To atw'wm it may concern: o v l Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. PATCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have `invented certain new and useful Improvefor controlling. the operation of punching.
machines, particuiarly2v machines designed for the purpose of punching rivet and bolt holes in structural iron or steel, whereby the holes punched arecaused to conform i arrangement to a certain vpredetermined pat` tern without the necessity of previously marking out this pattern on the work itself.
One object of my invention is to provide a machinesof the character above referred to in which may be used a paper or other` pattern or templet upon which appears, upon a reduced scale, the design to which the holes in the work are to conform, which pattern or templet may be a working drawing, in accordance with whichthe work is being prepared, or a blueprint thereof.
A further object of my invention is to produce a machine of the nature referred to which shall be entirely automatic in its operation, requiring the attention vof an operator only in startin `and stopping the same for the purpose o supplying new material to be punched or for changing the pattern.
Tonthese ends my invention preferablyY comprises two carriages, one adapted to carry a perforated pattern or templet and` the other constructed tofeed the material to be punched to suitable punching mechanism,
which carriages are arranged to be moved at relative speeds proportional to the scale upon which the pattern is made, a devlce `adapted `to engage the pattern, and means whereby, when said device encounters a perforatin in the pattern,y the feeding movenient wilttgxe temporarily suspended and a hole punched in the work, after which the feeding movement will be automatically continued. In place, however, of a movable pattern ortemplet and a stationaryv device coperating therewith, I may, if desired, employ a stationary pattern and' lso construct the mechanism as to cause the coplerating device to be moved, over the same,

In the accompanying drawings, in which I'haveillustrated one construction in which `my invention may be embodied, I have not shown in detail the punching mechanism, as anyjs'uitable or preferred formof such mechanism may be employed, buthave illustrated only as much thereof as will be necessary to the complete understandin-g of the controlling mechanism in which my invention consists.

Mounted 'upon a series of uprights, 12, 1Q, are bearing boxes 13, 13, in which are jour` naled a series of parallel shafts 14.-, 14, carrying rollers 15 and -16 for supporting the beam, late, or other article to be punched. T e uprights 12, 12,`are preferably four 1n number, arranged with two at either end of the machine as shown in Fig. 4, but it 'will' be obvious that a different .number might be employed if desired. The
bearing boxes 13 are preferably connected to the uprights 12 by means of adjusting screws 17, whereby the vertical position of the rollers 15 and 16 may be adjusted in accordance with the requirements of the Work'. The rollers 15 are preferably rigidly mounted on the shafts 14, while the rollers 16 are loosely'mounted for movement longitudinally thereof to accommodate work of different widths, and are provided with annular grooves 18 for the reception of the flanges of I-beams and channels, as shown in Fig. 5. In front of the uprights 12 are aplurality of horizontal parallel tracks 19, upon which run rollers 20, supporting a carriage 21, carrying the operating mechanism of the machine. One set of rollers 20 is mounted upon a horizontal shaft 22, journaled in the carriage 21, and provided with one or `more pinions 23, engaging a corresponding rack or racks 24, arranged parallel to the tracks 19. The shaft 22 also carries a bevel pinion 25, coperating with a corres onding pinion 26, carried by a vertical s aft 27, journaled in the carriage 21 and provided with a suitable hand Wheel 28. It will be seen that rotation of the hand wheel 28 will result in movement of the carriage 21 toward or from the uprights12. By this means the machine ma be adjusted to accommodate work of di erent widths.

