Description

N. MARTINO.
LIFE PRESERVER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 15, 1912.

8 mm ntoz Wall/ ino. 3 OLHM) f I z UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATALE MARTINO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LIFE-PRESERVER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NATALE MARTINO, a subjectof the King of Italy, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Life-Preservers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this class which may be worn in a collapsed or expanded state, according to the desire of the wearer, and then in a collapsed state it may be worn beneath a coat or other garment.
For a more particular description of my invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved life preserver in its collapsed condition. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same when inflated and in the position worn by a person using the same.
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
My improved life preserver 1 is provided with a belt '2 adapted to be secured about the body of a wearer, which belt is provided with straps 3 adapted to engage buckles A and shoulder straps 5, all of which may be of any desired construction. The belt 2 is also provided with buttons 6 adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 15, 1912.
Patented Sept. 3, 1912.
Serial No. 697,390.
engage tabs 7 on air bags 8 secured on their upper ends to the belt 2, and shaped substantially as shown, or in a similar manner. Each bag 8 is provided'with an inflation tube 9 that has a suitable valve, and this tube is long enough in each instance to reach the mouth of the wearer so that when he wishes to use the belt he unbuttons the tabs 7 and inflates each air bag 8 to the position shown in Fig. 2, at which time these air bags are adjacent to the shoulder blades of the wearer, and in such a position as to support him without interfering with his movements when swimming.
While I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, itis obvious that it is not restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures that come within the scope of the annexed claim.
WVhat I claim is In a device of the class described, a belt provided-with suitable straps for securing the same about the waist of a wearer, shoulder straps on the upper edge of said belt, air bags secured at one end near the said shoulder straps, tabs on said air bags, buttons adapted to be engaged by said tabs and air pipes for inflating said bags.
