WAGON-BODY COVER. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1912.
Application filed April 15, 1911. Serial No. 621,414.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
.hlwing is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in wagon body covers.
The object of the present invention isto improve the construction of wagon body covers, and to provide a simple, etlicient and comparatively inexpensive cover, designed for use on delivery wagons and adapted to present a neat and attractive appearance, and capable of protecting the contents of a wagon from dust, weather and theft.
' A further object of the invention is to provide a wagon cover of this character, adapted to be readily applied to an ordinary wagon body, and capable of being opened from either side of the same and. of exposing the entire contents thereof when opened.
Vith these andother objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim here to appended; itbeing understood that various changes in the't'orm, proportion, size without departing from the spirit or sacri-,
iicing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wagon body provided with a cover, constructed in accordance with'this invention and shown closer Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the some. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the cover supporting cross bars.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a rectangular wagon body, equipped at its front and rear portions with transverse bars 2, suitably secured between the sides of the wagon body and provided at their centers with bearing brackets 3, consisting of a lower attaching 7 portion or plate and an upper centrally arranged bearing eye 4 for the reception of a bolt 5. The bolts-5 of the frpntand rear brackets are longitudinally alined and pierce. quadrant-shaped ends 6 and 7 of approximately q'uadrant-shapedcover sections 8 and 9, arranged to fold or swing one within the other. The ends 6 and 7 are overlapped and are provided at the points where they are pierced by thepivot bolts 5 with hearing plates 10, secured to the end portions of the cover by screws, or other suit-- able fastening devices, and have openings, which register with the openings of the eyes t of the bearing brackets.
The quadrant-shaped cover sections, which may be constructed of either wood or metal, are designed to be light so as to add but comparatively little weight to the wagon body, and when closed their lower side edges rest'upon the upper edges of the sides of the wagon body. The lower edges of the rear end p iions or the cover sections are arranged at the upper edge of the rear end wall or gate of the wafgon body, and the latter is provided at the ront ends of the cover sections with a transverse partition 11, ex tending across the wagon body and having its upper edge in flush relation with the upper edges of the side walls and rear end .wall'of the wagon body. The transverse partition cooperates with the cover sections to form practically a dust and rain tight closure, so that the contents of thewagon body will be protected from sun, wind, rain, dust and the like. The cover sections terminate short of the front end of the wagon body to provide a sufficient space for a .seat 12 and supporting means 13 for the same. The space 14 in advance of the partition 11 is open and access may be had to the same from, the front end of the wagon lOOClV."
The quadrant-shaped cover sections form a segmental or semi-cylindrical cover or top for the wagon body and either is adapted to be quickly opener and when opened exposes the entire contents of the wagon body. lVhen the cover is opened, one of the cover sections lies within the other and is compactly arranged and out of the way.
Any suitable fastening means may beemployed for locking thecover sections in their closed position.
Having thus fully described my invenlion, what I claim as new and desire to seure by Letters Patent, 1s:-
lne comhnmnon 1th a Wagon body havmg sule walls and :1 rear end Wall. and provulml wnh a transverse partltlon arranged mthm the wagon body anrl connecting the side walls near the front ends thereof, front and rumvross hare; also connecting ihe side wulle within the hody and located at- Yhv uppvr edges of the same across the rear vml \mll am! the transverse partition, hearing hrm'kcts Form-0d to the said cross bars at he w-mom hereof and having longitudi nully uliuell eyes, an approximately semi- L \'limlriml cover composed of two quadrantshaped sections seated upon the upper edges of'the side walls of the wagon body and provided with overlapped ends arranged upon the upper edges of the rear end wall of the wagon body and the said partition, and longitudinally dined pivots piercing the overlapped ends of the cover and mounted 1n the .eyes of the bearing brackets.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have heretonffixed my ture in the presence of two witnesses.
' DAVID H. SANDERS.
