This invention relates to improvements in the valve gear for rotary absorption dynamometers in which a turbine or rotor revolves within a casing suitably mounted on friction rollers and connected to a water supply to enable the casing to run full of water when the machine is in use.
I It has been proposed to connect the inlet and outlet valve levers by links and to opmovement of which isvery slow.
ilhis invention is designed to provide a valve gear whereby the dynamometer may be employed for indicating horse powers considerably above or below its normal range on occasions when the prime moveris subjected suddenly to large overloads or underloads.
It consists in the arrangement of links and levers by which the inlet and outlet valves are operated by a single lever which can he quickly moved a considerable distance the movement of which, in one direction causes the inlet valve to be further opened and outlet valve closed'and its movement in the reverse direction causes the inlet valve to be closed and=outlet valve further opened.
Theinvention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings ;Eorming part of the 's )ecification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rotary absorption dynamometer with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of same. When the operating lever It is held in its central position on the quadrant S (as shown in Fig. 1) the valves M and I; are arranged to open and close normally so that if the machine is being used for a test it records in the usual way the power absorbed thereby. When it is desired to put on an overload the operating lever It is moved upward toward the end .9 of the quadrant S. This movement of the lever ll rotates the spindle p and with it the lever (l causing the link t) lever n, link 9 and lever in all to be moved. The 'ihovement of the lever causes the outlet valve X to he cl sed and that of the lever in causes the inlet valve -l to be opened, the amount of their respective closing and opening depending upon the extent of the movement cf the operating lever R. llhen on the other hand it is desired to reduce the load '2". 6., put on an under load the operating lever R is moved downward toward the end a of the quadrant S.
