, and so constructed as to be ailixed to mud ards whether they be provided with a e ending flange or not, and so formed as to proper arrangement for effective display.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description hereinafter to be given.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the flag holder embodying my invention, parts being broken out, andshowing fragments of flagstafis; Fig. 2 is an end view; and Fig. 3 isa perspective view showing the device afiixed to the mud-guard of an automobile.
The device includes a base of novel form having a plurality of sockets for receiving flagstafis, and a clamp of special form assoclated with said base in a particular manner. The base 10 is of arched form and on oneend'thereof is a foot 11 and on the opposite end a foot 12, said feet being adapted to rest on the upper surface of a mud-guard,
as 13, with the arched base 10 ranging transversely of the mudguard, as shown in Fig. 3. Desirably the under sides of both feet are faced with cloth 14, to prevent marring the surface of the mudguard. The foot 12 is of a form to co-act with the vertical arm 15 0f a clamp, said clamp including beside the arm 15, a bottom plate 16 which carries near its free end a wing-bolt 17, which bears against the under side of the mudguard and causes the feet 11, 12, to be drawn firml down against the top surface of the guar The bottom plate 16 of the clamp has a depression at 18, adjacent to the vertical arm 15, whereby the free end 19 of the base plate is' offset. The'depression at 18, accommodates the clamp to the pendent flange 20 with mudguards are provided. The foot 12 adjacent to the arm 15 is proold a plurality of flags in selves to an vided with a bolt 21, which passes through a vertical slot 22 in'the said clamp arm, so that by adjusting the wing nut 23 on the outer end of the bolt 21, the base 10 of the flag support may be raised and lowered on the arm 15, to accommodate the device to the particular mudguard. Advantageously the foot 12 is shaped and proportioned to correspond with the depressed portion of the bottom plate 16 of the clamp, so that the offset portion of'the bottom plate may be accommodated between the feet 11, 12, while thefoot 12 is received within the depressed rtion, and thus the device ma .be brought into compact form when not in use. The outer foot 11 has the broader base and comprises two diverging members 115 to give a firm contact with the surface of the mudguard. The broad base thus provided is desirable, because the clamping action at the under side of the mudguard is not at a point directly beneath the said foot 11. The clamping screw 17, it will be seen, is about midway between the feet 11 and 12.
The base 10 at its top surface has a series therefore the flagstafis 26 will diverge upward and the row of flags 27 will be spread apart in an artistic manner. In addition to the sockets 25, the base 10 is provided with holes as at 28, for receiving smaller flagsta'fls 29, there bein a series of holes 28 at each side of the soc ets 25.
In applying the device to a mudguard,
guard is efiected by means of the bindin screw 17. The base 10 is adapted to roc with the bolt 21 as a center, in order to permit the feet 11, 12 to accommodate themunevenness or distortion of the mudguard fore the bolt. 21 is tightened up and the clamping of the device 1s comp eted. Y
While the device is useful in situation other than on mudguards, it is specifically intended for the latter.
Having thus my invention, I
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A flag-sup ort,' eomprismg'an arched base having a epending foot at each end,
said base being formed with flag'sockets fol:
lowing the arched line of the base and adapted to receive flagstafls; and raj-clamp;
rock on said bolt and be secure in a justed position at different points on the clamparm, the bottom plate of the olamp'having a depression adjacent to the vertical arm and having its outer free end-ofiset, said free end carrying a clamp screw located about miclwa between the depending feet of the base 0' the flag support.
2. A flag support, comprising a base having feet at the under side and series of flag sockets at the u per side, and a clamp havin a vertical arm formed with a slot, the
ad acent footof the base havingabolt pro- .vided with; a nut, the bolt working in the --said slot, said clamp having a bottom plate provided with a screw located below the .feet of the'base-and in line with a point about midway between said feet.
In testimony whereof I have signed my nameto this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD H. B. LINDHORST.
