VALVE-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912.
Application filed August 17, 1910. Serial No. 577,719.
ject thereof is to provide means for preventmg unauthorized use of automobiles.
-The invention is applicable to automobiles of the class that are driven by hydrocarbon' motors, and also for other purposes wherein control of fluid.under lock is desired.
The'object of this invention is accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fi re 1. is a side elevation of an automob' e,.partly cut' away, showing the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2. is a side elevation of the device; Fig. 3. is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 4. is a top plan of the device, partly in sect-ion on the line X of Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and referring now to the same:
1 is an automobile body; 2 is a running gear for the same; 3 is a hydrocarbon engine; and 4 is a storage tank for supplying the engine with fuel, the supply being effected through a feed pipe 5. The particular form of body, running gear, engine, tank, or character of fluid fuel, is not material to the invention, but in each instance is of the character usually employed for similar purposes.
The construction shown consists of a baseplate 6, the lower end 7 of which has a vertical slot 8. From the front face of the plate extend two brackets 9 between which is mounted a cylinder 10, the axis of which is vertical. An integral sleeve 11 extends from the cylinder down through the lower bracket 9, and a stem 12 ext nds up through the upper bracket 9 and has a handle 13 in connection therewith by means of which the cylinder may be turned. A recess 14 is made in the cylinder, and a pin 15 projects from theadjacent front side of the baseplate 6 into'said recess,
so that the turnin movement of the cylinder will be confined withinthe limitations of the recess, the shoulders 16 and 17, respectively, serving to stop the movements of the cylinder by coming into contact with the pin.
At one side of the cylinder 10, secured to the plate 6, is a lock 18 having a sliding bolt 19. The particular construction of the lock is not shown, and such is immaterial 'to the invention, but the lock is preferably of the snap lock type, and therefore it will be understood that the bolt tends to press against the adjacent face of the cyl-' inder. Upon the side of the cylinder adjacent the shoulder 16 is a cam face 20, which, when the cylinder is turned to the locking position, will drive the bolt back;'and when the shoulder passes the bolt, the latter will snap forward into the recess 14, and the shoulder 16 will prevent the retraction of the cylinder while the other shoulder 17 will prevent further progress thereof because engaged by the pin 15. Thus, the cylinder becomes locked until released by the withdrawal of the bolt from the recess. This latter operation is effected by means of a key (not shown) inserted into the barrel 21 of the look.
A .valve 22 is arranged in connection vwith the feed pipe 5, and has a stem 23 that projects up into the sleeve 11 and is vertically. adjustable therein. secure the stem in adjusted positions in connection with the sleeve. The valve 22 projects through the slot 8 of the extension 7 and is vertically adjustable therein, which, together with 'the adjustment between the stem and sleeve, renders the device applicable to automobiles of various sizes. For instance: The plate 6 may be attached to the front riser 26 of the seat, and the valve may be lowered or raised to suit the loca-. tion of the feed pipe 5.
This appliance may be used not only in it may be introduced between a motor or consumer of fluid and the supply of fluid.
A screw- 24 serves to -c'onnection with automobiles, but wherever in the event the fluid is electrical, of course,
a suitable switch would be substituted for the valve, or such other device would be Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the class described, a base- 5 plate; a fluid controlling device in adjustable connection with the plate and having nn operating stem; a cylinder mounted in connection with the plate and having adjustable connection with the stem; a lock 10 secured to the plate and adapted to engage and lock the cylinder when the fluid controlling device is in closed osition and a handle for turning the cylin er.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto sub- Y ELMER L. Ummnwooo,
NELLIE L. BRUGH.
