To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM DENGLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New Rochelle, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nose Guards or Clips for Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to eyeglass-clips; the object of the invention being to provide an article, of the character named which comprises clamping-members embodying respectively a malleable metal plate and an extended spring-metal plate, whereby the clip may be readily bent and adjusted to meet various physical requirements and conformations of the nose of a wearer without impairing its clamping action; a further object being to provide a device, which when bent and adjusted to the nose, allows of automatic resilient movement of one part of the clip without effect upon the other, whereby liability of slipping or loosening is obviated, while at the same time comfort and ease is maintained.

The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view showing the disassembled partsof one clamping-member of my improved clip; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the parts connected; Fig. 3, an edge view; Fig. 4, a rear elevation of a pair of eyeglasses having my improved clip attached thereto; and Fig. 5, is an edge view of one of the clamping members illustrating a slight modification of construction.

In the practice of my invention each clamping member of the clip comprises a pliable metal base-plate A and a springmetal plate B, the latter being of bowed contour. The base plate A, embodies the vertical arm 1, the laterally extended arm 2 and the relatively short vertical arm 3, which is approximately parallel with the arm 1. The bowed spring-metal plate B embodies the upper expanded and. rounded part 4, preferably having an aperture therethrough, and the contracted lower part 5. The base plate A may be composed of any Specification of Letters Patent.

suitable pliable metal, as German silver; and the plate B may be composed of steel or other spring-metal.

In assembling the parts the lower or contracted part of the spring-metal plate B, is superimposed over the short arm 3, of the plate A and connected thereto by means of suitable rivets 6. The spring-metal plate is preferably provided with an inner coating of roughened material, 7, composed of rubber, xylonite or analogous material, and a similar coat-ing 8, is provided for the arm 1 of the plate A, these said parts being secured by rivets 6 and 9. The upper part of the arm 1, of the plate A, is provided with a widened part 10, having an opening 11, for engagement with a fastening-screw 13, for securing the clip to an eyeglass post as 14.

In the modification of my invention illustrated by Fig. 5, of the drawings, the member embodying the spring-metal bowed plate, as C, is provided at its lower or contracted end part with an outwardly and upwardly directed loop 15, which is attached to the arm 3, of the plate A, by means of suitable rivets, as 16. The side conformation of this plate C, is similar to that shown by Figs. 1 and 2, of the drawings.

In assembling the clip the two parts of each clamping-member are connected, as shown by Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, then the malleable parts are bent and curved into the desired shape, as shown by Fig. 4, of the drawings, and each clamping-member is attached to its post 14, by means of a screw 13, the upper ends of each of the arms 1, being securely clamped between the head of said screw and the post, thus holding it firmly and admitting of such further bending or curving of the pliable parts as may be required by the process of accurately fitting the glasses to nose of a wearer. After the glasses are fitted it is obvious that the relatively rigid and spring-acting contact parts of the clamping members allows of free movement of the nostrils without liability of slipping.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A nose piece comprising two superimposed plates, one composed of pliable metal and the other of resilient metal, said resilient metal plate extended beyond the length of the said pliable plate, whereby its free metal secured thereto, said resilient plate.

having a free end part extended upwardly beyond the length of said lateral extension of the base-plate, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a nose guard for eyeglasses, the combination with a two armed integrally formed base-plate composed of pliable metal; of a plate of resilient metal having its lower end part fixed to one of the arms of the said base-plate and its upper end part extended beyond the length of said arm whereby said upwardly extended part may move independently of its lower fixed part, substantially as shown and described.
