Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, TILLIAM F. LOCK- wooo and Janus E. THOMPSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Hollis, in the county of Harmon and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Chairs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rail chairs, and is designed to provide a device of this nature which may readily be secured to a tie of the usual or modified construction in such a manner that the rails will rigidly be secured and retained from spreading, which latter has been a very objectionable feature her tofore.
It also contemplates the construct-ion of a rail chair wherein the clamping members of the same are rigidly secured to the body of the chair in such a manner that the same may in no way be loosened therefrom.
lVith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tie supplied with the present invention, illustrating the same as securing the rails to said tie; Fig. 2 is a central, longitudinal section taken through said rail chair, illustrating the same as applied to the rails; Fig. 3 is a fragmental longitudinal sectional view taken through the elements 23 and 25; Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating the co operation between the clamping portion of said rail chair and the body portion thereof.
The rail chair forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a body portion having enlargements at each terminal thereof, said enlargements being pierced by longitudinal passages. The outer face of each enlargement is provided with a depression which is adapted to receive onehalf of the base of the rail, and has projecting lugs arranged below the said depression. A clamping member coiiperates with each enlargement, and is provided with a depression. adapted to, in combination with the depression of the enlargement, receive the base of the rail; each clamping portion being provided with longitudinal openings therein, adapted to receive pins. A clamping bolt is arranged within the longitudinal passage of the body portion, and is adapted to project through the clamping portions, said bolt cooperating with nuts at each terminal thereof to rigidly lock the said clamping portion to the body portion.
From the following description it will clearly be understood that the enlarged portions of the body portion and the clamping members not only retain the rails from spreading, but also provide a means whereby the fish-plates may be eliminated when it is so desired.
Reference now being had more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a tie of wood or any suitable construct-ion. Secured to the upper face of the tie is a plate 11 pierced at various localities by the spikes 12 to secure the same to the tie in such a manner that the plate is retained for movement. At each terminal of the plate 11 is an enlargement 18, which is pierced by the longitudinal passage 14, in which is mounted a rod 15, said rod projecting from the outer face of. said enlargement at each terminal of the plate 11. Cooperating with each enlargement 13 is a clamping member 16 which is somewhat similar in construction to the enlargement l3, and is provided with projections through which the spikes 17 project to rigidly secure said clamping member to the tie after the same has been adjusted to such a position that the rails indicated as R are clamped between the enlargement and the clamping member, as will hereinafter be more fully described. Each clamping member 16 is provided with a central, longitudinal passage 18 into which the tapered terminals 19, of the rod 15, project, the terminals of said rod being retained within the passage 18 of the clamping members, through the instrumentality of nuts 20 operating on the terminals of said rod. The enlargements 13 of the plate 11 and the clamping members 16 are provided with complemental engaging depressions 21, which are adapted to receive the base of the rails R These complemental engaging depressions or recesses are located centrally with respect to the abutting faces of the enlargements 13 and the clamping members 16; the surfaces of said clamping members and enlargements above said complemental depressions being shortened to accommodate the web of the rails. On each side of the said. central passage 18 of each clamping member 16 is a socket 22 adapted to receive the pins 23 carried by the adjoining surface of the cooperating enlargement 13, said pins being arranged on each side of the protruding terminal 19 of the rod 15 adjacent thereto. The surfaces Ql located above the complemental depressions 21 are pierced by the opening passages 25 which are adapted to receive the bolts 26, said bolts piercing the web of the rail and doubly securing the same to the chair forming the subject matter of the present inven tion.
From the foregoing it will readily be understood that the operation of the rail chair 5 heretofore referred to and described, is as follows: The plate 1.1 is centrally secured to the tie 10 by spikes 12 previous to securing the clamping members thereto. The clamping members 16 are then located to receive the protruding terminals 19 of the rod 15 and the pins 23, the rails being then placed in the complemental depressions or recesses :21, after which the clamping members are then moved toward the enlargements 13 until they rest flush against the rails It after which the nuts 20 are tightened on the threaded projecting terminals of the rod 15. This construction is sutlicient to hold the rail firmly in the chair forming the subject matter of the present invention and provides a double assurance against the separation of the clamping members from the enlargements 13, the bolts 15 passing through both the enlargements 13 01 the clamping members 16 and the webs of the rails R Furthermore, after the bolts 26 have been secured, as well as the nuts 20, the clamping members 16 are secured to the tie through the instrumentality of the spikes 17.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and. desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent, is:
1. In a rail chair, the combination with a plate of twin enlargements formed at the terminals of said plate, and twin rail clamping members cooperating with said enlargements, said clamping members and enlarge ments being provided with complemental rail engaging depressions, and a bolt carried by said plate and projecting through said clamping members whereby the latter may be secured to the said enlargements.
2. In a rail chair, the combination with a plate, of twin enlargements formed at the terminals of said. plate, twin rail. clamping members cooperating with said enlargement-s, said clamping members and enlargements being provided with complemental rail engaging depressions, a bolt carried by said plate and projecting through said clamping members whereby the latter may be secured to the said enlargements, and means piercing said enlargements and clamping men'ibers and securing the rail. mounted in said complemental depressions therein.
