To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, T HOMAS H. VALKER,
, a citizen of, the United States, residing at Mullan, in the county of Shoshone and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Current-Motors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make'and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in current motors.
The object of the invention is to provide a current motor which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, efficient and reliable in operation and which is particularly adapted for elevating water for irrigating purposes.
Vith this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and ar' rangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.

My improved current motor comprises a suitable frame 1 provided with standards 2 which are set into the bed of the stream in which the motor is to be arranged. In the frame 1 at suitable distances apart are arranged bearings 3 and 4. In the bearings 3 and 4 are revolubly mounted cable supporting-drums 5 and 6 each of which comprises a shaft 7 having fixedly mounted thereon at suitable distances apart, hubs 8. The hubs 8 have formed thereon a series of radially projecting spoke attaching arms 9 to which are bolted the inner ends of a series of radially projecting spokes 10 the outer ends of which are secured to annular rims 11. The spokes 10 and rims 11 form the ends or heads of the cable supporting drums 5 and 6 and said ends or heads are connected together by annular plates of suitable width having therein a plurality of water discharging passages or as shown 8 in the drawings, said heads may be connected together by a series of segmental plates 12 spaced apart to form a plurality of water discharging passages through which the water may freely flow as the drums are rotated in the stream.
Arranged around and secured to the mental plates forming the annular surface of the drums are two or. more annular cable receiving channel shaped rings or bands 13 which provide grooves or channels to re ceive the blade supporting and drum operating cables letwvhich are engaged therewith and have secured thereto at suitable intervals a series of drum operating blades or paddles 15. The paddles 15 are in the form of plates or boards of suitable width and having a length corresponding approximately with the length of the drums, said plates or boards being secured to the bars 1 or cleats 16 the inner ends of which are connected by eyes or loops 17 with the cables 14. The outer ends of the cleats are connected by short chains or cables 18 to the outer operating cables 14 whereby the blades or paddles are held in an operative position v against the pressure o f the current, said pressure of the current thus being applied to the cables 14 to turn the drums.
On the supporting frame 1 at suitableS positions are arranged platforms 19 upon which an operator may stand when adjusting or repairing any of the parts of the motor and for regulating the braking mechanism by which the speed of the motor 90 is cont-rolled. Thebraking mechanism is arranged to be engaged with the drum 6 and comprises a brake bar or beam 20 which is supported by posts or standards 21 the lower ends of 'f'hich are loosely engaged with one of the platforms 19. Secured to the brake bar or beam 20 are'brake shoes 22 having segmental outer surfaces adapted to be brought into engagement with the annular surface or side of the drum 6 with 109 greater or less pressure thereby retarding the movement of said drum and through the same the movement of the cables 14 and the drum 5, to a greater or less extent as may be desired.
