Specification of Letters Iatent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. FRANCIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates particularly to a package for highly volatile liquids, as for instance ether for anesthesia, and resides in a construction particularly adapted for packing and transportation and especially designed for use as a combined container and dropper.
The inventionfurther resides in the peculiar arrangement and combination of parts and in certain details of construction and in their arrangements and combinations, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the dra wings,Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package embodying my invention, showing the same as in condition for packing and shipping; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough, showing the package as in use; and Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 1, showing the construction of the package after use.
It will be obvious from the following description that the package may be made in various ways and still embody the invention, butfor the purpose of illustration I have herein shown the package in the pre- "ferred form for use. In construction, it comprises a closed body section A in the form of an ordinary can, the heads B and C of which are preferably depressed so as to lie below the ends or chimes of the body, and one of these heads I have shown as recessed circumferentially, the groove being desig nated by the reference-letter (z. The recessed. head, described is formed with two apertures 11 0, preferably at diametrically opposite points and within the groove, these openings constituting air inlet and fluid discharge ports. Extending from each of these apertures or ports is a tubular conductor D of some pliable non-resilient ma: terial, such as soft metal, that will allow of its being turned or bent iiito' different positions and retained in said positions, and
' the discharge end closed by pressure. as by mashing the ends with pliers. Either two independent conductors-as E F-may be employed, as indicated in Fig. 3, or a single continuous conductor may be used, as shown in Fig. 1, extending from port. to port. In either instance the conductor or conductors, when the package is in readiness for shipping and transportation, are bent down flat upon the container head and within the groove formed there-in for that purpose. As thus constructed, the packages may be arranged one upon another in compact manner and to occupy minimum space, and the fragile or bendable portions of the container are entirely protected, so that there is no likelihood of injury to the package.
In use, if the package is made with a single tubular closure for the openings, as shown in Fig. 1, the said closure is cut intermediate of its ends and the portions bent in the manner indicated in Fig. 2, one being preferably curved so that when the package is placed in the proper position the contents will be dispensed drop by drop, air entering through the complementary duct to permit of the discharge of the container contents. If the container is of the construction shown in Fig. 3, wherein separate conductors with pinched ends are used, the end portion of each conductor is nipped off and the conductor tubes bent, as previously described. After the package has been opened and the contents partially used, by pinching together the ends of the severed tubes as indicated at Gr a perfect closure is eflected, whereby the remaining contents of the package may be kept for future use. In the present form of package, usually a can, this can only be accomplished by placing in the opening a cork or rubber stopper or similar device, which is objectionable as it contaminates the ether or other contents and renders it unfit for surgical use.
In filling the packages, fluid is supplied through a central fill opening H, the conductor or conductors being closed, so that the ports are hermetically sealed. After the filling is effected, a cap I isvplaced over the fill opening and soldered to the can head, thus forming a hermetically sealed package.
What I claim as my invention is,
1. A metal container and dropper for volatile liquids, comprising a headed tubular body,'one head being formed with separated vent and discharge apertures, and a recess extending therebetween, and a tubular connection of soft metal uniting the openings and lying normally within the recess.
2. A shipping can for volatile liquids, formed with a depressed heads, one being apertured at spaced points and provided with a soft metal tube uniting the apertures,
said tube lying normally in the plane of the apertured depressed head.
3. A hermetically sealed package comprising a container formed with an inlet and an outlet opening, and a severable soft metal tube leading from said openings and having its ends fixedly secured to said container, said inlet and outlet being opened upon the severance of said tube.
4. A combined shipping package, container and dropper, comprising a closed body having one head formed with separate vent and discharge apertures, and a recess extending therebetween, and a tubular connection of soft metal fixedly secured to said body and uniting said openings and lying normally within said recess;
5. A hermetically sealed package, comprising a container formed ,with an inlet and an outlet opening, and a severable soft metal tube leading from each opening and fixedly secured to said container.
6. A hermetically sealed shipping pack age comprising a closed body having one having an inletand an outlet opening, and
a severable soft metal tube leading from each opening and normally arranged within the space intermediate said head and the plane of said body end.
