To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J .IQENNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of .Cook' and State of Illinois, have. invented a certain new. and useful Improvement in Automatic Stokers, (Case 2,) .of which the following is 'a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formirg a part of this specificatio'n.
'My invention relates to improvements in automatic stokers, and particularly to that class known as under-feed stokers.
It is an object of my invention to construct a retort for a stoker of the class indicated in such a manner that it may be free from the usual tendency to crack, due to the excessive expansion and contraction strains occasioned by the. combustion of the fuel delivered to the fire by the retort. This I accomplish by constructing the retort that is most subjected to such strains in'a plurality of sections, and securing these sections together by means, of bolts. 4
It is a further object of my invention to construct twyer blocks of greater etliciency and less weight than heretofore in use, a result of such construction being that the air is. used more effectively, that there isa greater air opening per twyer' block, and that the air is uniformly distributed -of openings in such block. In my improved construction, the twyer blocks are made comparatively narrow, as a result of which their lifeis increased as they are protected from ashes accumulating upon them and burning them It is a further object of my invention to improve the construction of the deflector plate over the front end of the retort in such a mannerthat this deflector plate may beindependent of the means used to support the brickwork of the boiler over the front end of the retort, and to this end I employ separate means brickwork, or front pier of the boiler and proportion the retort and front twyer blocks in such manner block on each side of the retort, the deflector plate may be either inserted or removed from the rear of the front pier, and when in place requires .no

Referring to the drawings, 17 represents a boiler supported in part by the pier 16 having a usual front plate 18, in the lower part of which an opening is formed to re- C61VO the front end of the retort 8 to which the stoking mechanism is secured in front of the boiler. This mechanism consists of a ram 6, adapted to be reciprocated by suitable means as a steam cylinder 7 below the lower end of the hopper 5, as a result of which fuel deposited in the hopper 5 is fed intothe compartment25 in front of the ram 6, and bythe reciprocation of-this ram is fed into the front end of the retort 8, and as successive charges of tort 8, the fuel is fed backward and upward to a position to be consumed under the boiler 17 A push bar 12 is rigidly attached to the ram 6, as indicated, and has secured thereto the tapered blocks 13, 13, which serve to agitate the fuel and direct it upwardly. It is noticed that the portion of the retort above this di-V viding line is divided into a plurality of sections l0,10, all of which are bolted together andto the main section of the retort 8, as indicated, by which anyone of the upper sections may be readily replaced when neces-' sary. The upper faces of the sections '10, 10 are conformed to receive the twyer blocks 19 and 20, through the lugs of which bolts 21 are adapted to pass to secure such twyer blocks in position. The front pier 16 of the;boiler is supported by means of a plate orJbeam 15, preferably of cast iron, supported from the front end of the retort and isso conformed that the deflector plate 14- may be inserted beneath the front pier 16 and the beam 15 and be securely held in such position by inserting the blank twyer blocks 19. When in such position as will be seen by referring to Fig. 2, the deflector plate is in such a position that openings 14", 14 in such deflector plate register with corresponding openings in the upper flanges of the sections 10, 10, portions 14, 14 serve to hold the deflector plate 14 securely in position. This deflector plate is hollow, as in-- dic ated, and the openings 14*, 14 communicate with the holes 14: for the purpose in the combustion of the same and also to prevent gases of combustion from passing out through the chamber 25 into the hopper 5. The'top flanges of the retort are adapted to support plates 24:, 24, the outer edges of which are supported from the walls 23, 23 of the boiler setting, and these plates and walls together form an air compartment under and around the is fed by any suitable means not shown, and as a result is supplied to the deflector plate 14 through the openings already indicated.

While Ihave shown my invention in the embodiment'above described, I do not, however,limit myself to this particular construction, but desire to secure by Letters Patent any equivalent modifications that may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
-What I claim is:
1. In combination in afurnace, a retort for receiving fuel to be consumed, a beam supported by the front end of such retort and adapted to carry the Weight of the front wall of the furnace, removable twyerblocks supported by such retort, and a deflecting plate adapted to be supported by such retort over the entering fuel and under i such beam, such deflecting plate adapted to direct the fuel upward inthe retort and so conformed as to be insertible and removable from the rear of the front wall by removing the twyer blocks adjacent to such front wall.
2. A twyer block for use in an underfeed stoker consisting of an elongated hollow member open on one'of its long sides and closed on the remaining sides, there being elongated slots in one of the long sides ad'acent to the aforesaid open side, and a div1dingwallextending across the interior of saidmember in a plane transverse to the blocks so as o form separate chambers each said walls.
- 5. A twyer block for use in an underfe'ed stoker consisting of an elongated hollow member open on one of its long sides and closed on the remaining sides, there being two series of elongated openings extending lengthwise in a second long side of said member adjacent to the aforesaid side, and a dividing wall extending across the interior of said member between said series of open- 6. A twyer block for use in an underfeed stoker comprising an elongated hollow member open on one of its long sides and closed on the remaining sides, the width of the open side being less than the depth of said member measured at right angles to that side, the parts being so proportioned that the chamber within said member narrows in the transverse direction from said open side toward the side opposite thereto, and one of the sides adjacent to said open side being provided with a series of openings distributed transversely of'the same.
7. In combination, an open-topped retort having laterally projecting flanges extending outwardly from the upper edges of its side walls, said flanges having openings therethrough, a series of twyer blocks arranged end to end along said flanges, each of said twyer blocksconsisting of an elongated hollow member open only on the side overlying the adjacent flange, there being slots in the side of each of the twyer blocks facing inwardly with respect to the retort, and a dividing wall extending transversely across the interior of each of said twyer having independent outlets into the retort.
