I IMPROVD WASHING-MACHINE.

Be it known. that I, DAYID VoGT, of Trenton, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have iu'- vented a new and useful Improvement in rushing- MaChneS; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being apart of this specincation.

The nature of this'nveution relates to an improvement in washing-machines, and consists in the pecuhar construction and arrangement, on a frame, of a tub, in which is secured a longitudinal rub-board, and in peculiar construction and arrangement of a reciprocating and oscillating rubber, operated by a treadle, the fabric to be cleansed being subjected to a rolliu'g pressure between the rub-board and rubber, as when being washed by hand, the laundress having both hands free to manipulate the fabrics.

In the drawingi A represents a frame, on which is secured a wash- Itub, B. The front standards of the frame arev carried up above the, table on which the tub rests.

In the lower part of these standards a cranked shaft, C, is journaled, to which motion is communicated through a treadle,-D, whose fulcrum is a rockshaft, E, journaled in the side rails A of the frame, the rear ends of theserailste'rminating in handles d.

l is a {Iy-wheel on the shaft (I. It also serves to convert the device into abarrow formoving the same about, the handlesd serving as barrow'handles.

G is a pulley on the shaft C, from which motion is communicated to a cranked shaft, H, through a belt, I, passing over its pulley J, from that on the shaft G, the shaft H being jourualed above thc/table.

K is a corrugated rub board, longitudinally sccured in the tub B, and

L is a corrugated rubber resting thereon, reciprocated by a pitman, H, pivoted thereto, and strapped to the crank of the shaft H.

A yoke, N, straddles the pitman, and to the ends of its forks the front end of the rubber is suspended, whereby, in its reciprocation, it is also oscillated.

The fabrics to be cleansed being immersed in the `hot snds contained in the tub, the laundress introduces a garment between the rubber and rub-board, and,

working the treadle, reciprocates the rubber, which rolls the garment back and forth undery the pressure of its weight, which may be regulated as circumstances require. As fast as one part ,of the fabric is cleansed the laundress moves it along, until the entire fabric has been -submit-ted to the action of the rubber.

The degree of oscillation in the rubber may be varied by moving the yoke to or from the pit-man.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The construction and arrangement ofthe frame A, tub B, rub-board K, rubber L,V ptman M, yoke N,

cranked shafts C and H, pulleys G'and J, {1y-wheel' F, and treadle D, substantially as shown and set fort-h, for the purposes specified.
