To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ENGLAND BARKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morgan Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic Registers, of which the following is a clear,
full, and exact description.
My invention relates to autogr'aphic reg-- isters, and particularly to that kind known as tripligraphs and similar in principlev to that for which Letters Patent of the United States were grantedto me, May3l, 1904, No. 761,436. I
The object of my invention is to accomplish the same results as I accomplished by the autographic register covered by said patent, namely, to enable the same to be used either for a register in which one of the record-strips is rewound within it, or a register in which the rewinding feature is dispensed with, and from which two or more or all of the record strips issue so that they can be conveniently torn off.
A further object of my invention is to permit this to be done without necessitating the removal of the actuating crank from the extended end of one shaft to that of another. And it is also an object of my invention to employ gearing to accomplish this result s mply by the displacement of a single gear, substantially as hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointed out in the claims.

the journals of the shaft of .down to the record roller My invention is applied to the hinged or movable section B of thecasing of an autographic register of the kind shown and described in the aforesaid Patent, 761,436, and its purpose is not to change but to facilitate the operation of the machine: In this machine the strips of record paper are usually unwound from rolls whichare removably journa'led in the stationary section of the casing (not shown) and in like manner in the hlnged section B thereof. These strips of paper are directed to the rear end of the bed-plate b or table, and are then passed forward over the same, where they can be written upon if desired. At theforward end of the bed-plate are two delivery rollers 0, d, thelower one of which have bearings in the side-walls of the hinged section B, and the per oneof which have hearings in the ends of rocking-frames D which, intermediate their ends, are securely mounted on the ends of a rock-shaft D, that has hearings in the side-walls of the register. The rockingframes can be moved, when desired, so as to lift the upper delivery roller 0 from the lower, d, near the front end,'and suitable bearings are provided in the side-walls of the hinged section for the journals of a removable take-up or record receiving roller H, one of which extends through its bearings, and has a suitable gear 2 secured to it,

When, however, the device is to be operated directly by the delivery-rollers, the strip of paper leading to the take-up roller H is severed and thus disconnected from said roller, leaving the strips of paper H, upon which it passing over the platen to be drawn out by the delivery-rollers c and d, as will be understood. Contiguous to the inside of their bearings the delivery rollers 0, d, are provided with intermeshing gears c, so as to make them revolve at the same speed, and

upon which gear (Z is mounted, is extended through its bearings and has a gear S secured thereto.
. At a point between gear 2 on the extended end of the journal of the record roller and gear S I provide hearings in the sides of section B for a shaft 5, which latter has one end extended through its bearings and has a gear 6 mounted thereon, and beyond said gear has a suitable crank 20 suitably secured thereto. ()n the opposite end of shaft 5 next the inner surface of the sidewall of the register, a ratchet 7 is mounted which is engaged by a pawl 8 pivoted to the sidewall and prevents the shaft 5 from reversing. Gear 6 engages a comparatively large idle-gear 9, which latter is journaled on a stud 10 projecting outwardly from the side-wall of the register, and this idle-gear 9 meshes with the gear 2 of the. recordroller. 1
A guard 12 consisting of a suitably shaped plate is secured in frontof the side-wall by means of screws and spacing washers, to protect and guard the train of gears hereinbefore mentioned, and this guard 12 is provided with openings for the adjacent extended ends of the shaft 5 and the journals of the record roller to pass through. At a suitable point between gears 6 and S, a slot 13 is made in said shield, which is elongated in a direction intersecting an imaginary line connecting the axes of shaft 5 and roller d at an angle of, say, about ninety degrees. A spindle 14 extends transversely through slot 13 and its inner end terminates between plate 12 and the adj acent side of the register, and the outer portion of spindle 14! extending through slot .13. Said outer portion is screw-threaded and provided with a thumb-nut 15. On the inner end of spindle 14 an idle gear 16 is journaled, which, when the spindle 14 is moved to the lower limit of slot 13, will be out of engagement with gears 6 and S, but which, when the spindle is moved a sufficient distance toward the upper end of slot 13, will intermesh with said gears Sv and 6 and transmit the motion of the latter to the former. In order to retain idle-gear 16 either in or out of engagement with gears 6 and S, a nut 15 is tightened to clamp the spindle in the desired position.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 of the drawings, I show a modified form of my invention. This consists in providing an idle-gear 18, which, in one position, will be in engagement with a drive-gear 17, and in its other position will be thrown out of engagement with the drive-gear l'i', and into engagement with the gear 19 on the extended end of one of the gripping-rollers. When out of engagement with the gripping-roller gear 19 the drive-gear imparts motion to the take-up or record-roller t-hrou h the medium of a large idle-gear 20', w hich meshes with a gear 21 fast on the adjacent end of the ox- I tended journal of said take-up roller. In
order to accomplish this result I extend the end of the shaft or stud22 on which gear 18 is journaled beyondthe outer face of the latter, and feather said gear on said cxtended end (in any well-known manner) so that the gear will have a longitudinal movement thereon but will revolve therewith. I pro vide this gear 18 with an outwardly extended boss, 23, and keep the same normally at the limit of its movement toward the adjacent side of the register by means of a coil expansion-spring 24 which is interposed between the outer headed end of shaft 22 andsaid boss. When the boss 23 is at the limit of. its movement toward said register the drive-gear 17 is engaged by the idle gear 18 and actuates the gripping rollers as well as the take up or record roller 21, and the gear 18 will be kept in engagement with the drive-gear 17 by the expansionspring 24. When, however, the gear 18 is moved to the outer limit of its movement on shaft 22 to disengage the same from the drive-gear, said gear 18 is retained at the outer limit of its movement by a spring depressed bolt 26 seated in the outer end of the boss 23, which enters a circumferential groove 27 made in shaft 22' with reference to the same. In order to operate gear 17 a handle 25 is secured to the outer end of the shaft 28 at such a distance from the side of the register as not to interfere with the shaft 22.
What I claim as new is 1. In an autographic register the combination with the grippingrollers and the takeup roller, pinions on the ends of the journals of said gripping rollers that mesh with each other, of a drive-gear located between said gripping rollers and the take-up roller, and separate gearing connecting said drivegear with the take-up roller gear including a single idle pinion. connecting said drivegear and gripping-roller gear and adapted with its axis to be moved transversely to the longitudinal direction of theaxis in and out of mesh with said gearing and independent of the other gears comprising said gearing.
2. In an autographic register the combi nation with the gripping-rollers and the take-up roller having journals on their outer ends gears on the ends of said journals, of a drive-gear located between said gripping rollers and the take-up roller, gearing connecting said driveear with the take-up roller gear, anda sh eld secured in front of said gear having a slot therein between the drive-gear and the gripping roller gear, a transverse spindle extending through and adjustable in said slot having its outer end screw-threaded, a nut on the outer end of said spindle, and an idle-gear journaled on the inner end thereof adapted to be moved independently into and out of mesh with one of said gears.
3. In an autographic register the combination with the gripping-rollers and a removable take-up roller having journals on their outer ends gears on the ends ofsaid journals, of a drive-gear located between said gripping-rollers and the take-up roller,
