Be it known that I, GEORGE V. PATTER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corde-ll, in the county of Vashita and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to corn-harvesters of the self-binder type, and its object is to provide a novel combination and arrangement of parts whereby the machine is adapted for harvesting Katir corn.
A further object. of the invention is to provide novel and improved means for eliminating the side draft of the machine.
The invention is shown applied to the well known McCormick corn harvester, the structure of which has been modified for the purpose specified, in a manner to be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification-Figure 1 is a plan view of the main frame of the machine. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the main-wheel side of the machine. Fig. 3 is an yelevation of the grain-wheel side of the machine.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the main frame of the machine is a sill 10 extending across the rear end thereof, and having forward bends 11 and 12, respectively, at its ends, said bends forming the longitudinal side sills of the frame. A longitudinal sill 13 connects the rear sill 10 with a front cross-sill 14. Intermediate cross-sills 15 connect the sills 11 and 13, the sill 11 being on the grain-wheel side of the machine., The sill 14 projects from bot-h sides o-f the sill 13 and one end of the former is connected to the sill 12. The other end of the sill 14 supports the forward ends of the sills 16 of the inner gathering prong, said sills 16 extending rearward and being also connected to the sills 10 and 15. The sill 17 of the outer gathering prong is connected to the sills 10 and 15. The sills 12 and 13 carry the supporting brackets 18 of the main wheel 19, which latter is located between said sills. The sill 11 carries a supporting bracket 20 for the grain wheel 21.
The sill 10 has a downward bend 22 on the main-wheel side of the machine which gives the sill 12 a drop, whereby the main wheel and its supporting brackets are given a better support, and the bundle carrier 23 Specification of Letters Patent.

To the bottom of the sill 14 is clamped a draft bar 27 having at one of its ends a downward bend 2S which terminates in a forward horizontal bend 29 which meets the offset forward extremity 26 of the sill 12 and is secured to the inner side thereof by an eye-bolt 30, to which latter is also connected a diagonal brace-rod 31 extending rearward and made fast to the sill 14. To the back of the bend 28 is clamped a tongue-coupling 32 having vertically spaced apertures 33. The butt-end of the tongue 34 carries two laterally spaced, rearwardly extending bars 36 which straddle the parts 2S and 32 and have apertures to receive a coupling pin 37 which passes through said apertures and through a selected one of the apertures 33, and thus couples the tongue to the frame of the machine. The tongue is braced by a diagonal brace rod 3S connected to the sill 14. The tongue carries the usual hand-lever 39 connected to the forward end of the sill 12 for adjusting the frame of the machine.
By the tongue-coupling herein described, the tongue may be readily raised or lowered, and the draft of the machine is also lightened. If the machine is to be given more tip, the tongue will be raised and connected to the upper one of the apertures 33.
The frame carries the cutting apparatus, conveyers, packers, binder, and other well kno-wn parts of the McCormick machine, which will be arranged to adapt them for the work the machine is designed for.
In order to eliminate side-draft, the grain wheel 21 is set so as to extend inward in the direction of the forward end of the machine, at a slight angle to the line of draft. The following means are provided for supporting the grain wheel in this position: To the sill 11 is bolted a support which secures the bracket 20 of the grain wheel 21, said bracket supporting the axle of the grain wheel in the usual manner. The support comprises front and rear depending members 41 and 42 connected at the bottom by a rThe forward porcross-bar 43 to which the bottom of the bracket 20 is secured. The top of the member 42 has a transverse horizontally extending port-ion 44 provided with a series of bolt holes 45, through any one of which may be passed a bolt 46 which secures said part to the sill 11. By providing a series of bolt holes, the support may be set so as to extend at different angles to the longitudinal axis of the machine. The part 41 issecured to the sill 11 by a bolt 47 which must be loosened before the herein-described adjustment of the support can be made. The bracket 20 is secured to the part 43 by bolts 48, and by means of one of these bolts there is also connected to said part a lateral brace 49 which extends inward and upward and is bolted to the sill 17, a series of bolt holes 50 being provided so that the brace may be adjusted with the support. The top of the bracket 2O is secured to the sill 11 by a swiveled connection comprisingr a hook 51 which passes through the eye of an eye-bolt 52 carried by the upper end of the bracket. The shank of the hook is bolted to the sill 11, said shank having a series of bolt holes 53 so that it may be adjusted inward and outward with respect to the sill. This connection permits the bracket to be set at an angle to the sill for the purpose hereinbefore described.
By the structure herein described the grain wheel can be set at different angles, the adjustment being readily effected after loosening the bolts which secure the parts, and after making the adjustment and tightening up the bolts, the machine is ready for use. The structure also lowers the grain wheel which is desirable in a machine designed for the work the present machine is intended for.
I claim:
1. In a harvesting machine, a main frame having side, front and rear end sills, the rear end sill having a drop to lower the side sill on the main-wheel side of the machine below the level of the side sill on the grainwheel side of the machine, the first-inentioned side sill having an upward bend at its forward end and being connected thereto to the front sill, and thence extending forward from said front sill and' terminating in an inwardly offset portion, and a 'draft-bar connected to the front end sill and the aforesaid offset portion of the side sill.
2. In a harvesting machine, a main frame having side, front and rear end sills, the rear end sill having a drop to lower the side sill on the main-wheel side of the machine below the level of the side sill on the grainwheel side of the machine, the first-mentioned side sill having an upward bend at its forward end and being connected thereto to the front sill, and thence extending forward from said front sill and terminating in an inwardly offset portion, a draft-bar connected to the front sill and having a downward and forward bend, said forward bend being connected to the aforesaid offset portion of the side sill.
3. In a harvesting machine, a main frame having side, front and rear end sills, the rear end sill having a drop to lower the side sill bend being connected to the aforesaid offset portion of the side sill, and a tongue-coupling carried by the downward bend of the draft-bar.
4. In a harvest-ing machine, a main frame having side, front and rear end sills, the rear end sill having a drop to lower the side sill on the main-wheel side of the machine below the level of the side sill on the grain-wheel side of the machine, the first-mentioned side sill having an upward bend at its forward end and being connected thereto to the front sill, and thence extending forward from said front sill and terminating in an inwardly offset portion, a draft-bar connected to the front sill and having a downward and forward bend, said forward bend being connected to the aforesaid offset portion of the side sill, and a tongue-coupling carried by the downward bend of the draft-bar, said tongue-coupling havingv means for adjustably connecting a drafttongue thereto, the adjustment being vertical.
