To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN STnUMrr, a subject of the King of Prussia, and resident of 185 Oranienstrasse, Berlin, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fountains, more particularly of the smaller type intended for household and ornamental purposes and of the type in which a column of liquid is forced into a jet tube by means of a'falling weight.
According to the present invention the liquid is contained in a vertical cylindrical vessel having a central uptake pipe which extends to the bottom of the vessel and is provided with a jet nozzle. The water is forced into the jet tube by means of a weighted piston sliding in the cylindrical vessel and adapted to be raised by pulley block and tackle, the water ejected being collected and returned to the cylindrical vessel above the piston and passing through a suitable valve therein on the piston being raised. A suitable gasketpacking is provided between the piston and the cylindrical vessel and between the valve and the uptake pipe.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawing, which shows by way of example the preferred method of carrying out the invention.
a is a cylindrical vessel mounted on a suitable ornamental base 6 and carrying a collecting dish 0, and adapted to slide within the cylindrical vessel 60 is a weighted piston cl preferably of a heavy metal; this piston sliding over an uptake pipe 0 extending to the bottom of the vessel and perforated at its lower end at f and provided at its upper end with a suitable form of jet nozzle g which is preferably removable. The piston d is adapted to be raised and lowered by means of pulley block and tackle comprising a winding drum h .rotatably mounted on the uptake e and in fixed connection with a sleeve 2' also rotatable on the uptake pipe 6 and provided with a squared part upon which may be fitted a crank handle is. The winding drum h is supported in position between a plate Z secured to the dish 0 and preferably curved as shown on the drawings and between a square bracket in also secured to the dish 0. Passing around the winding drum 71 and having one end secured thereto is a cord 22 preferably of silk; this cord a passing over a pulley 0 carried by the plate Z and passing therefrom to one of a pair of pulleys p and 31" carried by the piston d. The cord 41. passes from the pulley p to a pulley q, and from there returns to the pulley p and is secured at its other end to the plate Z. It will thus be seen that on rotating the crank handle 70 the piston d will be raised by means of the pulley block and tackle.
The liquid ejected from the jet nozzle 9 collects in the dish 0 and returns to the cylinder at through a central hole 9" in-the plate Z to the upper part of the piston. The piston (Z is provided with a check-valve 8 having a gasket sleeve fitting over the uptake pipe 6, the check-valve a being con tained in a recess u in the lower part of the piston (Z and being normally held against its valve seat by means of a spring '2) hearing against the valve 8 at one end and at its other end against a transverse plate w secured to the piston 05 and perforated for the passage of the uptake pipe 6. Itwill thus be seen that on the piston (Z being raised the water above the same and which passes through a central bore a; in the piston bears against the valve 8 and opens the same against the action of the spring 4), so that the water from above the piston may pass through the piston to the lower part of the cylindrical vessel a and on the piston (Z being raised and released the latter will fall by its own weight and the check valve 5 automatically close, the piston d thereupon forcing the liquid in the lower part of the cylinder (.1 through the perforations f into the uptake pipe 6.
In order to form a tight joint between the piston (l and cylinder a the piston is provided with a leather or other suitable gasket ring y pressed against the sides of the cylinder (4 by means of a split ring 2. The gasket ring 3/ may be held in place by means of a metal plate Z secured by means of screws 2 to the piston d, said plate also carrying the sheaves for the pulleys p p, which are preferably arranged a short distance apart so as to permit of a passage of the liquid between them to the central bore The pulley block and tackle pr ferably concealed by means of a cap 3 secured to the said pulleys.

In combination with'a fountain having a cylindrical liquid reservoir, an axially arrangeduptake pipe opening into the bottom of said reservoir, and a piston adapted to slide in said reservoir and to fall by its own weight; winding gear for raising the piston comprising a winding drum rotatably mounted on said axial uptake pipe, and pulleyblocks and tackle adapted to be actuated on rotating said winding drum.

In comblnation with a fountain having a cylindrical liquid reservoir, an axially arranged uptake pipe opening into the bottom of said reservoir, and a piston adapted to slide in said reservoir and to fall by its own weight; Winding gear for raising the piston comprising a winding drum rotatably mounted on said axial uptake pipe, pulleys carried by the piston, pulleys n1ounted on said reservoir, and tackle secured at one end to the winding drum and at its other end to a fixed part, said tackle passing over 3. 4. In combination with a fountain having a cylindrical llquld reservoir, an axially ar-,
ranged uptake pipe opening into the bottom of said reservoir, a piston having a central bore, said piston belng adapted to slide in said reservoir and to fall by its own weight,
when the pistonafalls, and to open said bore when the piston'is raised, and packing between said valve and uptake pipe and carried by said valve.
