To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Crosse, in the county of Macon and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Farm and WVagon Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to farm and wagon gates of that classwhich are adapted to be automatically operated by tripping devices actuated by the wheels of passing wagons, and it has particular reference to that class of gates which are bodily lifted from one side of the main gate post to the other side, thus leaving the passageway imobstructed.
The invention has for its object to produce a gate of the class referred to which shall be equipped with a counterweight of simple and convenient construction, enabling the gate to be operated with slightv expenditure of power.
Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the general construction and operation of a gate of the character described.
l/Vith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the in vention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In-the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the gate in closed or obstructing position. Fig. 2 is a detail view in elevation, showing the gate in open position. Fig.3 is a detail view in elevation showing the gate in an intermediate position.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
1 designates the main gate post, and 2, 3 are end posts suitably spaced from the main gate post to support the main operating and the block 9.
shaft 4, the latter being a rock shaft which is supported for oscillation in alined bearings 5 at the upper ends of the posts 1, 2 and 3.
6 is the latch post which is erected at a suitable distance from the main gate post 1 at one side of the latter. A weight carrying post 7 is suitably spaced from the main gate post 1 at the side opposite to the latch post 6. Blocks or uprights 8 and 9 are suitably located adjacent to the main gate post 1 and the weight carrying post 7, respectively, to permit the gate to pass between the post 1 and the block 8, and the post 7 The posts 1, 7 and the blocks 8, 9 are provided with bearings 10 supporting journals 11, 12 formed at the ends of yokes 13, 1 1, the bridge portions of which are engaged with bearing members 15, 16 associated with the gate G, which lattermay be of any suitable construction. The bearing members 15, 16 are located at the top of the gate, the member 15 being disposed at the heel end, and the bearing member 16 being positioned about midway between the two ends of the gate. The bearing member 16 consists of a box having an arcuate slot 17 in which the bridge portion of the yoke 14 has a limited play or movement.
One of the journals 11 of the yoke 13 has a crank 18 which is connected oy a link 19 with one end of a curved lever 20 which is fulcrumed on the post 7, said lever carrying at its opposite end a counter weight 21 of sufiicient dimensions to approximately balance the gate. One of the journals 12 of the yoke 14: has a crank 22 which is connected by a link or rod 23 with a crank 24 that extends radially from the rock shaft 4. Said rock shaft is provided adjacent to its ends with cranks 25, 26 that are connected by means of rods 27, 28 with cranks 29, 30 extending from the trip devices T which are supported for rocking movement adjacent to the posts 2 and 3, said trip devices being each provided with U-shaped cranks 31, 32 and 33, 34 which are so positioned that when the gate is closed the cranks 31, 33 will as sume an upstanding position, while the cranks 32 3 1 lie flat on the ground, the relative positions of the cranks being reversed when the gate is open. The U-shaped cranks of the respective trip devices are of suitable size and shape to be engaged by the wheels of passing vehicles for the purpose of actuating the gate operating mechanism, as will be readily understood.
A latch device L is provided, the same being suitably secured upon the gate at the end adjacent to the latch post, said latch device including a base plate 35 having a bearing 36 in which a latch bolt 37 is slidably mount ed to engage a recess in the latch post. A lever 38 pivoted upon the base plate extends through a keeper 39 on the latch bolt, and said lever is provided with a laterally extending arm 40 carrying a weight 41 whereby it is actuated to project thelatch bolt. The keeper 89 is connected by a flexible ele ment, such as a chain 12, with an eye 4. 3 formed on one of the limbs of the yoke 14:.
In the operation of the improved gate, when a vehicle approaches from either direction,- a wheel of such vehicle is guided to engage one of the upstanding U-shaped cranks ofone of the trip devices, such trip device being thereby rocked and made to communicate motion through the rod 27 or 28, as the case may be, to the rock shaft t, the crank 24 of which will now actuate the yoke 14 through the medium of the rod 23 and the crank 22 of said yoke. The bridge portion of the yoke moves upwardly in the slot 17 of the bearing member 16, thus pulling the chain 4:2 and actuating the latch to retract the bolt 37. As the yoke 1 1 continues to move alias the gate, the lifting being faciliat'ed by the balance weight 21 connected with the lever 20 which is connected bythelink 19 with. the crank 18 associated with the yoke 13. hen the yokes 13, 14 assume an upright position, as indicated in Fig. 3, the weight 21 will be at the downward limit of its movement, said weight being elevated by the descent of the gate, which latter passes between the posts 1 and 7 at one side and the blocks or uprights S and 9 at the other side until it assumes the open position indicated in Fig. 2. After the vehicle passes through the passageway, one of the wheels is again directed against the upstanding U-shaped crank of the trip member lying in the path thereof, said trip member being now rocked with the effect of rocking and restoring the rock shaft 4 and the parts actuated thereby to the initial position, causing the gate to assume an obstructing position, the latch bolt being restored to looking position by the action of the weight 21. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A pair of yokes havingjournals, ajournal'ofeach yoke being provided with a crank, bearings for the journals of the yokes including a main gate post, a weight carry ing post and two uprights spaced from said posts, a gate having bearing members'at the top thereof, one of said bearing members being disposed at the heel end of the gate and the other bearing member intermediate the heel and the front end of the gate, said bearing members being in engagement with the yokes, a suit-ably supported rock shaft having a crank intermediate the ends thereof, a rod connecting said crank with the crank associated with the yoke which engages the bearing intermediate the ends of the gate, a weight carrying lever fulcrumed upon the weight carrying post, a link connecting said lever with the crank associated with the yoke engaging the bearing of the heel end of the post, and trip means for actuating the rock shaft.
2. A pair of yokes having journals, a journal of each yoke being-provided with a crank, suit-ably supported bearings for said journals, a gate provided at the top thereof with bearing members, one of said bearing members being located at the heel end of the gate and the other about midway between the heel and front ends, the last mentioned bearing member having an arcuate slot, and said bearing members being en gaged by the yokes, a suitably supported curved lever carrying a weight at one end a curved rod connecting the other end of the lever with the crank associated with the yoke engaging the hearing at the heel end of the gate, a latch device on the gate including a weight projected bolt having a keeper, a chain connecting said keeper with the yoke engaging the arcuate slot of the bearing member intermediate the ends of the gate, and means for actuating the lastmentioned yoke to operate the latch and to shift the position of the gate.
