To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HIRAM BnsHoRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miniature Safes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to miniature safes which are used for depositing money, jewels, and other valuables therein and which are adapted to be secured to any convenient place in a railroad car or hotel room and preferably in a railroad car to the panel between the windows of the coach and resting upon the sill.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a safe made in two sections which can be readily locked and unlocked.

Another ob ect of the invention is to construct the safe in such a manner as to permit the same being placed over a push button used for calling a porter or bell boy, as the case may be, and to provide means within the safe and on the front thereof for pushing said button.

A further object of the invention is to provide means within the safe whereby the button will be pushed and the bell rung in case any person should insert a key in the safe with the intention of taking any valuables out of the safe, thus providing an automatic alarm.

In carrying out the objects of the invention generally as stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred, and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure l is a front elevation of the invention showing the same applied in a railway car. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, a support for the safe and its immediate connections being shown in section. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, the support being shown in section. Fig. 4 is an end view of one of the compartments of the safe, showing the inside mechanism for operating the push button. Fig. 5 is an end view of the other compartment of the safe, and, Fig. 6 is a fragmentary View in side elevation of the spring lock used in connection with this invention, the casing for said lock being shown in seotion.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that the invention comprises a safe made in two compartments 7 and 8, said compartments being locked together and resting upon the sill 9 and secured to the offset panel 10 by means of the supporting brackets 11 which are secured to the rear of the safe adjacent the ends thereof.

The compartment 8 is provided inside of its open end and midway the top and bottom thereof with a small chamber 12 having therein an elongated vertical slot 13 for the reception of the spring latch carried by the other compartment and which will later be described.

The compartment 7 is provided in a convenient place with the keyhole 14 and directlyabove said keyhole and adjacent the top of the compartment there is located a push button 15. The rear wall of the compartment 7 is provided with a circular aperture 16 which is adapted to fit over a push button used for calling a porter. Upon the inside of the front wall of the compartment and located directly behind the keyhole 14 there is provided a casing 17 which has therein a mechanism (not shown) for operat-ing the oppositely disposed locking latches 18 which are carried within the casing 19.

disposed 'alined apertures 20 through which said latches 18 project and said casing 19 is adapted to fit within the slot 13 in the com partment 8 and thus it will be seen that the latches 18 will engage the inner wall of the chamber 12 and lock the two compartments together.

Secured to the top of the compartment 7 and extending from the front to the rear thereof is an elongated bearing sleeve 21. A substantially inverted U-shaped frame 22 is slidably mounted in the bearing sleeve 21. The frame 22 is also adapted to be passed through the button 15 so that when said button is pushed the frame will be caused to move toward the rear of the compartment. The front of the frame 22 is bent around the casing 17 and is provided upon its extreme end with a laterally projecting lug 23 which projects within said casing and is adapted to be engaged by a key that is inserted in the keyhole 14. It

will thus be seen that when the key engages the lock 23 it will also cause the frame 22 to move transversely of the casing. The rear depending arm of the frame 22 is also provided with a laterally projecting lug 24: which is' to engage with the push button which extends through the rear of the compartment 7 when the frame 22 is caused to move toward the rear of the casing. In order to cause-the frame 22 to return to its normal tempt to open the safe with the intention of Withdrawing the contents.

It will be understood, of course, that the parts of the safe may be constructed ofany desirable material, but steel is preferred in order to increase the strength and durability of the invention.

Having thus described the invention what i claimed i In a device of the class described, the combination with a safe; of a bearing sleeve in said safe and carried by the top thereof a substantially. U.-shaped frame slidable in said sleeve and extending transversely of said safe,means carried by said safe and engaging said frame for moving the same toward'the rear of the safe in order to ring a bell, and means for returning said frame to its normal position.
