Description

divided Stam @met Gettin.
JOSEPH SHERMAN, OF OOOPERSVIILE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSEIJE AND WILLIAM SHERMAN.
Letters Patent No. 103,935, dated June 7, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED 'FEED AND WATER-TROUG-H.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, J osEPn. SHERMAN, of Ooopersville, Ottawa county, lllichigan, have made a certain new and useful invention, called by me a Combined Feed andVater-Trough, to be used in feeding and fattening swine, of which the following is a specification.
The figure represents a perspective view of my inventiou.
The part shown in the figure by T T is the feedtrough proper. Y
The part N is so constructed as to lean outwardly, `as shown in the figure.
The back part of the trough is made to slant in an opposite direction, upon about the same angle, and
forms thc bottom of the grain or feed-chamber F.
The feed-trough is made in two sect-ions, shown in the figure by T and T. A
Each division is provided with a door or cover, attached, by .suitable hinges, to the front part of the grain-chamber F.
These doors H H open upward, as shown in the figure.
The grain or feed-chamber F is constructed of boards or planks, of any desired capacity, and is provided with the cover or roof It, so constructed as to exclude rain or snow, and `may be attached by hinges either to the back or front ofthe'chamber F.
The front portion of the chamber extends'downward into the trough, so as to. leave a small space between its lower edge and the slant-ing bottom of the chamber and trough, already described.
If desired, this front may be provided with a slide, working perpendicularly, so as to increase 01 decrease the size ofthe opening from the trough into the feedchalnber. p
In the figure, T represents a water-trough, formed substantially as 'the feed-trough, kwith the exception that the back portion `is made perpendicular, as shown in the figure.
This trough is also provided with a door, H', working upon hinges in the same manner as the doors H H,- already described.
W represents a water-tank or reservoir, constructed in any suitable manner, placed upon a platform just back of the water-trough, as shown in the drawing.
This water-tank is provided with a slideaucet, O, opening into the water-trough.
Thel door, H', to the water-trough is provided with a bent level', B, one end of which is attached to the upper side of the door H', and so arranged that the other cud is pressed upon the slide- S of the faucet O whenever the door H is raised, thus opening thefaucet, allowing the water to How freely into the trough unt-il the door is again closed. i
An ordinary barrel or tub maybe used-in the place of the water-tank, already described, and the trough proper may be divided into several parts with a separate door for each part, or may be 'made in a single feed-trough, with a single door.
In using in v invention, the feed-chamber F is .filled with grain or feed, and the door or cover R is closed. The water-tank NV is also filled with water. The doors H H and H` are then closed. The swine rase\ the doors H H, and feed themselves, the grain or feed pressing down into the trough as it is removed bythe swine gY and, when they vbecome satisfied, and withdraw, the doors are closed by their own weight, thus preventing other stock or fowls from eating and wasting the feed.
When the swine raise the door H of the watertrongh, the bent lever B presses upon the slide S of the faucet O, opening the faucet, and causing the water to ow freely into the trough T. The swine withdrawing from the water-trough, the cover H is closed by its own weight, and the water ceases to flow.
Having thus described my invention,
That I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by LettersTatent, is-- A combined feed and water-trough, to be used for feeding and fattening swine, composed Yof the feedchamber F, the feed-trough 'l T, provided with doors H H,'the water-tank W, provided with the slide-titucct O, and the water-trough '1" and cover H', provided with the bent lever L, all constructed, arranged, and operated substantially as above described.
