of G rand Forks, in the county of Grand 1* orks and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Tool-Handle Holder, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to tools or imple-.
ments, such as garden rakes, hoes, forks, chisels, screwdrivers and the like, and pertains especially to devices whereby asingle holder may be used successively for attaching a single xhandle tovarious tools of similar ordifi'erentcharacter, or for the purpose of renewal of a broken or defective handle in a certain tool or set of tools.
The invention consists essentially in the construction and combination of parts herefss inafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a tool handle holder shown in assembled position; Fig. 2 is a substantially longitudinal vertical section of the same, on the line 2-2 of Fig.3; Fig. 3 is a substantially horizontal sect-ion on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but indicating the parts partially assembled; v I I Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings similar parts are indicated by like reference characters.
At 10 is indicated a socket member ofany form or construction suited to any particular application of the device, made preferably of metal, and having the socket 11 for the reception of a handle 12. This socketmaybe provided if desired with an extension 11 of reduced size,'into which is fitted the lug or extension 12 of a handle 12,
whereby the rigidity and stability of the handle connection are increased. Said handle is removably though rigidly secured in the socket by one or more removable means, such as screws 13, as shown.
The socket member 10, at the end opposite the handle, is cylindrical in form at 14, the inner end of such cylinder terminating in a shoulder 15, and that port-ion of the member 10 between said shoulder and the main body thereof is formed frusto-conical at 16. Said cylindrical end is provided with a transverse key seat 17 and with a central longitudinal threaded bore 18, which may extend, for convenience of manufacture, all
the way into the aforesaid socket extension 11. The other principal member of this holder consists of a substantially cylindrical ferrule 19, having a rotatable and sliding fit upon the aforesaid cylindrical end 14 of the socket member 10and having its inner end 20 of hollow conical form, to abut against the surface 16 of the socket member. The outer end of the ferrule is formed with a rectangular bore 21 and adjacent shoulders 22. A pair of oppositely-arranged openings or slots 23 is provided in the ferrule, so as to register with said key seat 17.
The tool 24, of whatever description, is presumed to be provided with a shank 25 to fit the bore 21 and with shoulders 26 to abut against the ferrule shoulders 22, whereby the tool will be snugly seated in the ferrule and will rotate therewith around and along the cylinder let. The extreme end of the shank is threaded at 27, for cooperation with the threaded bore 18, whereby the tool and ferrule are caused to bind snugly against the cylinder 14 and conical surface 16 of the socket member 10. Accidental or unintended rotation or displacement of the tool and ferrule are prevented by any suitable positive locking means, such as a removable cotter 28 passing through the shank and registering openings 17 and 23.
The relative sizes and proportions of the holder may be modified within certain limits without departing from the spirit of the invention, and the form illustrated is to be understood as being merely suggestive of many specific forms which maybe produced within the scope of the invention claimed.
Amongthe several advantages of this device considered as an improvement over others previously proposed for similar purposes, is the fact that the constructionprov'idcs an easily detachable and interchangeable connection, having a neat appearance, and through its simple construction itis feasible to form the socket member with its ends at an angle to each other, as is customary in certain classes of implements, and yet not interfere in any way with the free manipulation of the handle or the tool inde-' her having means at one end to detachably secure a handle and having its other end of cylindrical formation with a threaded longitudinal bore to receive the threaded shank of an suitable tool, a ferrule rotatable aroun and slidable along said cylindrical end, and detachable positlve means to lock the ferrule from such rotation.
. 2. The combination of a socket member, a handle removably secured in one end thereof, the other end of such member being provided with a threaded bore and a trans verse key seat, a ferrule snugly fitted upon the latter mentioned end and provided with a rectangular bore, a tool shank fitted in said rectangular bore and having its extreme end threaded into said threaded bore independent of said handle, and means in said key seat positively preventing rotation and displacement of said ferrule and tool, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a holder member having a cylindrical end and an adjacent frusto-conic'al surface, aferrule having rotatable and slidable fit upon said cylindrical end and having one of its ends of hollow conical form to cooperate with said frustoconical surface, a tool shank fitted into and tions snugly together,
against the other end of said ferrule, and removable means positively preventing relative movement between the ferrule and the holder member.
4. The combination of a socket member having one end of cylindrical form with an adjacent frusto-conical surface, said end having a central threaded bore and a transverse kev seat, a ferrule having a rotary and sliding t upon said cylindrical end and having a hollow conical end abutting against said frusto-conical surface, the other end of the ferrule being formed with a rectangular bore with adjacent shoulders, a tool shank fitted into said ferrule bore and against said shoulders and also screwed into said threaded bore, holding said conical porand means in said key seat positively preventing relative movement between the ferrule and the socket member.
