Be it known that I, WARREN P. HARTHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVorcester, in the county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in RELZO1S13IOPS, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of razor strops in which the strop is wound in a suitable case in which it is normally held coiled by the tension of a spring which per mits the strop to be withdrawn from the case, against the stress of said spring, when desired for use.
The invention has for its object to provide a case the barrel portion of which will be tightly gripped by the heads of the case when the parts are in working position, as also to provide convenient means whereby such gripping action may be effected by tightening a screw bolt, as also to provide convenient means whereby the spring,

be suitably held in place, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a device embodying the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof. Figs. 3 and 4c are detail views of certain parts to be hereinafter referred to.
Referring to the drawing, the strop-holding sheet-metal case consists of a cylindrical or barrel port-ion 12 having end heads 13 and 14.. The head 13 is provided with a central square or polygonal opening 15, and the head 14 has a central circular opening 16. The heads 13 and 1 1 are preferably of concavo-convex form, each of said heads having near its periphery an inclined annular groove 17 formed by properly bending the sheet metal of which these heads are made, this construction providing an inwardly extending annular lip 18 on each head. The ends of the barrel portion 12 of the case are entered into the grooves 17, so that when the heads 13 and 14 are drawn together, as will be hereinafter explained, the inclined groove construction will have a tendency to force the ends of the said barrel portion outward against the inwardly extending lips 18 which overlap the ends of the said barrel portion, and thus effecta Specification of Letters Patent.

gripping hold between the said heads and the ends of said barrel portion such as will prevent the latter from turning in the heads.
Centrally supported within the barrel is a cylindrical sheet metal winding drum 19 within which is inclosed a torsional spring 20, one end of said spring being engaged with a portionof said drum and the other end thereof being received in a slit 21 in an internally threaded nut 22 having a square or polygonal portion 23 which fits the squared or polygonal opening 15 of the head 13. Thus one end of said spring will be held stationary with said nut, while the other end thereof will turn with said drum so as to wind up or give torsional tension to said spring when the strop is drawn out of the case. The drum 19 is provided at its ends with caps 24 having central circular openings, the cylindrical portion of the nut 22 being received in the opening in one of said caps and the opening in the other of said caps receiving a boss 25 on a bolt 26 having a threaded inner end to engage the interior thread on the nut 22. The boss 26 also has a loose fit in the circular opening 16 in the head 14; and, adjacent to said boss, the said bolt is provided with a head 27 which is nicked for the reception of a screw driver by which it may be turned to draw the said head and the nut 22 toward each other for the purpose of tightening the heads 13 and 14 on the ends of the barrel portion 12 of the case.
The strop 28 is attached at its inner end to the drum 19 and is wound on said drum, after having been drawn out through a slot in the case 12, by the tension of the spring 20. The said strop 28 is provided at its outer end with a handle 29 which is sufliciently thick to serve as a stop to limit the inward movement of the strop'into the case under the stress of the spring 20. The inner end of the strop 28 may be attached to the winding drum 19 by the means shown in my U. S. Patent No. 931,758, or in any other suitable manner.
The barrel or case 12 is provided with a swiveled loop 29 by which the device may be engaged with a suitable hook when the strop is to be uncoiled and drawn out for use.
The barrel portion 12 of the casing consists of a strip of sheet metal bent into circular form, the said strip being of such length that the ends thereof, when the strip is bent into the form above stated, will be slightly separated from each other, leaving a slit or opening through which the strop 28 may pass when running out of or into the casing. This construction permits the barrel portion of the casing to expand slightly when the end heads 13 and 14: of the casing are drawn together by screwing the bolt 26 into the nut 22, the ends of the eXpansible casing being, by such drawing together of the end heads, tightly wedged into the inclined grooves 17, and tightly gripped by the walls of said grooves, for the purpose of preventing the said barrel portion from turning in the heads, as hereinbefore indicated.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention provides a strop-holding case of simple construction, and which is so made that the barrel portion of the case will be tightly gripped to the heads thereof so that the said barrel portion cannot turn within the said heads when the razor strop is drawn out for use against the stress of its torsional returning or coiling spring 20. Also the construction described atlords a simple means for holding one end of the coil spring stationary with the strop casing, while the other end thereof, which is connected with the drum on which the strop is coiled, will turn with said drum so as to be placed under tension when the strop is drawn out, and when the pull on the strop is released said strop will be wound upon the drum 19 by the stress of said spring.
Having thus described my invention l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A razor strop casing comprising end heads having inclined annular grooves, near their peripheries, and an expansible sheet metal barrel portion the ends of which are entered in said grooves, combined with a bolt and nut for drawing the said end heads together and thereby causing the ends of said barrel portion to be strongly gripped by said heads, said nut having a squared or polygonal portion non-rotatively mounted on one of said end heads and said bolt being free to turn relative to said nut, a winding drum rotatively mounted in said casing, a torsional spring within said drum and connected with said drum and nut, and a razor strop one end of which is attached to said drum so that it may be coiled thereon by the tension of said spring.
2. A razor strop casing comprising end heads having inclined annular grooves, near their peripheries, and a sheet metal barrel portion the ends of which are entered in said grooves, combined with means for drawing the said end heads together and thereby causing the ends of said barrel portion to be strongly gripped. by said heads, said means consisting of a central bolt passing through one of said heads and a nut non-rotatively mounted in the other of said heads and engaged by a threaded portion of said bolt, a winding drum rotatively mounted in said casing, a torsional spring within and attached to said drum, and a razor strop one end of which is attached to said drum so that it may be coiled thereon by the tension of said spring.
8. A razor strop casing comprising a barrel portion and end heads having inclined, annular grooves receiving the ends of said barrel portion, one of said end heads having a central squared or polygonal opening combined with a nutmounted in said head and having a squared or polygonal portion to fit the said opening, said nut being provided with a slit, a bolt passing through the other end head and engaging said nut, a torsional spring encircling said bolt and one end of which is entered into said slit in said nut, a winding drum in which said spring is inclosed and which is engaged by the other end of said spring, combined with a razor strop one end of which is attached to said drum so that it may be coiled thereon by the tension of said sprin In testimony whereof I aliix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
