ATHLETIC PUTTING-SHOT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL C. MURPHY, citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Athletic Putting-Shots, of which the following is a specification.

It is the object of my invention to provide a putting shot of the required weight but of small diameter, which will not be subject to chipping or bruising, the said shot consisting broadly of a lead ball within a shell of iron or steel which will resist the wear and shock to which such implements are subjected, the lead furnishing approximately the entire weight necessary and the iron shell the durable shockand wearresisting covering therefor. Heretofore, so far as I am aware, these shots have been made of a solid ball of iron or a solid ball of lead from twelve to sixteen pounds in weight. It is desirable to get the weight in as small a compass or diameter as possible, and hence the shot composed of lead has heretofore been preferred. These shots, however, must be maintained of accurate weight, but this is not possible with a lead shot, for in use the lead shot is apt to become chipped or damaged to an extent where it shows a loss in weight, and if the shot putter uses such an implement of this kind in any event, he will be disqualified if, after making a record, the shot is weighed and found wanting in this particular, and this may occur also even if the shot, when thrown, is of full weight, but because of chipping when it strikes, weight is lost.

In carrying out my invent-ion I aim to provide a shot of compact form composed mainly of lead, protected by a shock re-. sisting shell composed preferably of iron. In making the shot a hollow iron sphere is employed having an opening at one point through which hot lead may be poured. The iron shell is in the form of a casting, and has on its interior a number of teeth or spikes projecting radially inward, and about these spikes the lead filling is molded so that the spikes will engage the same and thereby prevent the lead interior from shift- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing or moving in relation to the iron shell. I do not limit myself, however, to having these spikes projecting radially, as it is simply necessary for them to project inwardly in relation to the iron shell so as to engage the lead filling and hold the same agalnst movement.

In the accompanying drawing, I show a sectional View through a putting shot of the character described, in which 1 is the iron shell, 2 the lead filling, 3 the inwardly projecting spike or spikes, and 4: the opening through which the lead is poured.

While I have described my invention in connection with a putting shot, I do not limit myself in this respect, as the invention may be embodied in other forms of putting implements besides that of a shot, nor do I limit myself to the use of spikes on the interior of the shell, as other means may be provided to engage the lead interior to prevent shifting thereof.

In order to present a smooth exterior surface to the shot, I close the opening through which the lead or other heavy material is introduced or poured so that the surface of this plug will be flush with the exterior periphery of the ball. I prefer to effect this closing of the opening and to bring the exposed surface at this point flush with the exterior surface of the ball by pouring sufficient lead into the ball so that it will overflow at the opening, and when this cools this lead plug is filed off flush.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a putting shot or the like, a hollow shell of shockand wear-resisting material having its interior filled with a material of greater specific gravity, said shell having means on its interior to prevent shifting of the filling material, substantially as described.

2.
