DEPOSITING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13,1912.
Application filed October 25, 1911. Serial No. 656,720.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, HARRY BRISON Goss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lewistown, in the county of Miftlin and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Depositing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a depositing device for placing icing, marshmallow and other fluid and plastic substances upon the surface of cakes, cookies and other kinds of pastry, particularly German and French pastries that are highly decorated.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a hand operating depositing device that can be easily and quickly moved above pastry to make deposits thereon, the depositing of a substance being controlled by a valve that is manipulated by the same hand holding the device.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the above type that is simple in construction, durable, easy to maintain in a sanitary condition, and highly eflicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal view of a portion of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan of a portion of the device, and Fig. 4: is a bottom plan of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan of a modified form of the device.
A device in accordance with this invention comprises a cylindrical shell 1 having a bottom plate 2, said shell and said bottom plate constituting the receptacle for holding substances to be deposited upon pastry. The bottom plate 2 has V-shaped legs 3 whereby the device can be placed at rest upon the table or suitable support. The bottom plate 2 has a funnel shaped spout 4: adjacent to one of the side edges thereof and the object of this spout will presently appear.
Soldered or otherwise connected to the outer side of the shell 1 is a sleeve 5 connected to said shell by angularly disposed braces or webs 6. The sleeve 5 receives a rod or handle 7, whereby the depositing device ean be easily held in the hand.
Solder-ed or otherwise mounted upon the sleeve 5 is a hearing 8 and pivotally mounted in said hearing by a screw 9 and a nut 10 is an operating lever 11, said lever having the inner end thereof flattened to provide a thumb piece 12, and the outer end thereof bent outwardly over the edge of the shell 1. Mounted upon the outer end of the lever is a hanger 13 and pivotally mounted in said hanger by a rivet or pin 14 is a tubular hollow valve stem 15 that extends downwardly in the shell 1 and through a stirrup or guide 16 suitably secured to the inner side of the shell. Mounted in the lower end of the valve stem 15 is the reduced end 17 of a valve 18, said valve normally closing the spout 4.
Mounted upon the lever 11, adjacent to the inner end thereof is a sleeve 19 having a depending pin 20 confronting a pin 21, carried by the inner end of the sleeve 5. Encircling the pins 20 and 21 between the lever 11 and the sleeve is a coiled compression spring 2. The tension of this spring retains the valve 18 normally seated in the spout 4.
By holding the handle 7 and pressing upon the inner end of the lever 11, the valve stem and the valve thereof can be elevated to allow the contents of the device to pass through the spout 4 on to the pastry, and it is in this connection that I reserve the right to detachably mount upon the spout 4 various kinds of nipples for producing various configurations upon the surfaces of pastry. The valve 18 can be shaped to force plastic substances through the spout 4, and as the device in its entirety consists of comparatively few parts, it can be readily maintained in a sanitary condition. The construction and arrangement of the parts are such that sufficient play is obtained so that there is no binding action between the stirrup 16 and the valve stem during the vertical movement of the stem.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing there is illustrated a modification of the invention, wherein the shell of the device is provided with an extra sleeve 5 having webs 6, said sleeve accommodating an extra handle when the device is to be carried by both hands or by two persons.
While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A depositing device comprising a receptacle having the bottom thereof near its perimeter provided with a spout commu nicating with the interior of the receptacle a sleeve projecting from one side of said receptacle, a vertical bearing carried by said sleeve, an operating lever pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said bearing, a handle projecting from said sleeve, said lever having its forward end extending upwardly at an inclination and over said re ceptacle, a vertically movable valve stem arranged within said receptacle, a guide for said valve stem, a valvel carried by the lower end of the st m and adapted to engage in said spout foi closing it, a hanger carried by the forward end of said lever, means for pivotally connecting said hanger to the upper end of said valve stem, and means interposed between the le ver and the sleeve for normally maintaining the valve in position to close the spout. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
