The invention is a lnethod ot forming a flange upon a pipe, sheathing, rod or other elongated body of dnetile nietal having` the quality ot integrally uniting' hy pressure when cold such as lead-whieh flange, among other speeial purposes, may serve as .nieans for closing a joint between the pipe, shaithing or rod and any object receiving the saine, or through which the saine niay pass.

My method is herein illustrated hy the formation ot' a lead tlangeonthelead sheathing; A ot' an electrical line conductor B, provided with the usual insulating,r envelop (l. It is, oit course, to he understood, that any other elongated body ot ductile metal having' the quality of integrally uniting by pressure when cold-such as a lead pipepis within iny invention. ln order to forni the flange, l insert the conductor ll through an opening' in a hlock D, in which is a cavity ll, the depth and diameter ot' which may de terniine the sine ot the flange. then place in the bottoni ot the cavity a quantity ot' lead` lilauieiits F of the saine inetal-coinn'ionl y known as lead floss-aud hy means of a tapered tool G, l force the tloss innnediately adjacent to the lead sheathing into ephesion therewith, so that the consolidated floss and the sheathing heeoine practically integral. I then, with a wider nosed tool H, consolidate the floss elsewhere in the cavity, as shown in Fig 2. As soon as one layer' ot loss thus caused to cohere and unite integrally with the sheathing and is consolidated, l introduce another layer into the cavity and repeat the operation, and thus continue adding' successive layers until the flange is completed.
