Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 27, 1912.
Application filed December 6, 1911. Serial No. 664,264.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that we, BERNARD S. DOYLE and ALFRED S. PATToN,citizens of the United States, residing at Lebam, in the county of Pacific and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention has for its primary object the provision of novel mechanism of the above type capable of being operated by a comparatively slight fall of water.
A further object resides in the provision of a construction wherein pump mechanism is connected to be operated in a novel manner.
Other objects will be set forth as our description progresses and those features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts on which we desire protection,
succinctly defined in our annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout: Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through the working chamber. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan, illustrating more particularly one of the working chambers and its valved connection with the water supply fiume.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 indicates vertical chambers in which pistons 2 are mounted to reciprocate, the latter having their stems 2 slidably engaged in suitable guides 3 and pivotally connected by links 4 with the adjacent end portions of a walking beam 5, fulcrumed at 6 on a suitable standard 7 Reference numeral 8 indicates a reservoir or well into which the lower end portions of chambers 1 open, the points of communica tion being below the overflow ports 9 of said reservoir, whereby pistons 2 after passing outlet ports 1, will havethe remaining portions of their downward strokes cushioned by the air confined between the piston and the body of water in the reservoir or well 8.
In the present embodiment of our invention, provision is made for the utilization of the power generated to lift water, as for irrigation purposes. This mechanism "comprises pumps 16, fixed to the upper wall of reservoir 8 and having their vvalved lower end portions projecting into the latter.
The pump pistons 19, which are of the valved type, have their stems 19 connected by links 20 with walking beam 5 on opposite sides of fulcrum 6. I
The supplying of reservoir or well 8 from chambers 1, as hereinbefore set forth, renders the apparatus more economical with respect to the use of the water as is apparent.
In the operation of our invention pistons 2 move downwardly, in an alternate manner," under the weight of the water in the upper portions of chambers 1, the imposed Weight increasing during downward movement of the piston until the piston reaches or ap proximately reaches the outlet port 1 of the cylinder, at which time the valve 13 of the related inlet port 1 willbe closed, as hereinbefore set forth.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is
1. In apparatus of the character described, a delivery head, spaced vertically arranged chambers provided in their upper end portions with inlet ports connected with said delivery head, slide valves controlling the inlet ports of said chambers, means connecting said valves for simultaneous movement, said chambers being provided in their lower end portions with outlet ports, pistons slidably fitting in said chambers, a walking beam, means connecting said pistons each with a respective end portion of said walking beam, a pair of pumps having reciprocatory pistons, link connections between the stems of the pistons of said pumps and said walking beam, pivotally supported valve actuating means connected with said first named means, and abutment means movable with said stems for swinging said valve actuating means.

In apparatus of the character described, spaced vertically arranged chambers, provided in their upper port-ions with inlet ports and in their lower portions with outlet ports, a reservoir into which the lower ends of said chambers open, the outlet ports being disposed above the lower ends of said chambers and connected to discharge into said reservoir, pistons supported in said cylinders for movement past the said outlet BERNARD S.