It will now be seen that as the pattern carriage 35 is moved along its Ways 34, by mechanism hereinafter described, the contact pin 45 will ride over the surface of the pattern or templet 36, and that when a perforation 47 is encountered said pin will drop through the same, thus closing the` circuit from the battery 48 through the contact plate 38. Thev closing of this circuit results in setting into operation' certain mechanism hereinafter described.
The means whereby the pattern or templet and the beam or other member to be punched are given their corresponding feeding movements will now be described.
The pattern carriage v35 is vprovided on its under side with a rack 49 engaged by a pinion 50, suitably journaled in' the frame of the carriage 21, said pinion 50'engaging a gearl, mounted on a shaft 52,.also journaled in the frame of the carriage 21. The shaft 52 carries at one end a hand wheel 53, whereb the parts may be moved and adjusted by hand if desired, and at its other end a pinion 54, enga ing a rack 55, on a feed carria e I56, pre erably mounted on rollers 57 see Fig. 5), suitably journaled in the frame of the carriage 21. The electrical circuits, appliances, whereby the operation of the punching mechanism is controlled by.v the devices above described, are illustrated in diagrammatic form in 12, and will now be described. These appliances include, in addition to those heretofore referred to, "a manually operated main switch 66 for con-y trolling the admission ofv current from any suitable sourceof supply to the machine asa whole, a manually operated reversing switch 67 for controlling the direction of notation of the motor 29, a manually operated -magnet switch 68 for cont-rolling the electromagnets 64 and .65, a pair of bus bars 69y and 70 from which the current is distributed to the various circuits hereinafter referred to, a manually operated speed controller 71 for the motor 29,a switch 72 adapted to be controlled bythe punch carrying head 73 as hereinafter described, an electrically controlled clutchl 74 for starting and stopping the punching mechanism, and five electrically controlled switches 75, 76, 7 7, 78 and 79, together with certain circuits, hereinafter described, for
operatively connecting these various appliances.
The switches 66, 67, and 68 together with the bus bars 69 and 70 may be of any suitable .well known or and are preferably arra ed upon a switch board located at a convenlent distanoejfrom the Inachine.
The electromagnetic switch 75 is preferably constructed as shown and comprises a frame 80, lcontaining an electromagnet 81, provided with an armature 82, carrying an insulated contact bar 83, coperating with suitable contact points '84 and 85. The switches l75, 76, 77, 78 and 79 may all be of substantially the same construction, the switches 7 5- and 76, however, being arranged to open the circuits governed by them when their magnets are energized, while the switches 77, 78 and 79 are arranged to close their corresponding circuits when energized;

The operation of the above described, mechanism 'is as follows: Assuming the cartriages 35 andl 56 to be at substantially their limit of movement in` one direction, the switch 67 turned so'as to cause the motor, when started, to move these carriages for- Ward in the opposite direction,` a beam or `other member to beV punched placed upon the 'rolls 15 and 16 and a pattern or templet 'in position on` the carriage 35. The operator Znow allows thearm 40 to drop, causlng the contactpin 45t-o restupon the surface of the tpattern, and throws in the switches 66 and 68. Current is'at once supplied to the bus ybars 69 and 70 and passes through the switch 68,to'the'ma'gnets 64 and 65thus securely .clamping .the work to the carriage 56. The circuits 98 and 102 are 'at-.this time closed, the `parts beingin substantially the position' shownin' Fig. k12, and current passes from the Ibusbar 69 through the controller 71 to the motor. .The machine being thus started the carriages 35 and 56 are fed forward until the contact pin 45 encounters a perforation in the pattern, when it immediately drops therethrough and closes the battery circuit 97 through the contact plate38.v Current at once passes to the magnets Vof the switches 78 and 79, causing' these switches immediately to close circuit 99, over which current now passes from the bus bar 69 to the magnet of the switch 75, thus opening circuits'98 and ing the brake 33, and energizing the magnetin switch 77. Switch 77 at once closes circuit 101, cau-sing the magnet 87 to throw in the clutch 90 and start tli'epunching mechanism. As'the punch head 73 moves downwardly the pin or trip 95 wipes past the arml 94, which remains 1n contact with the portion 92 of the plate 91,and springs back to its normal position after the pin 95 has passed it, these parts now being in theposition shown in Fig. l2. Upon the upward movement of the punchhead, and after it has cleared the work, the pin 95 pulls the.
arm 94 upwardly and outof contact with the portion 92 of the plate 91, thus opening circuit 97 long enough to vallow the magnets in the switches 78 and 79 to release their armatures, thus opening circuit 99. This' causes switch 75 to close circuit 98, throwing in the clutch 31, starting the motor 29, and causing switch 7 G to open circuit 100. This in turn releases the brake 33 and permits f switch 77 to open circuit 101, thus releasing the clutch 90 and stopping the punching mechanism. By this time the pin 95 in its upward movement has cleared the arm 94, which'has sprung back to its normal position in contact with the portion 92 of the plate 91, thus tending to close circuit 97. I'n the meantime, however, thepattern carriage has moved slightly forward, carrying the opening in the pattern away from the contact pin 45 and thus opening the circuit 97 at this point. It .will be observed however that the parts are left in such position as to cause circuit 97 to be immediately closed as soon as thel contact pin 45 encounters another hole in the pattern. The above operation is repeated whenever a hole in the Vpattern is encountered, until the desired number of holes has been punched.' The operator now raises the arm 40, reverses the switch 67 and allows the carriages to lie-runA back to their original positions, after which the main switch 66 is opened to stop the machine and release the work.
While I, in order that my invention may be more readily understood, have chosen to illustrate and describe the same as embodied in av particular construction, I wish it to be distinctly understoodthat I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown, it being obviousv that Inany changes might be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. It will also b e obvious'that instead of the punching mechanism] herem shown and described, suitable cutting, marking, or other mechanism might be employed, and that my invention would be equally useful with such mechanism. v
Preferably, and as'shown lin Fig. 13, the punching or other mechanism, indicated generically in the said figure bythe numeral, 122, will be provided with a graduated scale 120 adapted to cooperate with a pointer or indicator 121 carrled by the carriage 21. The graduations on the scale120 are of such a character as will indicate the relative posi tion of the punching mechanism and the car` r1age`21, as the' latter is moved along the tracks 19, as heretofore described. With this constructionthe parts may be readily adjusted to bring the line of holes punched at any desired distance fromI the edge of the Work. l
Having described my invention and set forth it-s merits, what I claim is 1. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a pattern or templet and means for feeding the same, of an electric circuit, means in said circuit for stopping said lfeeding means when said cirf cuit is closed, and means controlled by said pat-tern for closing said circuit, substantially as described.

