SUSPENSION DEVICE FOR LAMP-SHADES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERBERT M. DAooET'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspension Devices for Lamp-Shades, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices for suspending the shades of gas or electric lamps to a depending support. such as a gas pipe or a pipe carrying electric wires. It is customary to attach said depending support to an outletbox placed in the ceiling and connected either with the gas pipe or the electric conduit. The outlet box is very often placed so that its plane is not absolutely arallel with the plane of the ceiling and in such case the depending gas or electric conduit pipe is not absolutely vertical. It a lamp shade of large diameter is suspended by such depending support which is out tv plumb, the plane of the base of the shade will not be parallel with the ceiling. Heretufore it hasbccn custoi'nary when the depending support is out of plumb, to twist or bend the metal parts of the shade so that the plane of its base will be parallel with the ceiling, but this procedure frequently results in cracking the glass held by such metal parts.

It is therefore the object of the present invention to provide an adjustable suspension device whereby the lamp shade may be placed in its proper position without re moving the same from the suspending means or the suspending means from the depending support, even although such support is .ut. of. plumb.

It will be understood, however, that my invention is not limited to gas lamps and that in the case of electric lamps 1 would represent the usual pipe carrying the electric conductors. Secured in any suitable manner to the lower part of the support 1 is a bracket 3, from the arms of which hang the shade-suspending means herein shown as the chains 11. In the present instancethe shade consists of the metal frame-work 4 and the glass panels The adjustable suspending means are attached to the upper portion of the metallic framework herein 'shown as the outwardly flaring portion 6. One form of adjustable suspension device consists of the sleeve 7 soldered to the lamp-shade frame and inclosing the shank 8 of the suspending book 9. The adjusting nut is threaded on the lower end of the shank and the book 9 engages the suspending chains 11. Itwill be obvious that by the simple expedient of adjusting the nuts 10 and without removing the lamp shade from the chains or the chains from the bracket 3, said shade may be given its proper position even although the support 1 is out of plumb.

In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4; the shank of the suspending hook passes through holes in the upturned ends 13 of the bracket 12, which in turn is secured by soldering or otherwise to the flared portion 6 of the lamp shade. I

It will be apparent that various other modifications may hit made in the specific forms of adjustable suspending devices shown in the drawings without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim:

1. In a device of the character described, a lamp shade, a gas pipe, chains secured to said gas pipe for suspending said shade from said pipe, and adjustable means for attaching said shade to said chains whereby the. position of said shade may be adjusted without removing said chains from said gas 1 e. i p In a device of the character described, a lamp shade, a sleeve secured thereto, a suspending hook having its shank passing through said sleeve, and a nut threaded on the lower end of said shank.
