LONG and Gnomes Bunuss, citizens of the United States, and residents of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain useful Starting Device for l'nternal Combustion Engines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved means for starting internal combustion engines and has particular application to the starting of automobile engines, whereby the driver will not be compelled to leavethe seat in order to start the The particular feature lies in the manner in which the fly wheel of the engine is gripped and rotated whereby it is not necessary that the engine'remain on compression during the time it is stopped.
Another featureof the invention is the mpans by which the parts are returned to their normal and idle position.
The nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.

In detail there is shown in the drawings a portion of the automobile chassis with an internal combustion engine mounted thereon. Said chassis has longitudinal members 11 and 12 and transverse members 13 and 14f. The engine 10 maybe of any desired construction and supported in. any'desired manner although here shown as mounted in connection'with the transverse member 14.
A hand lever 17 pivoted between its ends to the longitudinal member 12 of the chassis frame and extending vertically upward from said chassis, is pivoted to a connecting bar 18 whose other end is pivoted to a lever arm 19 fulcrumed between its ends at 20 on the transverse member 13 of the ciassis frame, and having a segmental gear 21 on its other end. Said segmental gear meshes with a pinion 22 pivoted at 23 on the transverse bar 13 and rigidly secured to a second pinion 24 on the same shaft. The pinion 24 has preferably a greater number of teeth than the pinion 22 and meshes with a second segmental gear pivoted at 26 on the transverse member 13-and having a lever arm 27. A cable 28 or other flexible connection whose line of motion may be changed, is connected to a loop or eye 29 on a lever arm 30 of a friction band 31 and has its path of motion changed by passing over a pulley 32.
The periphery of the fly wheel 16 is substantially surrounded by the flexible metallic band 31. preferably of tempered steel as shown in Fig. 5, with one end pivoted at to one end of the lever arm 30 and with the other end also pivoted to said lever arm 30 but ata point more remote from the end. A return mechanism,hereafter described, is connected by a flexible connection 34 to a point substantially midway of the lever 30. The end of the friction band 31 which is pivoted t. the lever arm 30 has the central portion'thereof cut away with the remaining portions bent to form loops which surround the pivot 33 on said lever, and the other end of said friction band also has its central portion cut away and the ends similarly formed into loops 36, but of such dimensions that the loops 36 may pass freely between the loops 35. The loops 36 are pivoted to the lever arm 30 by means of a pin 37 extending t-heret-hrough, as shown in Fig. 5. The lever arm 30 has a projecting toe 38 extending at an angle of substantially 135 degrees with the line of said lever from the end near the pivot 33. A tightening of the cable 28 will cause the lever 30 to take the position shown in Fig. 6, tightening the friction band 41 about the periphery of the fiy' wheel and the projecting toe of said lever will press the band 31 between the loops 35 tightly against the fly Wheel.
