Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. Sitrrir, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bridgepofi, in the county of Fairtield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Band- Brakes, of which the following is a speciticatiou. I
This invention relates to hand brakes and has for its object to provide a brake of the class specified of high etliciency, of simple c nstruction and equally operable in either direction.
To these ends my improvements comprise parts and combinations of parts illustrated in their n'eferred form in the accompanying drawings whereinl ic'ure 1 is a side elevation of my improved brake. Fig. 2 is a plan view and Pig. 3 is a'sectional -end elevation online 3, 3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of arrow 1. llig. 4 is an end elevation of a portion of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of arrow 4;. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hand portion of my brake unwrapped and laid tiat. Fig. (3 is a side elevation similar to Fig. 1 and illustrating a modification of my improvements.

For convenience of illustration l have shown my improvements applied to an .au-
tomobile type of vehicle, wherein supporting frame 2 of the machine has bearing for the rotation therein of axle (3. Brake cyl inder 7 is fixed to axle (S for rotation therewith. lvrappcd about said cylinder 7 is brake hand 8 comprising a relativelyshort middle portion 9 and two portions l0, 11v extending circl'u'uferentially therefrom in opposite directions (Fig. 13), Said middle portion 9 is of full-width or apl'iroximatcly of the width of cylinder 7 while portions 10, 11. are of half-width and are widthwise oppositely disposed relatively to said middle portion 9. so that when said band 8 (Fig. is wrapped around cylinder 7, ends 12. 1?) of portions 10, 11 respectively, approxr mately meet said middle portion 9 and said band substantially twice encircles said cylinder and covers .substantially all the face thercol Haid middle portion 9 is provided with :ar l t riveted thereto at 15, 15 and ends l2, l3 of portions 10, ll have cars l6, l7 riveted thereto, all respectively. Said ear ll is connected to car 18 of frame 2 by bolt 19 and slotted at 20 to permit move ment of said car 14- and hand 8 radially of axis (3 butv not eircumferentially thereof. Frame '2 is provided with ears Q1. 22 in which are pivotally mounted at 34, 35 one end of levers Q 3, 24; all respectively. The other ends of said levers are connected by links 25. 26 to opposite ends of rock lever 27, all respectively. Said rock lever 27 is fixed to shaft .28 mounted in bearing 29 in the outer end of car 18. To the outer end of said shaft 28 is fixed arm 30 connected at its outer end with the usual pull rod 31. Ears 16, 17 are connected by links 32, 33 to levers 23, it near pivots 34, 35 all respectively. Dian'ietrally opposite middleportion 0 (Figs. 1 and 4) half-width portions 10, ll are provided with means for circumferentially freeing band 8 from cylinder 7. (3 and 7 may be em ployed. While my improvements are particularly adapted for vehicle brakes, as for instance for automobiles, they are obviously adopted for transniisison means and it will be ohvious to those skilled in the art that my improvements may be modified in inuny Ways and applied to other ends than those illustrated all Within the spirit and. scope of my invention.

What I do claim is:

urging one'portion of said band in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the cylinder and means for urging the other portion of said band in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of. said cylinder when that cylinder is rotating in a direction opposite to the first mentioned direction.
9. A hand brake including in combination, a supporting frame, a cylinder mounted for rotation relative thereto, a flexible band about said cylinder, means for drawing the ends of said band circumferentially toward each other comprising opposite levers fulcrumed in said frame, a rock lever pivoted midway its length in said frame between said opposite levers, links connecting the free ends of said opposite levers with the ends of the rock lever, and links connecting said opposite levers with the ends of said band. a
10. A hand brake including in combination, a supporting frame, a cylinder mounted for rotation relative thereto, a flexible band about said cylinder, means for drawing the ends of said band circumferentially toward each other comprising opposite levers fulcrumed in said frame, a rock lever pivoted midway its length in said frame between said opposlte levers, links connecting the free ends of said opposite levers with the ends of the rock lever, links connecting said opposite levers with the ends of said band, and means for adjusting the lengths, respectively, of one pair of links.
11. A hand brake including in combination, a supporting frame, a cylinder mounted for rotation relative thereto, a flexible band about said cylinder comprising a relatively short middle portion of full-Width and two widthwise oppositely disposed half-width portions extending circumferentially in opposite directions, respectively, from said middle portion to an approximate meeting with said middle portion, means for drawing the ends of said half-width portions circumferentially toward each other comprising opposite levers fulcrumcd in said frame, a rock lever pivoted midway its length in said frame between said opposite levers, links connecting the free (lids of said oppo site levers with the ends of said rock lever, and links connecting said opposite levers with the ends of said half-width portions.
12. A hand brake including in combination, a supporting frame, a cylinder mounted for rotation relative thereto, a flexible l about said cylinder comprising a IQlYttlVt short middle portion of full width and two widthwise oppositely disposed half-width portions extending circumferentially in opposite directions, respectively, from said middle portion to an approximate meeting w1th said middle portion, means for drawing the ends of said half-width portions circumfercntially toward each other comprising opposite levers fulcrumed in said frame,
a rock lever pivoted midway its length in said frame between said opposite levels, links conncting the free ends of said opposite levers with the ends of said rock lever, links connecting said opposite levers with the ends of said half-width portions, and means for holding .the middle portion of said band against rotation relative to said frame. A band brake including in combination, a supporting frame, a cylinder mounted for rotation relative thereto, a flexible band about said cylinder comprising a relatively short middle portion of full-width and two widthwise oppositely disposed half-width portions extending circumferentially in opposite directions, respectively, from said middle portion to an approximate meeting with said middle portion, means for drawing the ends of said half-width portions circumferentially toward each other comprising opposite levers fulcrumed in said frame, a rock lever pivoted midway its length in said frame between said opposite levers, links connecting the free ends of said opposite levers with the ends of-said rock lever, links connecting said opposite lovers with the ends of said half-width portions and. means for adjusting the lengths, respectively, of one pair of links.
