Be 1t known that I, EMIL J. F. QUIRIN, a
citizen of the United States, resident of Tioga Center, in the county of Tioga and State of 4New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Leather-Staking Machines; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactl description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the invention, referencebeing had to the accompanyin drawings, and toletters or figures of re forma part of this. specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of my machine with the adjusted .portion of the parts shown in dot-tedlin'es. Fig. 2 is a' plan View of the invention.
The invention. has relation to leather staking machines for stretching and softening leather, and is designed to .providea practical and efficient l,Inachineoperating upon a rotary rinciple.
The invention consists inthe novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth. p
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating .the invention, the numeral, 1 designates the supporting frame of the machine, carry- -iug at its upper forward-end a rotary shaft 2, and aboveand somewhat in rear of the Same a second rot-ary shaft 3., lThe lower rotary shaft 2 is; provided with a wheel 4, carrying a plurality of radial-staking blades 5, of steel or other suitable materiah'said blades in the rotation ofthe wheel projecting through a slot 6 in a platform or table '7. plurality of staking rollers 10, similar in numberto and located within the intervals 11 between the staking blades, said rollers being covered with felt or other suitable maferial. The front edge of the leather being worked may be held by the workinans hands or by his chest against the forward edge of the table at 12, and as the two wheels are rotated, a lever, preferably a treadle lever, 13v is operated to press each blade against its roller to a degree depending upon the ressure exerted upon the treadle, by means liereinafter described. Means are provided for rotating the upper shaft and its roller-carrying wheel, consisting preferably of wheels or cranks 14 at each side of the machine and connecting erene marked thereon, which 'of the chain,

against which the leather is rods 15, the rear wheels or cranks being located upon a power shaft lhaving tight and loose pulleys 17; and means are -provided for rotating the lower shaftv and. its blade-carrying wheel, consisting .preferably of a chain 18 passing over a sprocket 19 upon the-shaft 2, and over sprocket 20 carried by a shaft 21 at the rear end of the machine, just below the power shaft,'with which it has a gear connectionat 22.
The pressure-applying means referred to consists preferably of a rollei` 23, ,at onevend of a crank arm 2li, u-pon the treadle shaft 25,
said roller inthe operation of the lever orl trea'dle pressing down upon the chain Aand causing the blade-carrying wheel to turn toward the roller-carrying wheel, to impart the necessary pressure. At the same time, means are provided in connection with the pressure wheel to exert a tension upon the chain and insure that it is tight, for a proper operation of the pressure wheel this means consisting preferably of a roller'26, at the end of an arm 27, said arm having a rod 2S, slidably engaging a perforation 29, thereof and provided with a spring 30, surrounding the saine and bearing at one end against said arm and at its other end against a collar 3l, of said rod, which is connected at its lower end to the frame at 31. The roller 26, is in contact with the inner face of the lower half Vand as the pressure is applied upon the chain for the purpose stated, the Aagainst the ltension of lthe spring, and be returned to normal position by the spring when the pressure is'released.
My rotary machine is of simple, durable and compactnature, capable of being easily operated, and will effectually perform the functions for which it is intended.
Having thus described in v invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a leather staking-machine, a bearing designed to be pressed at oneend to retain it in position, and rotary means for simultaneously sci-ap- `ing and stretching the leather, including a wheel having a plurality of staking blades projecting therefrom at intervals, and a sec# ond wheel carrying a plurality of staking rollers, said rollers and said blades having intermeshing engagement with each other.
2. In a leather staking machine, a bearing against which the leather is designed to be pressed atone end to retain it in position', and rotary means for simultaneously scraping and stretching the leather, including a wheel having a plurality ofl staking blades projecting therefrom at intervals, and a second wheel carrying a plurality of staking rollers, said rollers and said blades having interineshing engagement with each other, a positive crank drive for said second wheel, and a chain drive for the blade-carrying wheel, and means acting upon said chain to press a-roller and a blade together.
3. In a leather staking machine, a bearing againstwhich the leather is designed Yto be. pressed at one end to'retain it in position, and rotary means for simultaneously scraping and stretching the leather, including a Wheel having a plurality of staking blades projecting therefrom at intervals, and a second Wheel carrying aplurality of staking rollers, said rollers and said blades having intermeshing engagement with each other, a positive crank drive for said second wheel, and a chain drive for the blade-carrying Wheel, and means acting' upon said chain to press a roller and a blade together, including' a guide roller in the path of the chain to cause it to take,4 afi crooked path, lever operated means for pressing down on said guide roller and the Iupper half of the chain, and a tension device for said chain.
' 4. In a rotaryleather staking machine, a wheel, a plurality of staking blades having projection from said wheel at regular intervals, a-second'wheel, a plurality of rollers carried byfand located at regular intervalsl upon said second wheel, said rollers and said blades having intermeshing engagement with each other, means for rotating the two wheels at the same rateof speed, and lever operated means for pressing the rollers and the blades together.
5. In a rotary leather staking machine, a
Wheel, a plurality of sta-king blades having projection from said wheel at regular intervals, a second wheel, a plurality of rollers carried by and located at regular intervals upon said second wheel, said rollers and said blades having intermeshing engagement with 'each other, me'ans for rotating the two Wheels at the same rate of speed, and lever operated means for turning the blade-carrying Wheel to press the rollers and the blades together.
6. In a rotary leather staking machine, a wheel, a plurality of staking blades having projection from said wheel at regular intervals, a second wheel, a plurality of rollers carried by and located at regular intervals upon said second'wheel, said rollers and said blades having intermeshing engagement With each other, means for rotating the two wheels at the same rate of speed, including` a chain and sprocket gearing, and lever operated means for exerting pressure upon Asaid chain to press the rollers and the blades toether.
