Be it known that- I, EDWIN G. STAUDE, of. Minneapolis, Hennepln county, Minnesota, have. invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Feed Devices for Flexible Blanks 0r Sheets, of which t-he'following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a rapid and positive feed' mechanism for flexible blanks or sheets. r
The invention consists generally .inimproved means for feeding blanks or sheets, one'at'a time, rapidly and consecutively.
In the' accompanying drawings which form part of thls specification and which represents the frame of the machine whichillustrate the preferred form of my invertti'on, Figure 1 ,is 'a vertical sectional view" of the feed'device, Fig.2 is a sectional view on line ww of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the position of: the pin points or needles which, may be used in the periphery of the feed wheel, Fig. 4 is.an;enlarged side elevation illustrating the operative position; of the feed late or b1o'ck;with respect'to th'e upper eed wheel.- Figsb and 6 are detail sectional views illustrating the means for preventing the pinsupports from rotating and-permitting the "adjustment of the pins.
1 In all of the figures ofQthedraWihgs 2 may be of any suitable form and construction and 3 represents a suitable feed plate or table supported preferably on an arm 4 that is pivoted at'5 on the frame of the machine, and is preferably provided with a dog 6 that engages ratchet teeth' 7 .and permits the vertgal adjustment of the arm 4 and feed plate or table 3 to give to said table the pitch desired. Side boards 8 are secured on the feed table 5 by means of thumb screws 9 and said side boards may be adjusted laterally to adapt the table'for feeding blanks of different widths. At the lower end of the table I prefer to provide a casting 1O havingpreferably a hole 11 therein through which a bolt 12 passes and adjustably'secures the casting upon a' suitable bracket 13. By loosening the bolt 12 the casting may be moved horizontally back and forth upon its supports. A plate 151 is-pivoted in the casting 1O andhas a depending arm 15 through which an adjusting screw 16 passes into the saidcasting,

A recess 18 is preferably provided in the top of the plate 14 and a block 19 of rubber or other suitable material is fitted thereinand forms a retarding surface which is engaged by the endsof the blanks lying upon the table 3.
A feed wheel 20 is mounted on a shaft 21 and is preferably provided in its periphery with sockets 22 wherein plugs or blocks 23 are slid-ably mounted on screws 24 that are adjustable in threaded holes 25 in, the bot .tom of said sockets for the purpose of regulating the travel of'the" plugs or blocks. ;Where this construction is used I prefer to fprovide a spring 26 interposed betweenthe plugs 23 and the bottoms of the sockets. Said springs are placed under compression when the screws 24 are turned inwardly, gand-iis'a id springs tend to force the plugs foutyvardly as far as they arepermitted to fmove by contact with. the heads ;of the :screws 24. The blocks may, therefore, be rapidly-adjusted by turning the screws inward or outward. In these plugs pins27 to provide two pins in each plug as indicated in Fig. 2 and to arrange the sockets in pairs upon opposite-sides of the center .of the'feed wheelr-so that a blank will be advanced in the machine with each half positive as the pins engage the'upper blank ata slightly differentangle and one set willengage the blank first and the second set will remain in contact therewith for 'a out of contact. By this means the feed of the blanks the desired distance will be insured. The pins are preferably made adjustable in the plugs by means of set screws 27, the heads of which are within the sockets of the wheel, recesses being formed in the plugs for the purpose and whenever desired these screws may be loosened and the pins adjusted to project their points beyond the periphery of the feed wheel or withdraw them as desired. The sockets 22 are preferably provided with longitudinal slots 33 wherein pins 34 mounted in the plugs are slidable to permit-the plugs to revolution of the wheel. By arranging the. sockets in pairs and providing two plugs with pins therein, I am able to make the feed brief period after the first set has passed.

