Patented Sept.3, 1912.
.- :To-i all-whom iii-may. concern 1i. Be it. knownathat I,"-W'ILLIA1v1 S. Enmo'rr, of Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, Pennsylwania=, have.' invented a new and useful I1n .iprovement 1n Fastening'Dev-ices for Doors, @overs,: &c., of which the following 18 a which i J Figure 1 is a iplan view illustrating my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section; and- Fig. 3 is a iPlELH' VIQW SllOWlng a modification.
My invention has relation to .fastenings for doors, covers, etc., being applicable gen-: erally foreuse in securing any removable member in place. The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character-which is simple in its construction andwhichcan-be easily and cheaply manufactured and applied.
Referring to the drawings, the. numeral 2 designates a portion of a door or. cover plate, and 3 a portion of the memberagainst.
which the door or cover plate seats.
4: designates a double-ended bolt having an enlarged central portion 5, one of the threaded ends of the bolt being screwed into the member 3, and the opposite end portion of the bolt projecting upwardly through an opening 6 in the cover or door member, within which opening the enlarged portion 5 loosely seats.
7 designates a slotted washer, which is adapted to engage the upper threaded portion of the bolt and to seat across the upper end of the opening 6 and between such upper end and the under side of the nut 8. This slotted washer is preferably attached to the cover or plate member, so that it will not become lost or displaced. In the construction shown this is effected by means of the chain 9, which is attached at its opposite end to a ring 9*. 10 designates the usual gasket in the seating face of the nut 2. a
It will be readily seen that with the parts in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the door or cover member will be securely held in its closed position; but that it can be readily removed by loosening the nut 8, which acts as a lock for the washer, and then. withdrawing the washer from engagement with the bolt. To again fasten the door or cover member, all that is necessary is to reinsert the-slotted washer and tighten the nut. Preferably, the upper part of the .zenlargedaportio-n 5 of the bolt is tapered orbeveled as indicated, so as to act as a guide forthe door or the cover: int bring- :sing it to its-seat against the member 3.
ll-hediameter of the opening 6 is preferably suflicientlyl' larger than the maximum diiameter' of the. enlarged portion 5 so as to give.suificientclearance to prevent binding orsticking. The washer 7 is made suffioiently larger in diameter than the diameter ofa'athe opening 6 so as to give it a secure a seat. upon the edges of the opening.
.Inathemodificat-ion shown in Fig. 3, there are a plurality of the fastening devices above wdescribed-yand instead of providing a sepa z-rate slotted washer 7 for each of the bolts 4, I provide a continuous strap 11 having a series of slots 12, there being one-slot for each of the bolts. This construction is especially applicable to large sized doors or cover plates where a plurality of fasteningsis employed; and by forming the washers asone continuous strap, all the fasten ing devices can be simultaneously released or secured.
The device forms a very simple and effective one for the purpose described. It can be readily applied; there are no loose parts to become misplaced or lost; and the simple withdrawal or application of the slotted washer member effects the release or securing of the device.
What I claim is 1. A fastening device for doors, covers, eto., comprising a bolt projecting rigidly from one of the members to be connected, and having a clamping member at its outer end, the other member to be connected having an opening therein sufliciently large to be passed over the, bolt and its clamping member, means for centering the bolt with respect to the said opening, and a locking mem r arranged to engage the bolt adjacent to its clamping member; substantially as described.
2. A fastening device for doors, covers, etc., comprising a double ended bolt having an enlarged central portion, a part of which is tapered or beveled to form a guide member, and a slotted member adapted to engage one end portion of the bolt; substantially as described.
3. In a fastening device for doors, covers, and the like, the combination with the part to be fastened, of a bolt projecting rigidly from one of said parts and having a clamping member at its outer end, the other part having an opening of suflicient diameter to pass over the bolt and its clamping member, a slotted locking device arranged to engage the bolt adjacent to the clamping member, and means for causing the bolt to be substantially concentric within the said opening when the parts are fastened; substantially as described.
4. In a fastening device of the character described, the combination with a seating member having a double ended bolt secured therein, of a removable member having an opening adapted to fit over a portion of the bolt, and a slotted locking member adapted to seat across the said opening and to engage the bolt, together with a nut on the bolt to act as a clamp for the locking member; substantially as described.
In a fastening device, the combination with a seating member, a double ended bolt secured in said member and projectin therefrom, said bolt having an enlarge central portion, a removable member having an opening adapted to inclose the enlarged portion of the bolt, a slotted locking member arranged to engage the outer end portion of the bolt, and clamping means for Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
the locking member; substantially as described,
6. In a fastening device of the character described, a seating member, a bolt secured therein and having an enlarged central portion, a removable member having an opening within which said enlarged central portion is adapted to seat, a locking member arranged to engage the outer portion of the bolt, and means for securing and releasing the locking member; substantially as described.
7 In a fastening device of the character described, the combination of the seating member having a plurality of bolts secured thereto and having projecting portions formed with enlargements, and a removable member having openings adapted to fit over the projecting portions and enlargements of the bolts, a slotted locking member common to the series of bolts and adapted to seat over the said openings, and clamping nuts on the bolts; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
WVILLIAM S. ELLIOTT.
