Be it known that 1,'L0U1s E. YOAKIM', a citizen of the United States, residing at Yuma', in the county of Yuma and State of Arizona, have invented a new and useful Vehicle- Reach, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in reaches for vehicles or'wagons.
It has for'its object, primarily, to allow for lateral careening movement of the vehicle, or wheel axles, as. when a wheel, or wheels, may pass over an obstacle or drop into a rut or hole in the street or roadway, Without liability of twisting or splitting the reach or subject-ing the hounds to torsional strain or stress.
A further object is to greatly simplify the construction of parts and accordingly economize the cost of manufacture.
A still further object vis to carry out the aforesaid ends in an expeditious and effective manner.
l The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrab ing the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made as relate to the detailed construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit thereof, Figure 1 is a plan view-of the device. Fig. 2 is a partly sec-A tional and partly sgide view of thel same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section produced upon the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a like i section taken on the lille 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, I'construct the reach, generally designated by the character 1, of two membersv orlsections 2 and 3, respectively, the member 2 being preferably of wrought metal or steel and the member 3 being of tubular metal with an apertured flattened Iend portion 4, its aperture 4 receiving a pin for connecting it to the rear axle, neither said pin nor said axle being a transverse por ion correspondingr formation of a like transverse member 9 to form a sleeve 10, the latter transverse member being suitably bolted or riveted to the arms or branches 7 of said member 2, upon their under sides.
The sleeve 10 is adapted to receive the rear flanged end of the tubular or rod reachmember, the flange thereof engaging t-he inner' or forward edge of the sleeve to retain the' reach-member 1n position therein and yet allow of the turning or swiveling of the tubular or rod reach-member as the vehicle wheel or wheels may ride upwardly over an obstacle or may drop into a rut or hole in the road-way, and thus avoid the liability of the twisting or splitting 0f the reach or subjecting the hounds to torsional strain or stress, as would otherwise beliable to occur. The device thus provided, is extremely simple, comprising but the minimum number of parts in its organization and is inexpen-v sive of manufacture.
