To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS O. THAL- HEIMER, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Retainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bolt retaining devices and more particularly to devices of this character for holding the head of a bolt while the nut is being turned or screwed up thereon.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an improvement upon the type of structure illustrated in mycopending "pplication, Serial No. 618,884, which was filed Apr. 4;, 1911.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a bolt head securing device which may be mounted upon a support and which will permit the insertion of a bolt head therein and its removal therefrom without having access to the head of the bolt.
The device is particularly adapted for attaching the end and side ladders or hand holds to house cars. These ladders or hand holds are compelled to be not more than eight inches from the end of the car, which requirement necessitates the bolts for securing the same being passed through the end posts on some types of cars. In all house cars and particularly refrigerating cars, where the refrigerating tanks are mounted in the end the inner sheathing of the car eifectually conceals the bolt and where the tanks are used it is necessary to remove both the tanks and the sheathing to remove the bolts from. the posts when they become broken or sheared oil through contact with ob'ects along the road.
his invention is designed to obviate the diflioulty and necessary expense of removing the tank and the sheathing and provides means whereby the bolt may be inserted from the outside and removed in the same manner, even when sheared ofi' flush with the face of the car.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application and, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a box car showing the ladder rungs attached thereto and with one of the rungs heads 12 and are held in broken away. Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal section taken through the car on a line with the securingbolt and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a detail section through one of the retaining plates or washers. Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a corner which is secured the inner sheathing 2. The outer portion of the post 1 has secured to it a filler block or post 3 to which is secured the outer sheathing i which forms with the inner sheathing an air space 5. Separated a suitable distance from the corner post 1 is another filler block or post 6 which is connected to both the inner and outer sheathing 3 and 4. The corner post 1, the filler post 3 and the filler post 6 are all provided with a vertically alined series of transverse passages or openings 7 Which are substantially oblong in cross section so as'to receive and permit the passage of the oblong head 8 of the rung bolt 9 and also to permit the insertion of the thumb and fore finger on opposite sides of the bolt, as will be hereinafter described. These bolts pass through a washer 10 which is seated against the sheathing 4 and has a pair of spaced lugs 11 arranged in the aperture or opening 7 so as to hold the bolt centrally therein. outer ends. of the bolts The pass through the rung place by suitable nuts 13.
The bolt mounting or retaining device comprises an integral casting having a base 14 in the form of a plate which is apertured at opposite ends, as shown at 15, to receive securing devices which may be in the form of screws, nails or the like. In the center of the plate a transverse slot or opening 16 is formed and covering the opening is a substantially U-shaped housing 17 having a short side wall 18 upon one side and a similar side wall 19 at the opposite side. These side walls extend from the top of the plate to the top of the housing and from the end walls thereof to the edges of the opening. Immediately opposite the side walls 18 and 19 the base or plate is provided with a pair of came 20 upon which the head of the bolt is adapted to ride prior to being dropped into the sockets 21 which are postor upright to formed by the sidewalls, the base and shoulders 22 produced by the termination of the cams. .The fillerupright 6 is provided with a plurality of recesses 23 which register with the openings 7 therein and in whichthe retaining members are mounted so that the inner sheathing can be arranged flush with the inside of the post and so that the attaching members may be concealed thereby. n will be understood, that it found I desirable the corner post may also be treated in a like manner.

It will be noticed that the passages are of such construction as to permit the fingers to be inserted to grab the bolt even Where the same has been sheared oil flush with the outer surface of the car. In a device of the class described, the combination with a channeled support, of a bolt passing through the channel therein and having a head of smaller sectional area than the channel, a slotted retaining member secured to one side of the support and adapted to removably receive the bolt head, limiting shoulders formed on the member, cams opposite the limiting shoulders and forming therewith sockets to receive the head of the bolt to prevent the same from turning, guiding cams arranged at opposite ends of the slot and adapted to guide the removal of the bolt head from the member, a housing to limit the longitudinal movement of the bolt through the member and a rung securing nut carried by the bolt.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination with a channeled support, of a bolt passing through said channel and having a head of smaller sectional area than the channel, means secured independently of the bolt to the rear of the support for engaging said bolt-to prevent the same from turning, together with means to the bolt on the front of the support.
