Beit known that LnCHARLES L. citizen of the United States, andresident of .Millington, in. the county of Morris and State of New J ersey, have invented a new and" useful Improvement in Machines for Transparentizing Sheets of Paper or other Material, of which the following is a specificationp The object of this invention is to provide certain improvements a machine for transparentizing sheets of paper or other materiaL I 'The machine includes a bath of transparf leenti'zing liquid, a set of drying rolls, and a sheet carrier arranged to convey the sheets beiiig treated from the bathto the drying rol s.

The bottom wall of the pan is denoted by 2, the'side-walls by 3 and 4, the front wall by 5 and the rear wall by 6. v
. A transverse trough is provided in the. front end of the pan, forming a reservoir: for the bath liquid 7. The downward and.
forward inclination of the bottom 2 of the pan will direct the liquid dropped thereon back into the said trough.
Upper and lower feed rolls 8,. 9, have their shafts 10, 11, rotatably mounted in suitable brackets 12, l3,secur'ed to the uprising sides3, 4, of the pan, in such a position that the lower feed roll 9 will be substantially immersed in the liquid bath 7. The lower roll 9 is driven from the upper roll 8 through intermeshing gears 14, 15,
fixed to theirrespective shafts adjacent to the bracket 12. The/shaft 10 of theup per feed roll may bejou'rnaled in spring pressed boxes 16, 17,. whereby the said roll may be pressed against the lower roll with the desired amount of pressure.
The upper roll 8 is driven from-a driving shaft 18 through-intermeshing gears'l9, 20,
adjacent to the bracket 13. This shaft 18' is herein shown-as a crank shaft rotated manually by means of a crank handle 21, I

A supplemental frame 22 has its base 23 resting upon-a horizontal seat 24 formed in the pan, which supplemental frame maybe adjusted forwardly and rearwardly and secured in such adjusted positions by bolts 25 passing through elongated slots 26 in the said base 23 into engagement with the-said seat 24. 1 1
Upper and lower hollow drying rolls 27,
28, have their hollow shafts 29, 30, rotatably mounted in journal boxes 31, 32, carried by the supplemental frame 22. The upper dry-' ing roll 27 isheld against the lower drying roll with the proper pressure by providing the journal boxes 31 with uprising .pins 33 on. which rest the levers 34 pivoted at 35 to the supplemental frame and provided with adjustable weights 36.
The lower drying roll 28 is driven from the shaft 18 .by providing achain and sprocket connection 37, 38, 39, between the shaft 18 and the shaft 30 exterior to the an.
The upper dryingroll 27 isdriven romv the lower drying roll 28 through inter-meshing gears 40, 41.
A sheet carrier is provided for conveying the sheets from the set of feed rolls 8, 9, to the set of dryin rier, the tapes 42 of which pass around a shaft 43 adjacent to the feed rolls 8, 9, and
,arounda shaft 44 adjacent the drying rolls 2?, 28.
The shaft 43 is mounted in the brackets 12, 13, and is driven from the upper feed roll 8 through intermeshing gears 45, 46. The shaft 44 is mounted in brackets 47 pivoted at 48 to the supplemental frame 22. The tension on the tapes 42 may be adjusted by means of adjusting screws 49 carried by the brackets 47 and bearing against the supplemental frame 22.
A delivery roll 50 has its shaft 51 mounted in suitable brackets 52 secured to the supplemental frame 22, which delivery roll is driven' from the lower drying roll 28 through a train of gears 53, 54, 55.
A guide plate 56 is interposed between the delivery roll and the set of drying rolls for guiding the sheets from the drying rolls over the delivery roll.
.A receptacle 57 is mounted on the main frame 1 of the machine below the delivery poll 50 in position to receive the sheets thererom.
Means are provided for heating the liquid bath 7 and the drying rolls 27 28, which means is herein shown as an electrical heat ing apparatus of well known and approved form, a general description only of which willbe herein given.
The wiring is denoted by 58, the main switch by 59, the rheostat by 60 and the fuse box by 61. A stationary conduit 62 is 10-" catedwithin the liquid bath 7 at the bottom of the trough immediately beneath the lower feed roll 9 within which conduit are located the heating, coils 63 connected to the wiring 58. Stationary conduits 64, 65, extend through the hollow shafts 29, 30, and drying rolls 27, 28, which conduits carry the heating coils 66, 67 connected to the wiring 58.
These conduits 64, 65, are secured at their ends in depending arms 68 of brackets 69 I secured to the top caps 70 of the suppleinflital frames 22.
Blotting sheets 71, 72, are wrapped around wallow-c Q7. "28. the tail endsof rolls 27, 28, which sheet carrier 1S hereln shown as an endless tape carwhich blotting sheets are free so as to permit a free expansion and contraction of the blotting sheets due to varying degrees of moisture taken up treated, without possibility of the blotting sheets becoming wrinkled or torn. 'These blotting 'sheetsare oppositely wound and fenders 73, 74, are secured to the supplemental frame 22 in position to engage the free tail ends of the blot-ting sheets upon opposite sides of the delivery end of the sheet carrier so as to insure the feeding'in of from the sheets being the'shee't being treated between said blotting sheets. The advance'edges of these blotting sheets may or may not be secured to the drying rolls, the direction of rotation of the 'rolls serving totend to wind the blotting sheets tightly thereon.
It will be seen that the leading end of the sheet carrier and the lower feeding roll are both immersed in the liquid bath 7. i i
As the sheet to be treated is fed in between the feeding rolls and delivered thereby onto the tapes 42 of the sheet carrier, the sheet will be caused to adhere to the wet tapes sufliciently to cause the tapes to convey the sheet upwardly and rearwardly into positionto .deliver the same to the drying rolls.
The combined action of the blotting sheets and the'heatof the drying rolls, will rapidly dry the sheet being treated, the sheet passing over the table 56 as' itleaves the dryingrolls to the delivery roll 50, which delivery roll guides the sheets into position to be dropped into the receptacle 57.
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit-and scope of my invention; hence I dof'hot wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but i f What I claim is 1.
