To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, DAVID F. Nisenr, citizen of the'United States,'residing at Crafton, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling'Mill 'Appliances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others. skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the type of rolling mill appliances usually known as manipulators, the purpose of which is to arrange an ingot, slab, billet or bar in proper position on the feed tables to enter the desired pass.
The object of my invention is, not only to provide a means for the alinement of the ingot, slab, billet or bar in its proper position in front of the pass, but to turn the ingot, slab or billet so as to present fresh surfaces to the action of the rolls, and more particularly to upturn on edge comparatively wide and thin slabs and hold them in position for edging on either or both sides of the mill.
Another object of my invention is to pro" vide an appliance for rolling mills whereby the ingot, slab or billet, after having passed through the rolls, can be held in position for a return pass through the same groove, or be shifted to other grooves, independently of the mechanism on the leading side of the mill, and which also, when necessary, can be operated so as to move the side guards on the following or catchers side of the mill, so that they will, approximately register with the side guards on the leading or rollers side of the mill, so that in the case of a wide slab on edge, the slab, after passing through the rolls from the leading side of the mill will enter between the side guards on following side, and be maintained in its edgewise position for the return pass.
I am aware that mechanism has been devised for operating the side guardsof mill tables for accomplishing this latter purpose, but these are so devised and constructed as to move all the side guards simultaneously, which is not only unnecessary when rolling some classes of material, but also consumes power uselessly and .entails unnecessary wear. 7

This shaft extends to the opposite side of the mill where a similar mechanism is located for operat ing the side guard 32, by means of the cylinder 39 and 40.
'35 is a lever arm attached to 34 and at its end is provided with a lug .or roje'ction 42 extended toward the lever 36 w ich also has a projection 43 extending toward the lever arm 35, the lugs or projections so arranged as to interfere and act as stops when in certain positions.
The operation of 'my invention is as follows: For convenience of description, I have designated the entire mechanism of the manipulator A and the moving side guard mechanism on the opposite side of the table B, and the apparatus on the opposite side of the mill C and D. The side guard 5, it

'The functions of the cam 17 and friction roller 18 are to cause the moving head 5 to travel across the table parallel to the rollers, when the head is in an elevated position. A modified form of my invention, embodying the same principle, is shown in Fig. 5, the function of the cam being performed in this case by the stationary guide 46, which limits the vertical travel of the roller 45, and consequently the oscillation of the guide 7, the movement of the .head 5 being the same as in the preferred form of appliance hereinbefore described. The length of the slot in the link 21 is equal to the travel of the lever arm 23 at the point of connection to the stop link 21. Therefore, when the moving guide 5 is stopped at any predetermined position, the moving guard 31 of mechanism C will remain at rest, but if it is desired to bring 31 in substantial alinement with 5, Water is admitted into the cylinder 28 of mechanism C, which will force the guard 31 to move over until the pin 24 comes in contact with the end of the slotted stop link 21, and there will stop because the cylinder 15 of mechanism A is of practically the same area as cylinder 28 of mechanism 0. .Inpractice, I put cylinders 15 and 29 on a constant pressure line and make 14 large enough to overcome 15, and 28 large enough to overcome 29. The operation of mechanism B andfD is as follows: The shaft 34 extends to a point near to the end of the operating shaft 41 of mechanism D, and is in substantial aline- On the adjacent ends of the shafts 34 and 41 are the lever arms 35 and 36, having interlocking lugs or projections 42 and 43, the lug 42 being in front or toward the mill with reference to 43. lVhen the guard 33 of mechanism B is stopped at any given point, the shaft 34 carries the arm 35 and lug 42 with it and it is evident that if the guard-32 of mechanism D is moved over, it can only move to a point Where the lug 43 will make contact with the lug 42, and there sto since, as in the case of mechanisms A an C the pressures in the cylinders 37 and 40 oppose each other and form an equilibrium.
. Although the description of the mechanism and operation has been confined largely to that of a manipulator for blooming mills, I do not intend to limit its application to this practice, as for instance I can use it in whole or part on bar mills, and by slmrtcning the downwardly project-ing lugs on the moving guard 5 and changing the shape, I can not only push a bar or billet over a table, but can reach over it and pull it back. A rolling mill appliance, comprising a roller feed-table of a rolling mill, a longitudinal side-guard adapted to move laterally with reference to said roller feed-table, supporting beams attached to the side-guard slidably mounted, trunnioned guides pivotally mounted in stationary bearings to carry the said supporting beams, and means for oscillating the said guides in a vertical plane for the purpose ofraising or lowering the said side-guard.
2. A rolling mill appliance comprising roller feed tables, longitudinal side guards adapted to move laterally with reference to the feed' tables, means for actuating the said side guards through links attached to levers mounted on an oscillating shaft, beams for supporting the side guards, a trunnioned guide for the supporting beams adapted to oscillate in a vertical plane, means for actuating the said trunnioned guide, and means for compelling the transverse travel of the moving side guard to be approximately parallel to the surface of the rollers of the feed tables when the said side guard is in its raised position.

A rolling mill appliance comprising roller feed tables, longitudinal side-guards adapted to move laterally with reference to the feed tables, means for actuating the said side-guards through links attached to levers mounted on an oscillating shaft, beams for supporting the side guards, a trunnioned guide for the supporting beams adapted to oscillate in a vertical plane, means for oscillating the said trunnioned guide, a roller attached near one extremity of the trunnioned guide, and a cam mounted on the said oscillating shaft, of such projection of lobe as will limit the oscillatory movement of the trunnioned guide by contactwith the said roller, and of such peripheral'contour as will compel the transverse travel of the moving side guard to be -a proximately parallel" to the surface of the r91 ers of the feed tables when the said sideguard is in its raised position. 4. A rolling mill appliance com rising the feed-tables on each side of a rolling mill, side-guards. mounted above each table, mechanism whereby each side-guard can be moved transversely to the tables, a shaft operated by the actuating power of the app iance on one side ofthe mill and extending to the appliance on the opposite side of the mill, termmating with alever-arm and a slotted link attached to the said lever-arm, adapted to engage a member on the actuating mechanism of the appliance on the opposite side of the mill, whereby the transverse travel of the side-guard on one side of the mill can be restricted to that of the sideguard of the other side of the mill, thereby ringing themin approximate alinement.
