Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led April 8, 1912.- Bei'ial No. 688,983.
Patented Aug. 13, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jzssr JUHsz, al
subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Unity Station, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements ini Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom anying drawing.
T iis invention re ates to locks, and more particularly to a screw lock used in connection with a door having a knob actuated lock.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a lock of the above ty e that can be operated from either side o a door and locked upon the inside of the door whereby it cannot be operated upon the outside of the door.
A further object of this invention is to provide a screw lock consisting of comparatively few parts, inexpensive to manufacture and highly eilicient for the purposes for which they are intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement ofparts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lock, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fi 3 and 4 are cross sectional views of the ock, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detached strike plate.
Further describing my invention with reference to the drawin wherein like numerals denote correspon i parts throughout: 1 denotes a portion of a oor having a recess 2 for a rectangular lock casing 3, said casing having a longitudinal artition 4 dividing the casing into a longitudinal latch compartment and a longitudinal bolt compartment 6, the latter havin transverse partitions 7, 8 and 9, also a bearing 10. The casin 3 is closed by a front plate 11 and exten in through said front plate, easing and the oor 1, also a face plate 12 carrie by said door, is a knob spindle 13 provided with knobs 14. The spindle 13 extends through a hub 15 having a latch 16 and a projection 17. The projection 17 is engaged y a flat spring 18 arranged in the compartf 55 ment 5, said spring holding the latch 16 normally in a lowered position in an openinr 19 rovided for the latch in the outer end ,l f t e casing 3.
i Revolubly mounted in the artitions 8 and 9 and the bearing 10 is a siaft 2O that has the end thereof provided with a gear i wheel 21 and a beveled gear wheel 22. The gear wheel 21 meshes with an elon ated -gear wheel 23 mounted upon a sha t 24, Journaled in the partitions 7 and 9. The 1 shaft 24 has one end thereof threaded to 5 provide a screw 25 and said screw is ad- ]ustably mounted in an opening 26 provided l therefor in the end wall 27 of the casing 3. i The shaft 24, adjacent to the screw 25, has
a transverse opening 28.
Meshing with the beveled gear wheel 22 are beveled gear wheels 29 looselv mounted upon a connecting spindle 30. The beveled gear wheels 29 have hubs 31 extending into earings 32, carried by the inner sides of the casing. The hubs 31 terminate inrectangular Shanks 33 within the bearings 32, and a key can be placed in enga ement with the Shanks 33 for rotating t e beveled gear wheels 29 and 22, and gear wheels 21 and 23, and the screw 25. In order that easy access 1 and the face plate 12 have alining openings 34 registering with the bearing 32.
The door frame 35 is recessed, as at 36 to accommodate a strike late 37, said plate having a slot 38 and a eveled lug 39, said slot receiving the latch 16. The strike plate has an opening 40 and the door -frame 35 has a recess 41 in communication with said opening. The openin 40 and the recess 4l receive the screw 25. Vhen the screw 25 is in a locked position, a screw 42 is inserted in an opening 43 provided therefor in the front plate 11, said screw enterin'g the opening 28 of the shaft 24 and preventing the shaft from being rotated.
To operate the lock, the screw 42 is removed from enga ment with the shaft 24, after which the ey is inserted to engage with the spindle 30, the latter is rotated whereby the gears 29 are operated driving the gear wheel 2l, the latter meshing with the gear wheel 23 will revolve the shaft or spindle 24 causing the threaded part 25 thereof to move inwardly and out of the opening 40. The knob 14 is then turned to release the latch 16, the door can then be swung open.
can be had to one of the Shanks 337 the door 1. In a lock, the combination with a strike plate having an openingA formed therein,- anda casing, of ashatrotatably mounted in said casing, a screw formed integral witlL saidshaft and adjustably mounted in th'e end of saidV casi and adapted. to extend into theopenn o 'isaid strike platea gear wheel mounte upon saidA shaft, another/ shaft journaled in said casing, a ar wheel carriedfthereby and-.meshing -wit therst mentioned ear` wheel, abeveled ar. wheel carried by t e first mentionedsha t,beveled gear, wh'eelameshing with said beveled. gear wheelr endl having: hubs; provided with shanks ada tedito receive: as keyi .whereby said bevel gearv wheelsean bef revolved to-impart anrotary/ movementito said shafts and adjnSLthescrevv. of the rstmentioned shaft.
2; ,Ina lock; .the combination with 'a strike plate. having anopening formed therein, and; a' casing* of 1 al -shatrotatably' mounted in said oasingga screw formed integral with f said shaft. and. adjustablymounted;A in the end of said casing and. adapted toextend intothefopenin of saidistrike platma gear wheel mount l upon. saidA shaft, another shaft .j ournaled -in--said-casing, Va. ri wheel carriedlthereby andlmeshing'wit Athe firsty mentionedl gear wheel, a. beveled gear wheel carried by the last mentioned shaft, Beveled gear wheels meshingwith said beveled gear wheel and having hubs provided with Shanks ada ted to receive a key whereby ysaid bevele gear wheels can be revolved to imiart a rotary movement to said shafts 'an adjust the screw of the first mentioned shaft,an:l` means extending into said casing and detachably connected to the first mentioned shaft to lock saidi shaft against rotation;
.3.f- In `alock, thecombinationwith aA casing,y off shafts revolubly mounted. therein and: adapted tov rotate simultaneousl aI serewcarred Ib onefof said .shafts ami'I extendingthrouglvil the Aend Avvall off saidV eas-l ing, beveledV ar wheels revolubl supported by sai casing. and adapte( when rotated to impart n movement to-said shafts,
nnd means extendin into said casing and engagin one osai ;shaftsto lock both of said sha ts against rotation.
In testimony whereof Il aiix my signature: in thei presence Vof y two witnesses.
