NOSE-GUARD FOR EYEGLASSES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. S 'm vans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the count of Providence and State of Rhode Islan have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nose-Guards for Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to'nose guards or pieces for eyeglasses, and more particularly to those of the duplex type wherein the nose pad has a rocking movement relatively to the remainder of the nose bearin member.
The objects of my invention inc ude those commonly sought in this class of structures, and more particularly to avoid, in the means for connecting the pad with the remainder of the structure, any projections or points or prongs that would be adapted to catch upon objects; to lessen the amount of stock employed in the connecting member to concentrate the pivotal action at a single pivotal point of small dimensions; and to attain these ends in an inexpensive and simple structure.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and combina tions of arts as fall within the scope of the ap ended claims.

My invention is illustrated in conjunction with the bridge 1, a support 2, lens attaching devices 3, and lens 4 of an ordinary pair of eyeglasses upon which is the usual guard arm 6 pivotally connected with the support by a screw 8, and 0 erated by the usual 0peratin spring 9. t is in conjunction with such amiliar parts or any other construction that my invention may be used. In the present instance, the nose guard comprises a body or nose bearing portion 10, supported at an intermediate portion, such as 11, by the guard arm 6, and having its upper portion 12 bent at an angle to its remaininfg portion. The end of the portion 12 is pre erably elon steel, as at 13, and rovided with an obfimg slot 14. The pa proper 16 comprises a preferably oblong body 17, which may, if desired, have attached by rivets 18 or otherwise to its face a bearing strip 19 having a roughened or corrugate face, but the presence of the last mentioned strip is optional.
At an intermediate ortion of the rear face of the pad is an o lon block 20, having its opposite ends pre erably rounded somewhat, as at 21, and provided with rounded top shoulders upon its ends, as at 22. In the middle of the block 20 rises a post 24 ada ted to pass loosely through the slot 14 an have its end headed over to form a head 25 of sufficient diameter to overlap those portions of the part 13 which are ad acent the narrower dimensions of the opening 14. The overlapping portions of the head 25 have their rear ortions in loose contact with the rear face of the portion 13. The shoulder ortions 20 and 22 of the block 20 exten normally a slight distance into the openin 14, but not so far as to extend beyond t e plane of the rear surface of the ortion 13. This block is also somewhat s orter than the o enin 14, and the pad, as a result of the escri ed construction, is capable of a rockin movement longiltudinally of its length. The thickness of t e block 20, as shown in Fig. 6, is somewhat less than the width of the opening 14, so that there is an opportunity for a transverse movement of t e ad without danger of detachment. It will e observed that the whole pivotal action is centered upon the rear face of the head 25, and that the struc ture is such that in the rocking of the uard no portion of the shoulders 22 extcn s bevond the plane surface of the portion 13.

What I claim is,
1. In a nose uard for eyeglasses, the combination with t e nose bearing portion provided with an oblong slot, of a nose pad comprising a body, a block upon the body extending loosely into the slot, and a head upon the bod loosely overlapping the face 0 the nose earin portion ad acent the narrow portions of %he slot.
2. In a nose guard for eyeglasses, the
combination with a nose bearing portion provided with an oblong slot, of a nose pad comprising a body, an oblong block upon the body of less length than the slot and extending loosely into the slot, and a head upon the central portion of the body overlapping the face of the nose bearing portion j at each side of the slot.
3. In a nose guard for eyeglasses, the combination with a nose healing portion provided with an oblong slot, ofa nose pad comprising a body, an oblong block upon the bod I provided with rounded shoulders exten ing loosely into the slot, and a head upon the center of the body overlapping the face of the bearing portion.
4. In a nose guard for eyeglasses, thei combination with a nose bearing portion provided with an oblong slot, of a nose pad comprising a body, an oblong block upon the body longitudinally and transverselyi smaller than the slot and extending into the slot, and a head upon the body overlapping the face of the nose bearing portion 5.
