Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN N. RUFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the co-unty of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calorie Engines; and I do hereby declare the tollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in caloric engines, and more particularly plo the means employed for generating the eat.
The object of the invention is to provide a horizontally disposed caloric engine with a cook stove or range, having certain characteristics, whereby I am enabled to provide economical power for domestic purposes for running small plants etc.
The invention also relates to the specific details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a section on the line w, af: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line y, y of Fig. 1.
Numeral 1 indicates a cook stove comprising a tire pot 2, rear 'flues 3, near the top and bottom of the lire pot, and an exit Hue 4 with which the iues 3 communicate. A side flue 5 also communicates with the tire pot 2 near the top thereof and passes around the oven 7, and performs a dual function. The flue 5 communicates with an exit flue 7, connected to the exit flue 4f by a branch flue 8. The exit flue 7 is provided with a damper 9, while the branch exit flue 8, is provided with a damper 10. The top of the casing is formed with a seat 11 which receives the flanges 12u of a cup shape casting 12, which depends in the fire pot 2, the bottom of said casting being concave-conveX to afford strength, and at the same time provide a pocket for the 'flame from the fuel in the fire pot. The bottom of the casting 12 terminates substantially mid-way between the lues 3 to insure of the flame passing around the side walls of the casting to ctl'ectually heat the air.
Mounted on the top of the casing 1, is a horizontal caloric lengine 15. This engine comprises a casing 1G formed with a vertical depending hollow portion 17, provided at its bottom with a flange 18 which is bolted to the top o1 the stove casing 1 and registers with the casting 12. The hollow portion 17 communicates with a port 19 leading to a cylinder 20 on the casing 16. Operating in the cylinder' 20 is a piston 21 connected with a piston rod, which in turn is connected with a link 22. The link is pivoted to a rocking lever 23, having pivoted thereto a link 24, connected with a Piston rod 25, extending from a piston 2G, operating in the hollow portion 17 and the cup shape casting 12. The engine is provided with the usual tly wheel, air inlet valve and other accessories which are necessary in an engine of this type, but form no part of my present invention.
When the parts are assembled as described, a fire is started in the range and the heat in passing to the lines heats the air in the cup shape casting 17, and then eX- pands the same, thereby raising piston 26, and dissipating the heated air in the port 19 and behind the piston 21, and as a consequence actuates said piston. To control the engine, the dampers 9 and 10 are operated for instance while the stove is used for baking purposes, damper 9 is opened and the damper 10 is closed, causing the ignited gases to pass to the exit flue 7 and escaping to a large degree past the cup shape casting 12. However, when the damper 10 is opened and damper 9 is closed, the ignited gases are caused to pass directly through the flues i3-3, and in so doing cont-act directly with the walls of the casting 12 and etectually heat the air therein, at which time the most effective force of the engine is obtained. By this system of dampers and the construction and location ot the cup shape casting a simple and effective means is afforded `for combining all the salient and practical features of a cook stove, as well as means for controlling the engine and at'- fording etlicient and economical means for deriving the necessary power for domestic purposes.
By constructing the cup shape casting as described, and the vertical flanged portion labor of separate fastening means, which isV vital in an apparatus of the type described. I have specifically deined a horizontally disposed caloric engine for the very obvi- Y,
ous reason that it is of the utmost importance from a standpoint of economy in space as it is my purpose to utilize my improvements for domestic purposes, obviously the importance of utilizing' all availing space is quite essential. Y
What claim is:
ln combination a caloric engine comprising a casing provided with a port and a vertical cylindrical ho-llow portion having a ilange at its' lower end, said hollow portion communicating with the port and a cylinder4 on the casing and communicating with the port, a vertically operated piston in the vertical hollow portion, a casing having a lire pot, rear fines communicating with the top and bottom: of the fire pot, an exit flue communicating' with the said rear flues, a
damper in said flue, a side flue communicating with the re pot near the top thereof, an exit flue communicating with the latter side flue, a damper in the latter exit flue, the
casing having in its to-p an opening, a cup shape casting having a iiange at its upper end and tting in the opening in the top of the casing, the bottom of the casting tert minating substantially midsway between the rear lues and below the plane of the side Hue, and means securing the flange of the vertical hollow portion of the engine casing to the top of the casing and for holding the cup shape casting in position, said vertical hollow portion, and the cup shape casting' forming a cylinder tov receive the vertical piston of the engine.