In a machine of the character described, the combination with work feeding means, an electric motor, and a clutch for connecting said feeding means and said motor, of an electric circuit, automatic means for closing said circuit, an electrically op erated switch controlled by said circuit, and a second circuit controlled by said switch and including said motor and clutch, Whereby when said first named circuit is closed said motor is stopped and said clutch released substantially as described.
57. In a machine of the character described, the combination with punching mechanism and controlling mechanism therefor, of means controlled by said controlling mechanism for stopping said controlling mechanism a-nd vfor starting said punching mechanism, and means controlled by said punchingl mechanism for starting said controlling mechanism and for stoppin said punching mechanism, substantial y as described.

In a machine of the character described, the combination with a pattern or templet, punching mechanism, and a clutch for stopping and starting said punching mechanism, of means controlled by said pattern or templet for throwing in said clutch, and means controlled by said punching mechanism for causing said clutch to be released, substantially, as described.
59. In a machine of the character described, the combination with an electrically controlled work feeding carriage, of a magnet 'for holding the work on said carriage, substantiall as described.
60. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a Work support, of means for feeding the Workv over said Work support, and an electro-magnet for causing said Work to move in unison with said feeding means, substantially as described.
G1. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a Work support, of a Work feeding carriage adjacent said Work support, and a magnet on said carriage, substantially as described.
62. In a machine of the character described, the combination With a Work support,l of a Work feeding carriage adjaceigt said Work support, and a plurality of magnets on said carriage, some of said magnets being arranged horizontally7 and some vertically, substantially as described.

In machines of the character specified, the combination of templet and Work supports, mechanism arranged to move the templet and Work in unison on the supports, the templet moving slower than the Work, an index pin coperating With the temp'let, a tool acting on the work, and tool actuating mechanism controlled by the index pin.

In machines of the character specified, the combination of templet and Work supports, mechanism arranged to move the temlet and Work in unison on said supports, an index pin coperating with the templet, a tool acting on the Work, an electric circuit controlled by the index pin, and tool actuating mechanism controlled by said circuit.
65. In machines of the character specified, the combination of templet and Work moving mechanism operating in unison; an index pin coperating With the templet, a tool acting on the Work, and means controlled by the index pin for stopping the templet and work moving mechanisms.

In machines of the character specified, the lcombination of templet and Work moving mechanisms operating in unison, an index pin coperating With the templet, a tool acting on the Work, an electric circuit controlled by the index pin, and means controlled by said circuit for stopping the templet and Work moving mechanisms.v

In machines of the character specied, the combination of templet and Work moving mechanisms operating in unison, van index pin coperatin with the templet, a tool acting on the Wor tool actuating mechanism controlled by the index pin, and means also controlled by the index pin for stopping the templet and work moving mechanisms.
