LOSE-334194 Original application filed May 18, 1910, Serial No. 561,546.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Divided t1 is application in 15, 1910. Serial No. 592,488.
To all whom it m a concern Be it known that I LEWIS XV. NnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadolphin. Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Dynamo-Electric Machines (being a division of my application for patent for dynamo-electric machines liletl May 16, 1916, Serial No. 56L5M5) of which the following is a specification i One object of my invention is to provide a dynamo electric machine capable use either a generator or as a motor and particularly adapted for iiirect connection to an internal combustion engine in order that said engine may he cranked by the operation of the machine when the letter is supplied with current, sncl may also When Working on its own it """e seicl machine to generate an elect which to sin e a battery u or for any other purpose" A. further object of my invontic'" provide a dynamo electric mach' iarly for use in connc internal combustion engine volving element shall he pull signed to replace the fly whee engine.
I also desire that the machine shall he of a relatively compact and substantial con struction with its parts so arranged. as to occupy :1 minimum space anti of such ole sign as to require but little if any attention under operating conditions.
E further desire to provide c namo elec tric machine of such at construction as Wii particularly adapt it for mounting bet an internal combustion engine l the whereby power from seiai transmitted at will any machine 1 These objects and other cots an ends I secure as hcreinatter set "for ings in which the figure is an enla" tical section of a machine constructed according' to my inventiom showing t ferred arrangement of its parts.
In the above drawings 1 represents one end of an internal combustion on F1 L1G UTE" i any clesirecl type having main cheated. at To the crank case or trio machine which in of the resolving armature tyne. The rear end of said case has nn'iunteti on its inner face Within said osing 3 a fielol yoke 5 carrying a series of pole pieces on which placed the field magnet windings The armature of the machine, as indicated at 7, inclucies a cylindrical sheli 8 concentric with the engine shaft 2 having an in Warcliy pyojcctin hinge 9 directly bolted to a 9 WliCii in the present instance is form 1 t with scicl shaft. it the encl of t e si 8 opposite that connected to the shaft, is an outwardly er ztencling annular Web 10 carrying an annular toothed Iiame if on which is mounted. a laminated ring iature windings ere disthis casing core in the stood by those "killed in positioned by the teeth. of
OI the nole nhte the armature core intlicatesat gerste with similarity 3 of the shell 8 to sup n pie e segments 1&- of h is nountetl on the said shell. within the circle iielcl mag DlQUlll'Ctl the t instance as sulatmg mamn..;net yoke It n'iountetl attached to it a grooved collar 23 splined to a shaft 2% connected to any desired mechanism which it is wished to drive. In order to make a tight connection the fixed casing 3 of the generator and the revolving arma ture 7, one of these two members is provided with a semi-circularly grooved lip 25 into which projects a rib 26 carried by the other member.
If it is desired to start the engine, current is supplied to the dynamo electric machine in any suitable manner whereupon said machine acts as a motor and turns the crank shaft of the engine until such time as the latter starts and runs under its own power. Thereafter in addition to driving any load to which it may be connected, said engine may be used to operate the dynamo electric machine as a generator to provide currentfor the engine ignition system or for any other purpose.
It is to be noted that the distribution of material in the armature is such that this latter is particularly adapted to act as a fly wheel and as a matter of fact is designed to replace this particular element of the engine to which it is attached. By mounting one of the clutch members on this armature structure it is possible-to assemble the various parts in a relatively small space imnlediately adjacent the engine itself, especially since the necessity of an independent fly wheel is obviated. Itwill be noted that the clutch operating spring is contained within the body of the dynamo electric machine whose commutator is likewise so arranged that it economizes space to the greatest possible extent. Moreover this machine is interposed between the shaft to be driven and the driving engine so that the apparatus as a Whole is essentially compact;
this characteristic being particularly due to the employment of a discoidal armature and to the mounting of the commutator within the cavity provided by the armature and field magnets.
I claim:
The combination in a dynamo electric machine of a closed casing; a field yoke mounted on one end of said casing within the same; a shaft extending through the casing; a series of pole pieces mounted on the yoke and projecting in lines parallel to the shaft; field windings mounted on said pole pieces; a cylindrical structure fixed to the shaft in position to be inclosed by the pole pieces and their windings; said cylinder having a flange at one end; a commuta tor mounted on the cylinder; an armature disk fixed to said cylinder and having a portion cooperating with said flange thereof to retain the commutator in place; and an armature with its core carried by said disk and having an air gap lying in a radial plane of the shaft between itself and the pole pieces.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEWIS WV. NELSON.
