valve-piece and exhaust port 45. Now if the lever 56 be moved to its other extreme position, the slot 49 in the valve-piece will be brought into register with port 43, and
communication will be opened between the inner or return end of cylinder 22 and the supply of .steam. This movement of the valve-piece will close communication between the central bore 47 and port 42, and, consequently, between the supply of steam and the power end of the cylinder, while opening communication between port 42 and exhaust 44, thus allowing the free escape of steam from the outer or power end of the cylinder of exhaust. The piston 23 will, therefore, be moved backwardly. Obviously, by shifting the lever 56 back and forth the die block may be reciprocated on the bed-plate so as to strike a series of blows against any object that may be placed inits path.
By turning the lever 56 to an intermediate position, communication may ,be cut off between the steam supply and both ends of the cylinder.
It will be understood that the control valve 36 for the cylinder, 28 is similarly constructed and operates in the same manner. The two valves are preferably ar as shown, so that they can be handled by a single operator. If desired, the tool 31 and the die block 17 may be operated simultaneously.
In Fig. 9 I have shown a modified form of' apparatus in which the die block 57 corresponding to the die block 18 of the other machine may also be operated by fluid pressure.. The block 57 is connected, in the manner above described, to the end of the rod 58 of a piston 59 in a cylinder 60, bolted to the atmosphere or place.
to the bed-plate, the opposite ends of this cylinder being connected by pipes 61 and 62 with a control valve 63, of the construction described, to which steam is supplied through a continuation 64 of the branch pipe 33. In this form of machine the object may be operated upon from three sides, or, if desired, one or both of the die blocks may be held against the object being worked upon by the steam pressure. If one of the die blocks be used asa hammer, constitutes a cushioned support for the article operated upon.
The machine thus constructed may be used in a great variety of ways for bending, shaping, forging, welding and riveting iron and steel. The nature of the work will determine the shape and character of the tool 31. The shape and character of the die blocks may likewise be varied in accordance with the operations which they assist in performing. These latter members I have termed die blocks, but it will be clear from .the above description that they or one of them may be used to perform the function of a hammer. As the machine is susceptible of considerable change in the shape and construction of its parts without in general changing its purpose and function, I do not limit myself to the particular devices, arrangements and. constructions shown.
I claim:
In a machine for operating upon metal, the combination with a bed plate/of a cylinder secured thereto, a piston in said cylinder, a second'cylinder at right angles to the first named cylinder, a piston therein, a metal working implement connected with each of said pistons," a fluid supply pipe, a controlling device for each cylinder'comprising a casing having an inlet port, two outlet ports and two exhaust ports, and a valve, branches from the fluid supply pipe to the inlet portof each of said valve casings, and pipes leading from the outlet ports of each valve casing to the opposite ends of the corresponding cylinders; each of said valves being adapted 1n one posltion to putthe inlet port of the controlling device of the corresponding c 'linder in communication with one end 0 said cylinder throughone of said outletports and the other end of the cylinder in communication with the exhaust port through the other outlet port, and in another position to reverse these connections so that the first named end of the cylinder exhausts and the other end receives fluid fromsaid fluid supply pipe.
