HERNIAL BANDAGE.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EnoUAnn AnAnIn-L'r'io- TARD, a citizen of the French Republic, and a resident of Paris, France, have invented certain Improvements in IIernial Bandages, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to an improved form of hernial bandage, intended more particularly for supporting inguinal, crural and scrotal hernias and which is more practical and eflicacious than bandages as hitherto constructed; this bandage comprises means for attaching the pad to the belt and for the free attachment of the spring to the pad.

The arrangement comprises the employment (1) of a belt or band (2) of one or more pads, and (3) of a spring.

Figure 1 is a general front elevation of a bandage for retaining a scrotal hernia. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a front elevation and a vertical section of the shield or upper plate of the pad. Figs. -fL and 5 show in front elevation and in plan the bar for fixing the pad to the belt. Figs. 6 and 7 show the extremity of the spring which presses upon the pad,

The belt employed presents the following features: On the front, at the place which is to cover the hernial orifices, the elastic fabric is replaced by an inextensible fabric B for an area of six to eight square centimeters. It is this inextensible part which covers either wholly or partially the pad or pads required.

The pad or pads are of the known form but their shield or upper plate is quite different and is constructed in the following manner :On the shield or upper plate a of the pad I), at the exact place at which the end of the spring a should be placed in order that by its pressure upon this part the pad 6 may be exactly applied to the hernial orifice, a series of holes (1 is arranged. It is in one of these holes (the most suitable one) that the inner pin a of the novel spring 0 which is hereinafter described, is engaged. Below the holes (l in the shield there is arranged a sort of cup as shown in Fig. 3 serving to protect the pin 6 and prevent it from being impeded in its movements by the hair or other material used for the pad.

At the upper part and a little to the side of the shield a of the pad 6 a tapped hole f is formed and in it there is engaged the screw f/ which holds the attachment bar it.

In order to fix the pad I) upon the belt A which comprises two pieces of inextensible fabric B, a small bar 71. is employed (Figs. 4 and it is arranged upon the material of the belt through which its two points 7. 7.: and its fixing screw 9 pass. In this manner the pad 7) is held inside the band at three fixed points.

The spring 0 is curved and its end portion which rests upon the pad is of novel construction. At its extremity which bears against the pad I) this spring forms two branches m, n of which m is more or less curved and forms so to speak the continuation of the spring while the other branch 'n constitutes a spur shaped part with its end directed upward. At the intersection of the two branches m, a there is fixed a stud 0 upon which the leather extension 79 of the other end of the spring is engaged. In this manner the pad Z) is held upon the hernial orifice by a pressure exerted on three points which may be considered at the three angles of a triangle the area of which is approximately equal to the external area or shield of the pad.

For inguinal hernias the end or collar of the spring may be straight or curved upward or downward without employment of the second branch N. By this method of connecting the spring with the pad b, this spring is entirely free and detachable from the belt and from the pad, so that the bandage may be fitted in two operations. In the first place the belt A is arranged around the hips after the pad 6 has been fixed inside it at an appropriate place and the belt is then tightened as desired. In the second place the detachable spring 0 is arranged on the belt, its front extremity at being placed upon the pad I) and the inner pin 6 forced into the hole in the plate a which corre sponds to the most direct pressure of the pad upon the hernial orifice.

Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 2- 1. A device of the character described having a belt, a pad provided with an apertured plate, and attaching means comprising a clip provided with an angular part engageable with the aperture of the plate and an attaching screw carried by the clip and having threaded engagement with the plate, the screw and the mentioned angular part extending from the plate through the belt and projecting to pass into the pad.

2. device of the character described havi g a belt, a pad provided with a threaded opening and spaced apertures at opposite sides thereof and attaching means comprising a clip having angular parts engageable with the spaced apertures of the plate, and an attaching screw carried by the central part of the clip andengageable with the threaded opening of the clip, a screw and the mentioned angular parts extending from the plate through the belt and project ing to pass into the pad.

3. A device of the character described having a pad adapted to contact upon the body, and a spring member having divergent resilient branches each adapted to bear upon said pad, the overlapping portions of the spring member having detachable connection with each other, the said connection and the resilient branches producing pressure at points corresponding with the three angles of a triangle.

4:. A device of the character described having a pad adapted for contact upon the body, and a spring member having divergent resilient branches each adapted to bear 7 upon the pad to press the same in position,

one of said branches having adjustable connection with the pad, the other of said branches being free.

5. A device of the character described having a pad adapted for cont-act upon the body, and provided with an apertured plate, and a spring member having divergent resilient branches each adapted to bear upon the plate to press the pad in position, one of such branches having a pin engageable with one or another of the apertures of said plate.

6. A hernial bandage comprising a belt adapted to encircle the body of the wearer, a separate member adapted to encircle the belt and having connecting means for its ends, said separate member comprising a spring, a pad detachably connected with the belt and means detachably connecting the spring with the pad.
