P/ZZZi/lB i q vfllmeooeo PHIIBP BERNARD, F JEFFERSON, SOUTH DAIKO'I'J HOG-WATERER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 4, 1911. Serial No. 663,746.
Patented Aug. 13, 1912.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP BERNARD, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Jefferson, in the county of Union and State South Dakota, have invented a new and. *nsefulHog-Waterer, of which the following is a specification.
Theinvention relates to improvements in hog 'w'aterers.
, The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of hog waterers and'analogoii's stock watering devices, more especiallv the construction shown and described in Patent No. 843,925, granted to me Feb. 12,1907, and to enable an ordinary lamp to be employed. for heating the water and to provide a metallic chimney for the same having heat outlets located beneath the tank and also beneath the bottom of the exteriordrinking trough, so as to prevent the water contained within the trough from freezing in any kind of weather.
, is' 'an enlarged detail trating the arrangement of the,
With these and other objects in view, the
' invention consists in the construction, and
novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereto ap ended; it being understood that various c anges' in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, witlnn the scope of th'claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacri .ficing any of the advantages of the inventional view of the metallic chimney.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompan illustrated the pre invention, 1 desl ing drawing in which is erred embodiment of the nates an outer metallic jacket of cylindrical or other form, constructed'of galvanized sheet metal or other suitable material, and provided with a removable cover 2 of conical form, and equipped at its interior with a strainer 3 and adaptedto be removed and inverted to form structed of galvanized sheet metal, or
a funnel for fillingan interior-1y arranged tank 4:. The tank 4, which is also ttiplnsuitable material, is spaced from the top, bottom and walls of the jacket by an intervening air space, which enables the tank to be enveloped in warm air, whereby the tank is rendered easy to heat and rapid radiation of heat from the tank prevented. The tank may be supported by brackets 5, or other suitable means, suitably secured to the interior of the jacket, but other supporting means may, of course, be employed. The tank is also provided with a conical or funnel-shaped top 6, which has a central opening from which depends a filling tube 7, preferably formed of gas pipe or other tubular metal, and supported in position by a nut 8, arranged upon the top of the tank.
The top of the tank is equipped with a suitable vent 9, having a screw cap or other suitable closure adapted to close the opening of the vent after the tank has been filled. The cover 2 has a central opening and is provided with a short tube 10 of a length to extend into the filling tube when the cover is inverted for use as a funnel. The strainer 3, which preferably consists of wire gauze or woven wire, is adapted to prevent the tubes from becoming clogged.
On the exterior of the jacket is secured a trough 11, consisting of a piece of sheet metal or other suitable material, bowed or bent to form a front portion and sides, the latter being secured at their edges to the outer face of the jacket. The trough is provided with a horizontal partition 12, located at an intermediate oint between its top and bottom and in suiistantiall the lane of the bottom of the tank and 01-m- 1ng an upper drinking compartment 13 and a lower space or compartment 14, located at an opening 15 in the jacket and communicating with the interior of the latter at the space beneath the tank. The tank is connected with the trough by a short pipe or nipple l6, piercing the tank and the jacket and'suitably secured to the same. The short pipe or nipple forms an outlet for the water and is located below the upper edge of the drinking compartment of the trough, so as to b; submerged by the water within the latter, the hog watereribeing automatic in its action, water flowing through the outlet into the trough as it is consumed in the latter.
Within the lower portion ofthe jacket in the space below the tank is arranged a lamp 17, having an ordinary burner 18 and equipped with a metallic chimney 19 of approximately T-shape, consisting of a lower vertical portion and an upper horizontal portion. The lower vertical portion is clamped upon the gallery of the burner by the screw 20 thereof in the usual manner, and the horizontal top portion forms arms, extending in opposite directions from the vertical portion, and having end walls.21 provided with openings 22 of sufiicient size to produce the necessary draft and also to throw a suiiicient heat under the trough to prevent the water from freezing in all kinds of weather. One of the horizontal arms of the metallic chimney extends through the opening 15 into the lower space or compartment 14: of the trough and the outlet 22 at this end of the horizontal portion of the chimney is located beneath the horizontal portion 12, and discharges heat against the lower taceof the same, so that there is no liability of the water within the drinking compartment of the trough freezing-and interfering with the operation of the device. The other horizontal arm of the metallic chimney extends in the direction ofv the center of the bottom of the tank and discharges heat against the latter. The tank .and the mainportion of the chimney are ldcated within the space below the tank, and
there is sufficient heat to prevent the water therein from freezing. The metallic chimney is equipped at one side with an opening 23, which is covered by a plate or piece 24.
of isinglass or other transparent material, so'that the flame of the lamp will be visible from the exterior of the metallic chimney.
The lower portion of the jacket is equipped with a hinged door 25, located opposite the sight apertures 23 of the metallic chimney, and adapted to afl'ord access to the space,
below the tank for adjusting the wick oi the lamp.
Having thus fully described my invelis tion, what I claim as new and desire to cure by Letters Patent, is:
An apparatus of the class described comprising an outer jacket having an opening,
a tank located within the jacket above the said opening, an outer metallic trough mounted on the exterior of the jacket and covering the opening thereof and provided at an intermediate pointbetween its top and bottom witha horizontal partition forming an upper drinking compartment" and a lower space or compartment located at the said opening and communicating:
with the interior of the jacket, an outlet connecting the tank with the drinkingcom partment. of the trough, and a lamp located within the outer jacket below .the tank and provided with an approximately shaped metallic chimney forming opposite.
horizontal arms provided with end wall: having apertures, one of thearms extends ing through the opening of the, jacket into.
the space below the said partition with its outlet discharging beneath the samc, tho other arm being extended inwardly toward the center of the bottom of the tank with its outlet discharging beneath the latter.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my slgnature in the presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP BERNARD. Witnesses:
