ELEVATOR-DOOR CONTROLLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELMER I. IVARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Elevator-Door Controller, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a mechanical apparatus by means of which the controller of an elevator car and the gates or doors controlling entrance and exit from the elevator shaft at the different floor levels, may be mechanically interlocked.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of an elevator shaft and car equipped with my invention; Fig. 2 a fragmentary elevation in partial vertical section of the essential elements of my device in posit-ion immediately before the car reaches a floor level; Fig. 3 a similar view showing the car mechanism in cooperative relation with the shaft mechanism; Fig. 4 a fragmentary plan on line 4--4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 a plan of the locking mechanism associated with the car controller; Fig. 7 a view similar to Fig. 6 with the car controller in neutral and locked condition; Fig. 8 a section on an enlarged scale on line 8-8 of Fig. 6; and Fig. 9 a section on line 99 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 10 indicates an elevator ear provided with any sort of cont-roller 11 having a movable controller lever 12. The elevator shaft is equipped with a door 13 at each floor level in the usual manner. Associated with the controller 11 (as an attachment if desired) is a locking structure comprising a casing 14 from one face of which is projected a cam 15, which, when the controller lever 12 is in its neutral po- 7, will have been engaged by said lever 12 and depressed into the casing 14, said cam being carried by the free ends of links 16 pivoted within the casing.
Mounted within casing 14 is a bell-crank lever 17 one arm of which is connected by link 18 with the lower end of one of the links 16. The other arm of lever 16 is connected by alink 19 with a sliding bar 21 mounted within casing ,14. Connected to the bar 21 is one end of a rod 22 which is projected through the end of casing 14 along the wall of the car into a casing 23 secured to the car wall near one corner. In this casing 23 I mount a bell-crank lever 24 to one arm of which rod 22 is connected. Connected to the other arm of lever 24 is a rod 25 which extends upwardly through the roof of the car and is connected to a bell-crank lever 26 mounted thereon. Lever 26 is connected by link 27 with a lever 28 carried by a vertical shaft 29 on the roof of the car. Shaft 29 carries a pair of arms 31 to the outer ends of which is secured a vertical shoe 32 having inclined ends 33.
Pivotally mounted at 35, 35 in casing 14 are two oppositely projecting locking dogs 36, 36 which lie normally out of the path of movement of the controller lever 12 but are adapted to be projected, as shown in Fig. 7, so as to hold lever 12 in neutral position. Connected to each locking dog 36 is a toggle lever 37 and the two toggle levers are connected by a link 38 which, in turn, is connected to a rod 39 projected from casing 14 along the car wall substantially parallel with rod 32 into casing 23 where it is connected to one arm of a bell-crank lever 40. The other arm of lever 40 is connected to a rod 41 which extends upwardly through the roof of the car and is connected at its upper end to one arm of bell-crank lever 42, the other arm of said lever being connected by a link 43 with a lever 44 carried by a vertical shaft 45 adjacent shaft 29. Shaft 45 is provided with a pair of arms 46 which, at their outer ends, carry a vertically arranged shoe 47 having inclined ends 48, the shoe 47 lying beyond the side of the car 10 alongside shoe 32.
Each shaft door 13 is slidably or otherwise movably mounted in any suitable manner and is provided with a locking head 51 adapted to be engaged in such way as to prevent movement from the normal closed position of the door. Arranged adjacent the normal position of the head 51 is a casing 52 in which is pivotally mounted a swinging latch 53 adapted to engage the head 51 so as to prevent opening movement of the door. Connected to catch 53 is a rod 54 which is connected to a lever 55 pivoted at 56 in the elevator shaft and carrying a roller 57 adapted to be engaged by the shoe 32. Pivotally mounted in casing 52 is a cam 58 normally lying projected from the casing and formed to be engaged by a pin 59 on the door 13 at the initial end of its opening movement. Secured to cam 58 is a rod 60 which is connected to a lever 61 pivoted at 62 in the elevator shaft and carrying a roller 63 adapted to be engaged by the shoe 47, the arrangement of the two rollers 57 and 63 being such that the two shoes 32 and 47 will travel between the rollers. Pivoted at 71 in casing 52 is a catch 72 (see dotted lines, Figs. 2 and 3) which is provided with a shoulder 7 3 adapted to engage a shoulder 74 formed on rod 60 when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3. The catch 73 is provided with an extension 75 arranged to be engaged by the pin 59 which engages cam 58.
The operation is as follows: Supposing the elevator car to be moving upwardly as indicated by the arrows in Figs. 1 and 2, the two shoes 32 and 47 will be projected between the rollers 57 and- 63, just as the car reaches the adjacent floor, without moving either of said rollers but to bring the car to a stop, the operator must move the controller lever 12 from the position indicated in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 7, thus operating upon the cam 15 which, acting upon link 18, lever 17, link 19, bar 21, rod 22, lever 24:, rod 25, lever 26, link 27, lever 28, shaft 29, and arms 31, will shift the shoe 32 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3, thus acting upon roller 57 and lever 55 to withdraw catch 53 from the head 51 of the door 13. Until this occurs, there can be no movement of the door 13. As the door 13 is started on this opening movement, its pin 59 will engage cam 58 so as to throw said cam to the position shown in Fig. 3, where it will be locked by catch 72. The movement of cam 58 drives roller 63 into engagement with shoe 4C7 which swings on its shaft 15 and projects the locking dogs 36 to the position shown in Fig. 7, where movement of the controller lever 12 in either direction is prevented. This locked condition of the controller lever 12 is maintained until door 13 is returned to its closed position and pin 59 engages the catch extension 75 so as to withdraw shoulder 73 from shoulder 741; and thus permit cam, 58 to drop to its normal position and withdraw roller 63 from shoe 57 so as to permit a return of the locking dogs 36 to normal position.
It will be seen from the above that no door 13 can be opened until the elevator car has been brought to a stop opposite the same, and that the car cannot be started in either direction from a position opposite any door 13 until that door has been completely closed.
I claim as my invention:
1. An elevator safety appliance comprising a controller on the car, locking means for limiting the movement of the controller operating member, a movable member arranged in the path of movement of the controller operating member, a pair of independently movable shoes mounted on the car, connections between one of said shoes and the locking means of the controller member, connections between the other of said shoes and the movable member in the path of the controller operating member, two levers mounted in the elevator shaft in position to be respectively engaged by the car shoes, a door catch mounted in the ele 'vator shaft, a shaft door member to be engaged by said catch, connections between said door catch and one of the levers, a cam mounted in the shaft in position to be engaged by the shaft door member in the initial opening movement of the door, oonnections between said cam and the other of said shaft levers, a catch for holding said cam 'out of normal position, and means serving to withdraw said catch from the cam at the end of the closing movement of the shaft door.
2. An elevator safety appliance comprising a controller on the car, locking means for limiting the movement of the controller operating member, a movable member arranged in the path of movement of the controller operating member, a pair of independently movable shoes mounted on the car, connections between one of said shoes and the locking means of the controller member, connections between the other of said shoes and the movable member in the path of the controller operating member, two levers mounted in the elevator shaft in position to be respectively engaged by the car shoes, a door catch mounted in the.
elevator shaft, a shaft door member to be engaged by said catch, connections between said door catch and oneof the levers, a cam mounted in the shaft in position to be positively operated by the shaft door member in the initial opening movement of the door, and connections between said cam and the other of said shaft levers.
