To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that I, JAMns E. CooPER, of Perry, in the county of Wyoming and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pocket Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin a part of this specification, and to the re erence-numerals marked thereon.

My present invention relates to combination pocket implements and it has for its object to provide a device of this character having the function of'a bottle opener suitable for removing caps of beer and similar bottles.

My improvements are directed in part to simplifying the structure that performs this function and so arranging the parts that other functions of the knife or implement are not interfered with.

To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims of the specification.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a pocket knife constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention, the same being shown in its operative position with respect to a bottle for removing the ca thereof; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the knlfe with the blade extended for other purposes; Fig. 3 is an edge view, and Fig. 4 is anenlarged detail of the bottle opening parts.

The general features of the knife illustrated are of the usual character, its structure comprisin a handle formed by side plates 1 and inclosing between them .the usual knife spring 2. Also pivoted between the ends of these plates by means of its tang 3 is a blade or implement 4 capable of the extended position of Fig. 2 and the closed or folded position of Fig. 1 against or within the handle, as usual.

In the practice of my invention I form the ends of the plates or handle portions 1 adjacent to the pivotal point of the blade to produce an offset, hooked jaw 5. The tang 3 of the knife blade is also provided with a complementary hooked jaw or pro ect on 6 on the back side of the blade, which side is exposed by projecting slightly beyond the handle plates 1 when the blade is in closed or folded position. This projection 6 extends in an opposite direction from the point of the blade and is so disposed that it arranges itself opposite the jaw 5 on the handle when the parts are in the last mentioned position. It can therefore be hooked beneath the crimped edge of a bottle cap 7, as shown in Fig.1, to exert an upward or lifting thrust, while the jaw portion 5 of the handle rests on the top of the cap, as does the corresponding member in the ordinary opener, the knife handle and the blade itself being conjointly utilized as the handle of the opener with which to pry off the cap.

When the knife blade 4 is to be used for its ordinary purposes it opens up, as usual, and the jaw or projection 6 acts as the abutment which engages the end of the spring 2 to take the thrust on the blade. At this time the jaw 5 on the handle, it will be seen,

In forming the knife handle for the purposes above described I prefer to make both ends of the plates 1 alike so that these plates are not only interchangeable but the hook or projection 8 at the opposite end may serve as a lguard for the point of a cork screw or ot er implement 9 secured at 10 between centrally arranged lugs 11 on the plates 1.

A combination knife constructed in accordancewith my invention adds to the other functions thereof, the feature of the opener with very little extra work in the construction of the parts and consequently at a small additional cost, while the appearance of the article as a whole is neat and attractive.

I claim as my invention:

1. In an article of the character described, the combination with a handle, of an implement pivoted to said handle at one end and having folded and extended positions with reference thereto, and two jaws, one of which is formed on the implementintermediate its free end and the pivot and the other on the handle, constituting a bottle cap lifter, said jaws being oppositely disposed in operative relation when the implement is in folded position with relation to the handle.

2. In an article of the character described, the combination with a handle, of an implement pivoted to said handle at one end and having folded and extended positions.

with reference thereto, and two'jaws, one of which is formed on the implement intermediate its free end and the pivot and the other on the handle to constitute a bottle cap lifter, the jaw on the implement being operatively disposed opposite that on the handle when the implement is in folded position and both jaws being arranged to one side of the handle and located, respectively, on opposite sides of a line transverse to the handle and extending through the pivot of the implement.

3. Inan article of the'character described, the combination with a pocketknife comprising a handle-having the usual spring secured between the side plates thereof and a folding blade having its tang pivoted between said plates, of a projecting hook or jaw on the handle adjacent to the pivot and a projecting hook or jaw on the tang of'the blade arranged for disposal in an operative position opposite to the other jaw to form a bottle cap lifter when the blade is closed against the handle, and adapted to abut against the knife spring to limit the movement of the blade when the latter is extended. j

4. The combination with a folding pocket knife comprising a handle, and a blade pivoted thereto to close against the handle, of a projecting hook on the tang of the blade on the side forming the exposed back of the latter when in closed position and adapted to engage beneath the edge of a bottle cap while a portion of the handle s1- multaneously bears on the top of the cap.

5. In an article of the character described, the combination with a pocket knife comprising a handle and a folding blade having its tang pivoted to the handle, of a pro ecting hook or jaw on the handle adjacent to the pivot and a projecting hook or aw on the tang of the blade arranged for disposal in an operative position opposite to the other jaw to form a bottle cap lifter when the blade is closed against the handle, and adapted to swing to the rear of the handle when the blade is extended, the jaw on the handle being then disposed to project on the side of the cutting edge of the blade to constitute an intermediate guard member between the blade and the gripping portion of SADIE CORYELL.