I prefer move lengthwise in the sockets, preventing rotary movement thereof. The pins will thus be held at all times in their proper position with respect to the periphery of the feed wheel. I may provide in connection with this device an overhanging guide 28 mounted at 29 on the frame of the machine and having a depending horizontally extending end that engages the forward ends of the blanks and prevents them from being carried around on the periphery of the feed wheel. In other words, it acts as a stripper to prevent the blank from adhering to the periphery of the feed wheel or the feed pins.
Beneath the feed wheel 20 and in position to co-act therewith is a wheel 30 mounted on a shaft 31 and preferably carrying a feed belt 32, between which and the periphery of the wheel 20 the blanks are fed.
When the blanks are placed upon the feed table as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings their lower ends are preferably feathered out as shown in Fig. 1, and the edges of a number of the blanks toward the top of the pile come in contact with the rubber blo k or plate 19. This block acts as a retarding surface and holds back all of the blanks except the top one with which the feed wheel engages and which is moved forward by it. As the feed wheel rotates it comes in contact with the upper surface of the top blank andas said blank is caused to adhere to the wheel it is moved forward with the wheel until its forward edge is grasped between the edge of the top feed wheel and the edge of the lower feed wheel or the surface of the belt thereon, that is, two moving sur faces grip the blank between them and carry it forward with a positive motion and deposit it upon the belt or carrier The retar-ding block or plate 19 may be adjusted toward or from the upper feed wheel and the table may be adjusted to any desired inclination. It is preferred to have the table set at such an angle that the blanks will feed by gravity down against the periphery of the top feed wheel, and with their lower ends or edges resting upon the upper surface of the retarding block. 3
The upper and lower feed wheels are preferably located, as shown, in position to cooperate with each other contiguous to the forward edge of the plate carrying the retarding block or surface, the initial feeding operation being performed by the cooperation of the upper feed wheel, the feed table and the retarding plate, and the subsequent feeding operation being performed by the coiiperation of the upper feed wheel and the lower feed wheel or the belt passing over the periphery of said lower feed wheel, the feed plate or retarding block or surface thereon-being preferably arranged between the lower feed wheel and the inclined table and preferably atone side of the plane passing through the axes of the upper and lower feed wheels. In this way a positive and reliable feed is obtained.
The apparatus is adapted for feeding blanks for various purposes, including blanks for flexible boxes ofall kinds, envelop blanks, envelops and blank sheets of paper for printing or parafiining machines or wherever it is desired to deliver flexible blanks in sheets to a folding, printing or other machine.
The'purpose of the pins upon the periphery of the feed wheel is to cause the blanks to adhere to the wheel as they are being moved forward into the position where they are grasped between the upper feed wheel and the lower feed wheel or belt. Any equivalent device for causing the blanks to adhere to the upper feed wheel may be employed without departing from my invention, and the details of the construction may obviously be varied in many particulars without departing from my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with a feed table arranged to support a series of blanks or sheets, and a retarding surface located beyond the discharge end of said feed table and with which the ends of the blanks or sheets engage, of a lower feed wheel with a feeding surface upon its periphery arranged to engage the under surfaces of the blanks as they pass from said retarding surface, and an upper feed wheel having a concentric axis arranged above and cooperating simultaneously with said retarding surface and said lower fee-d wheel, and engaging the top surface of the upper blank on said feed table, said upper feed wheel and said movable feeding surface pressing upon opposite sides of the blank or sheet as it passes between them.
2. The combination, with a feed table arranged to support a series of blanks or sheets, and a retarding surface located beyond the discharge end of said feed table, and with which the ends of the blanks or sheets engage, of a movable feeding surface arranged to engage the under surfaces of the blanks after they pass beyond said retarding surface, and an upper feed wheel having a concentridaxis arranged above and cooperating simultaneously with said retarding surface and said lower feed wheel, and'provided upon its periphery with means for causing the blank with which it engages to move with said wheel until said blank is grasped between the periphery of said wheel and said movable feeding surface.

The combination, with an inclined feed table, of an upper positively rotated feed wheel having a concentric axis arranged to engage and feed blanks forwardly from said table, a lower feed wheel disposed beneath said upper feed wheel and contiguous thereto and between which wheels blanks are fed, the upper feed wheel engaging the upper surface of the blank, the lower feed wheel cooperating with the upper wheel opposite the point of engagement of said upper wheel with a blank, a plate having a metarding surface interposed between said lower feed wheel and said table, the initial operation being performed by the cooperation of, said upper positively rotated feed wheel and said plate, and the subsequent feeding operation being performed by the cooperation ,of said upper feed wheel and said lower feed wheel. The combination, with a feed table arranged to support a series of blanks or sheets, of a tgnsversely adjustable retarding surface located beyond the discharge end of said feed table and with which the ends a of the blanks or sheets engage, a lower feed wheel with a feeding surface upon its pe yond the discharge end of said feed table and with which the ends of the blanks or sheets engage, of an upper positively rotated feed wheel having a concentric axis arranged above said retarding surface and provided upon its periphery with means for causing the blank with which it engages to move with said wheel over said retarding surface, and a lower feeding surface located beyond the retarding surface and arranged in position to press said blanks between itself and the rim of said feed wheel after the blanks have been engaged and moved by said upper feed wheel. 7

The combination, with a feed tablegarranged to support a series of blanks or sheets and a retarding surface located beyond the discharge end of said feed table and with which the ends of the blanks or sheets engage, of an upper positively rotated feed wheel having a, concentric axis arranged above said retarding surface and provided upon 1ts periphery w1th means for causing the blank with which it engages to move w1th said wheel over said retarding surface, and a lower feeding surface arranged 1n juxtaposition to said retarding surface and between which and said upper feeding wheel the blanks are pressed after they pass "said retarding surface.
