The nails C are first driven into the'roof boards or other foundation, leaving their heads slightly above the surface thereof, the sections are loosely arranged or laid as above explained on the roof boards, there being no connection between them and the roof. The plastic coating material is then laid on over the roof boards and the rows of distributing joints or sections 1, leaving the tops of the central folds exposed and being careful not to disturb their arrangement above described. It will be seen that when the plastic material hardens it will have tongues fitting snugly in the valleys or gutters respectively, above described, thus providing a strong locl("'betw.een said plastic material and said expansible distributing joints.
From the above described arrangement of the expansible distributing joints or sections 1 it is obvious that the plastic coating will be divided into a plurality of sections bounded on each side by said expansible distributing joints, hence any expansion or contraction due to heat or cold respectively will be absorbed evenly by said distributing joints 1 throughout the entire coating, thus the stress and strain will be distributed evenly. It is also to be noted that any water working itsway betweenthe plastic material. and the central folds will be received and carried off from one joint to another until the roof gutter or edge of the roof be reached by said valleys hercinbefore described, thus the roof will be perfectly waterproof.
It is perfectly obvious that this invention is not restricted to use in roofing, but is capable of use and may be used in connection with flooring, walls, &c., where it is desired to apply a coating of plastic material which will be subject to changes in temperature and will therefore expand and contract in accordance therewith.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An expansible distributing joint for a plastic coating comprising a central stem and two prongs projecting at acute angles therefrom, said stem and prongs having central folds and integral side flanges parallel spective valleys of said stem. 1

4. A foundation and a plastic applied thereto, in combination withja plurat' 1ty of expansible distributing joints arranged in rows loosely over said foundation before said coating is applied, said joints each having two prongs projecting at acute angles from a central stem and means for positive engagement with the material of said coating, the joints of alternate rows having their prongs project upward and the joints of the intervening rows having their prongs project downward, the ends of the downwardly projecting prongs overlapping the ends of the upwardly projecting prongs and the lower ends ,of the central stems over-. lapping in all rows the upper ends of the central stems of the next lower joints, substantially as set forth.
5. A foundation and a plastic coating applied thereto, in combination with a plurality of expansible joints arranged in rows over said foundation before said coating is for 'a 140.

A foundation and a plastic coating applied thereto, in combination with a plurality of expansible joints arranged in rows over said foundation before said coating is applied, said joints comprising a central stem, prongs projecting therefrom at acute angles, and means for positively engaging the material of said plastic coating, the joints of alternate rows having their prongs project upward and the joints of the intername w this specification in the presence of gening rowsh having their prongs dproject two subscribing witnesses.
