UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED PEAnsnor HAMPSTEAD nam mamm, ENGLAND.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
England, have invented certain new and useful 'Improvements Relating to Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to advertising devices and has for its object to provide simple and effective means to effect the movement of figures used as advertisements on hoardings in order 'to enhance their attractiveness and effect. I
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a diagrammatic View of a six advertisement hoarding with mechanism'in which the counter or driving shaft is disposed horizontally. Fig. 2 is a corresponding view of a mechanism in which the driving shaft is vertically disposed. Fig. 3 is a detail end view of the operating gearof a mechanism in which the movement is communicated to the figure parts by means ofcrank plates. Fig. 4 is'a detail end elevation of the preferred form of roller shaft bearing: Fig. 5 is a rear view of a device operated by a common reciprocating mem-- ber. Fig. 6 is a front view corresponding thereto. Fig. 7 is a side elevation. Fig. 8 is a view of a modified form of reciprocating mechanism.
In carryingthe invention into effect according to one particular arrangement a number, for example, six advertisements, are provided upon a hoarding, each conveniently of the same size and disposed in two series of three. The driving shaft 2 may be horizontally disposed between the respective series 3 of the advertisements, (Fi 1) and may extend into a position immedlately behind the hoarding so as to occupy the least amount of space, being carried at suitable intervals by roller bearings 7. It may be driven by an electric motor 1, reducing gear being provided by means of which the speed may be reduced. Box or cylindrical cams may be mounted upon the shaft 2 in position adjacent to the respective advertisements which cams may each be provided with a I continuous channel or groove 5 so formed as to give to the operat ing part of the figures or advertisement the necessary movement that is required, by
I Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 10, 1912, 7 Application filed April 10, 1909. Serial No. 489,179. I J
means of. links 6 adapted to engage the channels 5. The respective advertisements above and below the shaft may be operated I,
by the same or different cams.
It is obvious that the invention is not limited to any particular manner of communlcatlng movement from the driving .member to the operating part of particular advertisements as any suitable means may be provided for the purpose. For example each advertising device may be provided as illustrated in Fig. 3 with a crank plate 10 mounted upon a spindle in a'bracket 11 which is disposed in a position adjacent to the operating member 14 of each figure and means may be provided to effect the movement of this spindle such, for example, as a. pair of'bevel wheels 15 one of which may be mounted upon the common driving shaft 2. When providing such bevel gear the bevelpinions are preferably divided in symmetrical parts sov as to be capable of being caused to encircle the shaft and secured thereon for convenience in assembling, the parts being held together and caused to grip the shaft by means. of screws or bolts 16.. when employing a common rotatin driving. shaft the shaft is advantageous y pro vided fromatube for convenience in cutting to particular lengths. Again, the bearings may be advantageously provided in such form (Fig. 4) as to occasion the least possible friction and the bearings may be of a standard form for convenience in construction; the rollers or disks 17 are carried by spindles 18 mounted upon a split bracket 7. The respective operating mechanism of each advertisement may also be provided of a standard pattern and when employing a crank disk a radial slot or slots 12 is provided therein by means of which the necessary adjustment of the crank pin 13 may be made in order to determine with exactness the movement to be imparted to particular In such 7 formed with bearings Z) and e for the spin- I an electric motor.
dle of the wheel 0 and a spindle'd, respectively. The wheel 0 is arranged with the plane at right angles to the hoarding surface and is constantly rotated by means of A cam surface I is formed upon the face of the wheel 0 which upon rotation is thus adapted to engage with and oscillate the arm 25 which is fixed upon the spindle d at the middle thereof. On the spindle d is also fixedly mounted a toothed segmenth engaging with the toothed portion a of the bar j which is carried by means of flanged rollers 70, carried by spindles fixed to the hoarding; separate bars j may be coupled together to provide for the operation of adjacent advertisements as shown at f, Fig. 5. A spring to may be attached to the end of the bar j and to the hoarding so as always to tend to draw the bar in the direction opposite to that in which it is moved by the action of the cam surface g. The movable head of the figure in the left hand panel is connected through slots p with the bar 7' by means of arms, or an arm 0 secured to the bar and the movable arm which is pivoted at g is connected thereto by means of the crank 1" and connecting pieces 8.
Provision may be made for producing sound, whistling or like effects or for infiating certain parts of the advertisement. For this purpose a small bellows is used or other suitable pneumatic device is provided and is operated by the bar 7' through a slotted arm 4;.
In the mechanism shown in Fig. 8 the bar j is carried upon a bracket a entirely separate from the hoarding and is provided with bent end carrying a roller n which engages directly with a cam g fixed upon the spindle of the pulley wheel.
What I do claim as my invention and de sire to secure by Letters Patent is Advertising devices comprising an operating member, means adapted to operate said member, advertising figures composed of movable parts, inflatable parts, and sound producing parts, bellows connected to the inflatable parts and the sound producing parts and means connecting the operating member. to the movable parts of the advertising figures and the bellows.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED PEARSE.
