JOSEPH HILL, 0E NEW YOEEN.' Y., AssGNoE 'ro E1MsELE,M.s.ERosT,
i l `AND E. P. HUYLEE, 0E SAME PLAGE.
LettersPatent No. 103,331, dated May 24, 1870.
Y IMPSOVEMENT In' @entame 4eliminieren The4 Schedule referred to in these Lettexs Patent and making part o! the aange.
i lower portionof the plate or cylinder.
I obviatc this diicnlty by making the negative element in the form of an annular disk, A, figs. 1 and 2. This disk `is heldin a glass (or other suitable mai terial) vessel, B,fig. 1, having an opening in the center O. Mercury is then poured upon the disk till it is covered, and the whole suspended in the top of a jar, D, by means oilead 4hangers a a, lig.1, so that t-hedisk wilibe lfuly immersed in the exciting Huid.
The horizontal position of the disk` insures an equal coating ot mercury till thewbole of it is consumed.
The positive element is a disk, d, figs. 1 and 3, of copper-wire cloth secured to a spider vframe, e, .to in' sure stiffness, and rests on the rim of the Yessel B.
4 Si. ieail shoulder, E, gs. 1 and 3, on the center oi the wire-cloth disk holds a rod with binding-screw f. ii/'hen a circuit is made between the two elements,
a rapid evolution of' hydrogen takes place, the gas rising up through the meshesof the wire-cloth, and
generating a current from the center opening 0 toward the sides'of the jarycausing a continuous circli- `lation of thc fluid, and thus securing 'a uniform and constant action till the battery is exhausted.
What I claim as my invention is' 1. Suspending horizontally the negative plate in vor near the top of a jar or other vessel, under such conditions as shall secure a full andequable coating oi' mercury and circulation of' the fuids, substantially as herein described.
2. .The use of wire-cloth as the positive element in a gennaio-battery, substantially in the manner and for the p'urpose specified.
