Letters Patent N 103,360, datcd'May 24, 1870.
IMPRovnn MEAT-CUTTER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same -reference being had to4 the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention consists in adjusting vertically the` chopping-block or table of meat-cutting machines, in order to lbring its upper surface in the proper position `for the cutting-edges ot' the knives.
To accomplish this,.Ipla ce umlerneath. the block or table two movable inclined planes, on which' thc bed-plate and supporting-blocks of the table rest. Secured on the under sides ot' these blocks are strips of India rubber for receivingr the shock and jar of the i machine.
The incline planes a-re `operated ,by means ot' a screw-shaft provided with a hand-wheel or crank..
Herctofore, when the knives wore away from constant usage, they were adjusted on the. cross-heads. This consumed a great amount of time and labor, as it necessita-,ted the slackening and tightening up ot' numerous nuts on the bolts connecting the knives to the cross-heads.
y Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement in meat-cutting machines. i
Figure 2 is a plan view of same.
Figure 3 is a vertical section ot'V same.
To enable those skilled in thc art to make `and use my invention, I will now proceed todescribe its con- 'Ihe chopping-block or table Bis of the ordinary construction, and is provided in the center and onthe lower side with a spindle, S, which extends down and revolves in the socket K. This socket is secured to the base-plate E of fthe machine, and is made of the proper height, so` as to allow thc block B to rise a considerable distance without withdrawing the spindle S4 from it. i
.'Ihe bed for supporting the block B is composed of two inclined planes, .I P and I P', which are secured at the proper distance apart, and perfectly parallel, by means ofthe cross-pieces C and brace F. lOn the upper or inclined surfaces of the said planes are placed two supporting-blocks, D and.1)',on the upper part of which is placed and sccnreda bed-plate, P, provided on its top side with a series of friction-rollers, It,
It?, It?, and l, on vwhich the block B rests and re volves. j
lh'c base ot' each of the inclined planes I Pand I l", are groovcd'iu the direction of their length, the
grooves being made inany desired form, and lit over corresponding formed guides Grv and Gl, secured on top ot' the base-plate E. Y
rlhe inclined 'surfaces of the planes "are also provif ded with guides GrA2 and G3, over which are fitted corresponding grooves formcd'on the lowerY edges of the blocks D and D'.
Secured on the lower edges of the blocks I) and D', and on each side ot' the vguides G2 and G, are strips N and N,of Indiarnbber, which rest on the .inclined surfaces of the planes I Pand I P', so as to receive any sudden shock or jar, and prevent injury to the machine.
The inclined planes I l and I P are moved in and out under the blocks D and D', by means of the shaft T, provided with a screw-thread which works into a nut, H. 'lhe said unt is placed in a recess, O, formed in ythe center ot' the cross-pieces C.
Tile shaft 'l is also provided with a collar, L, which works against the bearing J, secured to the base-.plate E, motion being given tothe shaft through a crank or hand-wheel, W. g
The inclined planes I P and I 1)' are made of any inclination desired, and when moved under the blocks I) and D', act as wedges in supporting the choppingblock the proper height, so as to allow its upper surface to be touched by the. knives in their up-anddown movements.
Having thus described my invention, its construction and operation, Y
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, 'lhe construction and operation ot' the inclined planes I I and Il, cross-piece C, brace F, supportingblocks I) and D', bed-plate P, spindle S, socket K,`
