SANTIAGO GARAVAGNO, OF MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY, SOUTH AMERICA.
nEsK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented'uly 23, 1912, Application filed November 25, 1910. Serial Ilia-594,042.
a resident of Montevideo, Uruguay, South America, have invented a new andImpro-ved Desk, of which the following is a full, clear and exact description I objects which the present lnvenfion has in View are: to provide a desk of the character mentioned hav ing a flexible roll top and a tilting shelf operatively connected therewith; to provide a straight front section for the roll top to simulate the front of the usual desk; to provide an operative connection between the said roll top and the said shelf to cause the same to operate in unison; to provide a desk which is compact in form, occupying a minimum of space and having extensible members to give the requisite area when in operation; to provide a simple and eflicient attachment for latching an extended leaf in operative position; and to provide asimple and eflicient means for holding the shelf in the advanced or retracted position.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which.-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a desk constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fi 2 is a vertical cross section of the same, t e desk being? shown in the'closed position; Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the arran ement ofthe parts when the desk is in the open position; Fig. 4 is a detail view, on an enlarged scale and in vertical section, showing the side shelf with which the invention is provided in conjunctionwith the frame of the desk, showing the shelf in the recumbent position; and Fig. 5 is a similar view, showing the shelf in its extended position.
The desk is composed of side pieces 10, 10, which are permanently secured by. cross braces 11, 11, a brace 12, a back 13 and a' molding 14. A shelf 15 1s fixedly mounted upon pivot arms 16, 16.- The plvot arms 16 are extended downwardly from the shelf 15 and are pivoted upon the sidepieces of the desk and upon the screws 17, 17 The result of this mounting ofthe shelf 15 is that.
the same swings the center of gravity of the said shelf and any article secured thereto about the screws 17 as a plvot, so that when the shelf is in the horizontal position the center of gravity of the said shelf. is advanced outward beyond the center of the screws 17, while, when the shelf is inclined backward the center of gravity is thrown to the rearof the said screws 17. In this latter position of the shelf 15 it is supported bylinks 18, 18. The links 18, 18 are pivotally connected at l9-to pivot bars.20, 20.
The pivot bars 20, 20 are pivoted at 21 upon the sldes 10 of the desk. Fixedly mounted on each of the pivot bars 20 is an extended pin 22. The pin;'22 is provided to pass under the uppermost one of the links 18 when the said pivot bars are rotated on the pivot 21. extends'the pin 22 to the front of the desk, while it carries the pivot 19 to the rear of thedesk. In assuming. this relation the pin 22 impinges upon the uppermost of the links Y18 and raises the lowermost of the said links and the extended arm 23 connected therewith. The arm 23 is a continuation of the arm 16. This action rotatesithe arm 16,23 upon the screws 17 and lifts the shelf 15 to a horizontal and outwardly advanced posi-- tion, substantially as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
i The position of the shelf 15 when extended as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, is
secured by reason of the fact that the center The rotation of the pivot bars of gravity of the said shelf, and the articles carried thereby, is advanced forward of the screws 17. It is also held by the lock produced by the pivot bars 20 being thrown to the position as shown in Fig. 3 of the draw.- ings, to be there held by the weight of the desk front.24 and the flexible apron 25 con.-
nected therewith. The desk front 24 and the apron 25 are held from dropping below the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawv ings, by a top rail 26 of the back 13, upon which the desk 'front 24 assumes the position as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The desk front 24 is fixedly connected to the end of the pivot bars 20, 20, and is hinged at 27 to a molding member 28 of the .flexible apron of which the said molding ,member forms a part and the forward edge.
The apron is preferably constructed as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, having a section formed from narrow re tangular pieces 29, 29 arranged to rest upon the bars 20, 20 and to forma flat inclined desk top. This top is desirable in that it serves as a temporary top on which can be i for desk tops. The rabbeted portion of the placed any suitable article, or on which a note might be written. 1
Interposed between the fiat portion con structed from the pieces 29, 29..and a tail board 30, is a series of round'pieces 31, 31 connected as is usual informing the aprons top thus formed is provided to rest over a rounded shoulder 32 formed on the side pieces 10, 10.
Adjacent to the back 13, and on the edge side pieces 10, and the key hole being ex posed in the edge thereof, as shown at 34 in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When the desk front 24 is thus locked it is impossible to raise the edge of the desk, for the reason that the tail board is provided with a holding batten 35 that extends close under the molding 14 at the {back of the desk. The contents of the desk are safe from tampering when the desk is thus closed and locked, access from beneath being prevented by the bottom 36. The desk is thus rendered practically dust proof, as well as proof against interference or mutilation. I I
For the convenience of the operator the shelf 15 is provided with a pull drawer 37. It is unnecessary to provide the pull drawer with'a lock, as when the shelf 15 is raised, as shown in'Fig'. 2 of the drawings, the pulldrawer 37 extends 'up and behindthe desk front 24; The pull drawer "is"operated by a handle 38.
It will be seen that a desk structure thus formed is compact. The principal application to which the desk is put is as a desk for typewriting machines.
The desk is preferably provided with short side shelves 39, 39, to one ofwhich is horizontally attached a leaf 40. The leaf 40 is provided withan extended hinge 41, the wings whereof are so arranged on the shelves 39 and the said leaf40, as to fit over the edgemold'ing of the said shelves 39. Carried upon -a block 42,; fixedly mounted on the leaf 40,.is a latch liver 43.
The lever 43 is pivoted ,at44 u n "the said block 42. The lever 43) is guided in a loop 45, and is thrown intooperative positionby of a pin 48 to holdingly engage'the same and prevent the fall of the said leaf. When it is desired to disengage the latch 43 from the. pin 48, the tail piece 49 of the latch 43 is depressed by the finger of the operator.
It will be 'noticed that the latch 43 and the tail piecel49 thereof, and the leaf 40, are placed convenient to the chair of the operator, so that the leaf may be raised or. lowered bythe operator without his removing from the chair.
While the use of the desk is herein shown and described as peculiarly advantageous for typewriting machines, it will be understood that its use is not limited to such employment. It may be as conveniently used as a repository or stand for automatic music machines, sewing machines, or machines of similar character.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A desk, comprising a plurality of side pieces having in' the rear thereof vertical grooves; structural brace members rigidly connecting said side pieces and embodying a back member; a front piece adapted to fit between said side pieces; a plurality of pivot bars pivotally connected with said side pieces and fixedly united with said front piece; a flexible top ,covering hingedly connected with said front piece, and having a section embodying a plurality of rectangular parallel flexibly connected wood pieces and a further-section of half rounded parallel wood pieces, the section formed of rectangular pieces being adapted when resting upon the pivot bars to form a flat desk top, and said rectangular and half rounded pieces being arranged to track within the vertical grooves at the back edge of said side pieces; a tail board pivotally attached to said flexible top covering; and a stop molding fixedly mounted on said side pieces and adapted to be impinged upon by said .tail board to arrest the travel of said top -covering.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
