' ACID, ALKALI, AND WATER RESISTING COYERLNGi Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug-.- 6, 1912'.
Application filed .nme s, 1910. Serial No. 685.263.
To a'll whom it mayczmcam Be it knownthat I, GEORGE D.. CRABBS, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Cincoverings, and .part-icularly,- such coverings as are used forwra'ppmgt purposes. and the I The objectof my invention is to provide an efficient water/resisting and acid and alkali-resisting covering which is adapted to securely contain fine materials such "as powder, and'protect the same as well as the covering against the deleterious action of water-or chemicals. Another object of my invention is to provide a covering ofrthis character which shall be economical to manufacture and durable in use. My invention consists in an article of manufacture comprisinga layer of felt or paper coated uponone or both sides wit-h water resisting and acid and alkali resisting compound consisting preferably of asphalt and superposed upon a layer of fabric, such as burlap.
My invention also consists in the several features herein set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, which servetoillustrate the construction of my invention: Figure 1 and. acid and alkali resisting material or compound, and having ,a layer of burlap .superposed thereon, one corner of the paper,
having the coating thereon, being turned back to show the burlap and the coating on the side of the paper adjacent to said burlap. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the material showing only one side of the paper coated with the water resisting and acid and alkali resisting material, and the burlap superposed upon said water resisting and acid and alkali resistin material.
In the construction of coverings made in accordance with my invention, I am enabled to produce a very strong, durable and satisfactory covering by providing a layer 1 of paper having upon one or both sides a coat ing 2 of adhesive water resisting and acid and alkali resistin ma'teriali-tconsisting of asphaltic compoun and super osing upon one side thereof a layer 3 of fabricwhich may be of open texture, such as seven ounce burlap,- or any other lighter weight material for the purpose of giving sufficient strength andbody to the covering. "When the layer -1 of paper is coated upon one side only with the acid and alkali proof and water proof compound 2, the layer of blirlap or other fabric is embedded in and adheres to the compound. This construction enables me to. form. a strong and durable covering whichis adapted to retain the finest powdered material and being acid and alkali proof and water proof will permit of long and continuous usage when placing therein jmaterials containing acids and otherchemicals which would destroy an ordinary unprotected covering. It will thus be seen that "by this construction I produce acovering which will more etliciently hold materials containing acids as well as to prevent the same from eating the covering and de: stroying it, thus providing a more efficient article for the purposes intended. =The paper being of a fine texture prevent's any fine substance passing therethrough. The water proof and acid and alkali proof coating serves to protect the burlap from injury due to chemicals or moisture contained in the material wrapped by the covering; while the burlap gives the structure the necessary strength and the combination of the three layers provides sufficient body for the covering for the purposes intended.
It is desirable to produce a covering which is proof against the action of chemicals and water, not only for the protection of the contents within the covering but also to protect the covering itself from said dcstructive elements and agencies. When the contents within the covering is of such a .nature as not to injuriously affect the paper of the covering when directly in contact therewith; it is only necessary and essential that one surface of the paper be coated with the water proof and chemical proof material asshown in Fig. 2, but when the covering serves to incase or contain materials which have a certain amount of moisture or have a chemical action when applied to paper or similar material it is preferable that the paper be coated upon bot-h sides with the water proof and chemical proof compoun as shown in Fig. 1, so that, the covering is protected both upon the outside and upon the inside against the action of chemicals affect paper, it is desirable to omit the water proof material from the inside and provide the water proof material only upon the side to which the burlap is applied and the side which forms the out-side of the covering or wrapper.
I claim: l g 1. An article of manufacture comprising a covering formed of a layer of paper coated with adhesive water, acid and alkali resisting material consistin of asphalt and having superposed on sai material a layer of woven fabric adapted to adhere there to, substantially as set forth and'for the purposes specified. a 2. An article of manufacture comprising a covering formed 'of a layer of paper, a layer or coating of water resisting and acid of woven fabric superposed upon and adhering-to said acid and alkali resisting and water resistinglayer, substantially as set forth'and'for thefpurposes specified.
3. An article o manufacture comprising a covering, formed of alayer of paper coated with water resisting and acid and alkali resisting mater ialconsisting lof asphalt; and
having superposed thereon a layer of woven burlap, substantially asset forth. p
4. An article of manufacture comprising a covering formed'of, alayer of paper coated with adhesive water,j acid" and alkali re- I sisting material and having superposedTon said material a layer of'wovenflopen' mesh fabric adapted to, adhere ;to said material, substantially as-s'et-fort-h andfor the purposes specified. f v
